Suspect charged with attempted murder of Slovak PM Fico

A man has been charged with the attempted murder of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico after the politician was seriously injured in a shooting attack.

The suspect, who has not been officially named, has been widely identified by Slovak reports as a 71-year-old man from the town of Levice. Reports indicate he could face up to life in prison.

Mr. Fico, 59, is in serious but stable condition after being shot several times in what colleagues have described as a politically motivated attack.

At a press conference on Thursday, Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok stated that the suspect acted alone and had previously participated in anti-government protests. “This is a lone wolf whose actions were accelerated after the presidential election since he was dissatisfied with its outcome,” Estok said.

Peter Pellegrini, a populist and ally of Robert Fico, won the April election.

Shot Five Times at Close Range

In broad daylight on Wednesday, Fico, surrounded by a crowd of supporters, was shot at close range. The gunman fired five times, hitting the prime minister in the stomach and arm.

The attack caught Fico’s security detail completely by surprise. Footage showed several officers bundling the wounded PM into a car and driving away at high speed, while others detained the suspect.

Fico was rushed to a nearby hospital in an air ambulance with life-threatening injuries. He was later transferred to another facility in Banska Bystrica, east of Handlova, where surgeons and trauma teams worked through the night to stabilize him.

On Thursday, the hospital director told a news conference that Fico’s condition was stable but “truly very serious,” and he had been moved to an intensive care unit.

Pellegrini later said he had visited Fico, who had been able to speak a few sentences. “The situation is very critical and we have to give him a lot of energy and be positive,” Pellegrini said.

Politically Motivated Attack

Local reports describe the suspect as a writer and political activist. A video being widely circulated on Slovak media purports to feature him, wherein the man expresses disagreement with government policy and its stance towards state media. The BBC has not verified if the person in the video is the perpetrator detained at the scene or the circumstances under which it was filmed.

Several Slovak politicians called the shooting an “attack on democracy.” On Thursday, outgoing President Zuzana Caputova appealed for calm and invited all party leaders to a meeting to discuss political tension.

Meanwhile, President-elect Peter Pellegrini called on all parties to suspend campaigning before the European Parliament elections scheduled for early June.

Fico is a divisive figure at home for his calls to end military aid to Ukraine and sanctions on Russia. The shooting occurred on the day parliament began discussing the government’s proposal to abolish Slovakia’s public broadcaster, RTVS.

Thousands of Slovaks have protested against the proposed reform of the public broadcaster in recent weeks. However, a planned opposition-led demonstration was called off on Wednesday as news of the shooting emerged.

In an interview with the BBC, Deputy Prime Minister Taraba blamed “false narratives” by opposition parties in Slovakia for the shooting. “Our prime minister several times mentioned in the past that he was afraid that this would happen,” Taraba said in another interview with the BBC’s World Tonight programme.

Interior Minister Estok also accused the media of contributing to the climate that led to the 59-year-old’s shooting, telling a news conference: “Many of you were those who were sowing this hatred.” Pavol Strba, a foreign affairs correspondent for the Slovakian newspaper Dennik N, told the BBC News Channel that “the current governing coalition has painted targets on the heads of journalists, members of NGOs, etc.” He also mentioned, “I have some information that some of the newsrooms in Slovakia are being patrolled by police right now.”

Israeli defense chief opposes military rule in Gaza, calls for clear post-war strategy

TEL AVIV, Israel. Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to publicly renounce any plans for Israeli governance over Gaza, emphasizing his opposition to Israeli military rule in the Palestinian enclave.

“The ‘day after Hamas,’ will only be achieved with Palestinian entities taking control of Gaza, accompanied by international actors, establishing a governing alternative to Hamas’ rule,” Gallant stated during a news conference at the Kirya, Israel’s military headquarters, on Wednesday.

Gallant called on Netanyahu to decisively declare that Israel will not impose civilian or military control over Gaza and to outline a governing alternative to Hamas. “I call on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to make a decision and declare that Israel will not establish civilian control over the Gaza Strip, that Israel will not establish military governance in the Gaza Strip, and that a governing alternative to Hamas in the Gaza Strip will be raised immediately,” he added.

These comments come amid growing concerns over Israel’s long-term strategy in Gaza. The Israeli military recently re-entered northern Gaza, a region it had previously withdrawn from, to combat Hamas militants exploiting a power vacuum. Military officials have expressed concerns that without a clear post-war strategy, similar patterns will repeat across Gaza.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken echoed these concerns, urging Israel to focus on future governance to avoid chaos. “Israel must focus on what the future can and must be,” Blinken said on Wednesday, warning against “anarchy and a vacuum that’s likely to be filled by chaos.”

Gallant has previously opposed Israeli control over post-war Gaza, but his Wednesday remarks were his most direct. “I will not agree to the establishment of Israeli military rule in Gaza. Israel must not establish civilian rule in Gaza,” he asserted, warning that military occupation would result in significant “bloodshed and victims, as well as a heavy economic price.”

In a video statement later that day, Netanyahu responded indirectly, rejecting both Hamas and the Palestinian Authority as future rulers of Gaza. “I’m not willing to replace Hamastan with Fatahstan,” he said, emphasizing that Hamas must be entirely eliminated before any new government can be considered. “As long as Hamas remains in place, no other entity would enter Gaza to administer the civilian aspects, especially not the Palestinian Authority,” Netanyahu stated.

Gallant’s remarks have sparked political controversy in Israel, with right-wing lawmakers condemning his stance and some urging Netanyahu to remove him from his position. However, Minister Benny Gantz, a member of the war cabinet, supported Gallant, stating he was “speaking the truth.”

This public disagreement between Gallant and Netanyahu coincides with U.S. calls for Israel to present a clear post-war plan for Gaza. Blinken reiterated U.S. opposition to both Israeli occupation and Hamas governance, stressing the need for a structured plan. “We do not support and will not support an Israeli occupation. We also of course, do not support Hamas governance in Gaza,” Blinken said in Kyiv, Ukraine. “There needs to be a clear and concrete plan, and we look to Israel to come forward with its ideas,” he concluded.

Chicago prodigy entered college at 10, she earned doctorate at 17 from Arizona State University

CHICAGO. Dorothy Jean Tillman II, a remarkable teen from Chicago, has reached an extraordinary milestone by earning her doctorate in integrated behavioral health from Arizona State University at just 17 years old. This achievement marks the latest step in a higher education journey that began when she took her first college course at age 10.

Tillman’s academic path includes earning an associate’s degree, a bachelor’s degree, and a master’s degree before her recent doctoral accomplishment. Her dissertation defense in December secured her place as the youngest person to earn a doctoral degree in her field at Arizona State, confirmed by Associate Professor Leslie Manson.

“It’s a wonderful celebration, and we hope … that Dorothy Jean inspires more students,” Manson told ABC’s “Good Morning America.” “But this is still something so rare and unique.”

Affectionately nicknamed “Dorothy Jeanius” by her family and friends, Tillman is the granddaughter of former Chicago Alderwoman Dorothy Tillman. She began her college education through the College of Lake County in northern Illinois, majoring in psychology and completing her associate’s degree in 2016.

Tillman earned her bachelor’s degree in humanities from New York’s Excelsior College in 2018. Two years later, she obtained a master’s of science from Unity College in Maine before being accepted into Arizona State’s Behavioral Health Management Program in 2021. Most of her coursework was completed remotely, but she attended her commencement ceremony in person and addressed the graduating class.

Reflecting on her journey, Tillman credits her educational success to the support and guidance of her grandmother and mother. “Everything that we were doing didn’t seem abnormal to me or out of the ordinary until it started getting all of the attention,” she shared with The Associated Press.

Despite her academic focus, Tillman acknowledges the sacrifices she made along the way. “I didn’t have the everyday school things like homecoming dances or spirit weeks or just school pictures and things like that … that kind of create unity with my peers,” she said.

Outside of academics, Tillman finds joy in dance and choreography. She is also the founder and CEO of the Dorothyjeanius STEAM Leadership Institute, which offers summer camps to help young people engage with the arts and STEM subjects. Looking ahead, Tillman plans to pursue public speaking engagements and fundraising efforts for her institute, with hopes to eventually franchise the program.

Professor Manson praises Tillman’s motivation and leadership qualities. “And truly, I think what is inspiring is that she embodies that meaning of being a true leader,” Manson remarked.

Jimalita Tillman, Dorothy’s mother, is most impressed with her daughter’s ability to balance her achievements with grace and determination. “She knows when to put her foot down when choosing between social outings and her education,” she said.

Dorothy Jean Tillman II’s incredible academic journey and her future aspirations continue to inspire and pave the way for young students everywhere.

Philippines bolsters civilian mission in South China Sea

MANILA. The Philippines has taken bold steps to highlight its territorial disputes with China by releasing videos of confrontations in the South China Sea and inviting journalists to document the ongoing tensions. This move aims to garner international support amid escalating hostilities with Beijing.

In a strategic deployment, the Philippines sent three coast guard vessels to ensure the safety of a civilian flotilla bound for the contested Scarborough Shoal, a flashpoint in the maritime disputes between Manila and Beijing. The three-day mission, organized by the group Atin Ito (This is Ours), is intended to deliver provisions to fishermen anchored at the shoal.

Despite the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) not being an official part of the civilian mission that sailed on Wednesday, it will provide safety and security, PCG spokesperson Jay Tarriela told reporters. A PCG aircraft monitoring the situation reported spotting 19 Chinese vessels, including a Chinese navy ship, near the Scarborough Shoal.

Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported that the Chinese Coast Guard recently conducted routine drills at the shoal. Previously, Atin Ito led a mission to deliver supplies to troops at the Second Thomas Shoal but had to abort due to harassment by Chinese coast guard ships.

China maintains its firm stance on sovereignty over the shoal, which it refers to as Huangyan Island. “If the Philippine side abuses China’s goodwill and infringes on China’s territorial sovereignty and jurisdiction, China will defend its rights in accordance with the law,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin stated. CCTV echoed this, noting the Chinese Coast Guard’s routine enforcement activities in the disputed waters.

Historical Context and Strategic Significance

The Scarborough Shoal, within Manila’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ), is rich in fish stocks and provides a safe haven for vessels during storms. China took control of the shoal in 2012 after a standoff with the Philippines and has since maintained a constant presence of coast guard and fishing vessels, often accused by Manila of being part of a maritime militia.

“China’s actions in the West Philippine Sea reveal not strength, but a glaring weakness,” remarked Rafaela David, co-convenor of Atin Ito. “When it resorts to intimidating small, civilian fishing vessels with military might, it showcases a narrative built on fear rather than legitimate authority.”

Atin Ito has installed symbolic buoys within the Philippine EEZ, emblazoned with “WPS ATIN ITO” to assert Philippine sovereignty. The term West Philippine Sea (WPS) refers to parts of the South China Sea within the Philippines’ EEZ.

A 2016 ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration invalidated China’s sweeping claims in the South China Sea, a decision Beijing has continuously ignored. China claims nearly the entire South China Sea, overlapping with territories claimed by the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Vietnam.

Escalating Tensions and International Implications

The increasing frequency of skirmishes has led to minor collisions, injured Filipino navy personnel, and damaged supply boats. This has raised fears of the territorial disputes escalating into armed conflict, potentially involving the United States, a longtime treaty ally of the Philippines.

The Philippines’ strategy of releasing confrontation videos and involving journalists seeks to draw global attention to its plight. In December, a similar mission by Atin Ito was cut short due to Chinese harassment. Recently, Chinese coast guard ships used water cannons on Philippine vessels, further inflaming tensions.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry warned, “If the Philippine side abuses China’s goodwill and infringes on China’s territorial sovereignty and jurisdiction, China will safeguard its rights and take countermeasures in accordance with the law.”

With multiple nations, including Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan, involved in the South China Sea disputes, the region remains a hotbed of geopolitical tension. The Philippines’ latest moves underscore its determination to defend its maritime rights and seek international support against China’s assertive actions.

Pilipinas bibili ng limang barko sa Japan

MAYNILA.

“We are very grateful for their cooperation to make sure the WPS [West Philippine Sea] remains peaceful, stable, and prosperous for our respective people,” giit ng opisyal.

Sinabi ni PCG spokesperson, Rear Admiral Armando Balilo, na lalagda ang Pilipinas at ang Japan sa kontrata para sa pagbili ng limang 97-meter multi-role response vessels (MRRVs) sa Biyernes.

“The contract signing will ensure thereafter. We expect the arrival of the five 97-meter MRRVs to expand the PCG fleet around 2027 to 2028,” pahayag ni Balilo.

Putin’s state visit to China highlights strengthening ties during Ukraine conflict

BEIJING. Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Beijing on Thursday for a two-day state visit, underscoring the deepening alliance between Russia and China. This visit comes as Moscow continues its aggressive campaign in Ukraine, increasing its economic reliance on China.

In an interview with Chinese media ahead of his visit, Putin expressed openness to dialogue regarding the conflict in Ukraine. “We are open to a dialogue on Ukraine, but such negotiations must take into account the interests of all countries involved in the conflict, including ours,” he told Xinhua News Agency.

The timing of Putin’s visit coincides with a significant Russian offensive in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region, which began last week and has forced nearly 8,000 people to flee. This escalation is part of a broader push in the Donetsk region, as Ukraine’s military awaits new supplies from the United States.

“We have never refused to negotiate,” Putin reiterated. “We are seeking a comprehensive, sustainable, and just settlement of this conflict through peaceful means.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has maintained that any negotiations must include the restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity, the withdrawal of Russian troops, the release of all prisoners, a tribunal for those responsible for the aggression, and security guarantees for Ukraine.

China, while claiming neutrality, has supported Russia’s narrative that the invasion was provoked by the West. Despite this, China proposed a peace plan in 2023, which the West and Ukraine rejected. Putin has praised the plan, suggesting it could lay the groundwork for future diplomatic processes.

During the visit, Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to discuss their comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation. The Kremlin’s statement indicated that they would explore new directions for cooperation and exchange views on pressing international and regional issues.

This visit is part of a broader effort by China and Russia to challenge the U.S.-led Western democratic order. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov emphasized the importance of the Russia-China alliance in establishing a multipolar global order.

“Moscow and Beijing play a major balancing role in global affairs,” Lavrov stated. “The Russian president’s forthcoming visit to China will strengthen our joint work.”

As the war in Ukraine extends into its third year, Russia has turned increasingly to China, diverting energy exports and relying on Chinese technology to circumvent Western sanctions. The military ties between the two nations have also strengthened, with joint drills and cooperation in defense technologies.

Putin previously acknowledged sharing advanced military technologies with China, significantly enhancing its defense capabilities. Notably, Russia has assisted China in developing an early warning system for ballistic missile launches, a technology previously exclusive to Russia and the U.S.

The visit marks a pivotal moment in the Russia-China relationship, reinforcing their united front against Western influence and highlighting their strategic and economic interdependence amidst ongoing global tensions.

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico survives assassination attempt

BANSKA BYSTRICA, Slovakia. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico is recovering after being shot in an assassination attempt on Wednesday. Initially in critical condition, Fico is now stable and no longer in a life-threatening situation, according to government officials.

The 59-year-old prime minister was shot five times as he exited a government meeting in Handlova. “I was very shocked … fortunately as far as I know the operation went well – and I guess in the end he will survive … he’s not in a life-threatening situation at this moment,” said Deputy Prime Minister and Environment Minister Tomas Taraba to the BBC’s Newshour.

One bullet passed through Fico’s stomach and another hit a joint. After undergoing surgery in Banska Bystrica, he was reported to be stable. Defence Minister Robert Kalinak detailed that Fico suffered “serious polytrauma” from multiple gunshot wounds.

Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok confirmed the political motivation behind the attack, which occurred soon after an April presidential election won by Fico’s ally, Peter Pellegrini. The shooter, identified as a 71-year-old man, stunned the nation with his actions, prompting widespread condemnation.

The shooting has shocked Slovakia, a NATO and EU member with little history of political violence. Leaders worldwide, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Joe Biden, have expressed their outrage and condemnation.

“This assassination (attempt) was politically motivated and the perpetrator’s decision was born closely after the presidential election,” Sutaj Estok said.

Fico, who returned to power last October, has shifted policies rapidly, attracting both domestic and international criticism. His government has scaled back support for Ukraine, sought to weaken corruption punishments, and is overhauling the RTVS public broadcaster amid calls to protect media freedom.

Following the attack, Fico was rushed to a local hospital before being airlifted to Banska Bystrica due to the severity of his condition. A Reuters witness reported hearing shots as Fico exited a building to greet a crowd. Police quickly apprehended the shooter.

The suspect, reportedly a former security guard and author, held a legal gun license. His son expressed disbelief over his father’s actions.

The Slovak opposition, including the Progressive Slovakia party, has called for restraint to prevent further escalation of tensions. Parliament suspended its sessions indefinitely after the incident.

Fico, a long-standing figure in Slovak politics, has been a polarizing leader, often shifting between pro-European and nationalistic stances. He was previously forced to resign in 2018 amid mass protests following the murder of journalist Jan Kuciak, which highlighted deep societal divisions.

President Zuzana Caputova and international leaders have urged for calm and unity in the wake of the attack, emphasizing the need for stability and peace in Slovakia during this tumultuous time.

Gaza conflict escalates, Israel questions presence of armed men at UN site

CAIRO/JERUSALEM. Israeli forces engaged in intense clashes with militants across Gaza on Wednesday, notably in the southern city of Rafah, previously considered a safe haven for civilians, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict that has claimed the lives of tens of thousands of Palestinians.

Tensions between Israel and the United Nations escalated as the Israeli military sought clarification regarding footage showing armed individuals near vehicles belonging to the UN Palestinian relief agency. Additionally, India was coordinating efforts to repatriate the body of a UN staff member killed in Rafah due to tank fire, as confirmed by the global body.

Despite warnings from Israel’s key ally, the United States, to exercise restraint to avoid civilian casualties, Israeli forces have continued operations in the eastern part of Rafah, targeting what they claim to be four Hamas battalions.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken reiterated the U.S. stance, emphasizing the need for a clear plan for Gaza’s future, rejecting both Israeli occupation and Hamas governance. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded by stressing the necessity of dismantling Hamas before discussing post-war arrangements.

Meanwhile, Defence Minister Yoav Gallant publicly challenged Netanyahu’s approach, advocating for an alternative administration for Gaza. Netanyahu countered, asserting that eliminating Hamas is a prerequisite for any such transition.

Escalating Toll

The recent offensive has resulted in a significant death toll, with over 35,000 Palestinians killed, according to Gaza health officials. Tuesday saw the highest single-day casualty count in weeks, with at least 82 fatalities reported.

In retaliation for Hamas’ October 7 attack, which resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 people and the abduction of 253, Israel has intensified its offensive in Gaza.

Challenges Amidst Clashes

In response to the escalating conflict, ceasefire negotiations mediated by Qatar and Egypt have reached an impasse. Hamas is demanding a permanent cessation of hostilities, while Netanyahu’s government insists on continuing military operations until Hamas is eradicated.

As the violence persists, the UN is conducting an investigation into the death of an international staff member, killed in Rafah. Additionally, aid workers continue to face grave risks, with 254 killed since the onset of the conflict, including 191 UN personnel.

The situation remains tense, with no immediate resolution in sight as both sides dig in their heels amidst mounting casualties and international scrutiny.
