TEL AVIV, Israel. The Israeli military revealed on Wednesday its intention to redirect a substantial portion of the 1.4 million displaced Palestinians residing in Rafah, the southernmost town of the Gaza Strip, towards designated “humanitarian islands” within the territory in preparation for an upcoming offensive in the area.

The fate of the inhabitants of Rafah has become a focal point of concern for Israel’s allies, including the United States, as well as humanitarian organizations, fearing the potential humanitarian crisis that could arise from an offensive in an area densely populated with displaced individuals. Rafah serves as Gaza’s primary entry point for crucial humanitarian aid.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has emphasized the necessity of an offensive in Rafah to achieve Israel’s objective of dismantling Hamas, particularly following the militants’ October 7 attack, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people, predominantly civilians, with around 250 individuals taken hostage and brought into Gaza. According to Gaza health officials, Israel’s incursion into Gaza has resulted in over 31,000 casualties, leaving much of the territory in ruins and displacing approximately 80% of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents.

Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, Israel’s chief military spokesman, outlined the military’s strategy of relocating Rafah’s inhabitants to specified areas, a process he stated would be conducted in collaboration with international partners. This initiative is deemed crucial in the military’s preparations for the anticipated invasion of Rafah, where Hamas is reported to maintain four battalions targeted for destruction by Israel.

Rafah’s population has surged in recent months as Palestinians in Gaza fled conflict across various parts of the territory, resulting in the proliferation of tents throughout the town.

“We need to make sure that 1.4 million people or at least a significant amount of the 1.4 million will move. Where? To humanitarian islands that we will create with the international community,” Hagari briefed reporters.

The proposed islands aim to provide temporary shelter, sustenance, and other essentials to evacuated Palestinians. However, Hagari did not specify the timeline for Rafah’s evacuation or the commencement of the offensive, stressing the importance of operational readiness and coordination with neighboring Egypt, which has expressed reluctance to accommodate an influx of displaced Palestinians across its border.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized Washington’s concerns regarding Rafah, urging Israel to present a plan ensuring the safety of civilians in the event of a military operation.

“We need to see a plan that will get civilians out of harm’s way if there’s a military operation in Rafah,” Blinken stated after a virtual ministerial meeting on Gaza aid.

As tensions persist, casualties continue to mount, with an Israeli strike targeting a food distribution site in southern Gaza operated by UNRWA, resulting in the death of one UNRWA staff member and injuring 22 others. Gaza’s health authorities reported a total of five fatalities in the strike on the UNRWA warehouse.

The Israeli military indicated that it would investigate the incident further amidst ongoing hostilities across Gaza.

As April edges closer, North America braces itself for a celestial spectacle as the sun prepares to momentarily vanish, transforming day into night during a total solar eclipse.

Scheduled for April 8th, the peak of this astronomical event promises a duration of up to 4 minutes and 28 seconds in the path of total darkness—a timeframe twice as long as the 2017 solar eclipse that cast a shadow over U.S. skies.

Unlike its predecessor, this eclipse is set to traverse a more densely populated route, commencing its journey over Mexico’s Pacific coast, coursing through Texas and Oklahoma, and weaving its way across the Midwest, mid-Atlantic, and New England regions before exiting over eastern Canada into the Atlantic.

An estimated 44 million individuals reside within the 115-mile-wide path of totality stretching from Mazatlán, Mexico to Newfoundland, with approximately 32 million of them situated in the U.S., ensuring congested roads as crowds flock to witness this extraordinary cosmic phenomenon.

NASA’s eclipse program manager, Kelly Korreck, emphasizes the opportunity for many to experience the “wonder of the universe without going very far.”

Understanding the Eclipse:

During the total solar eclipse, the moon will perfectly align between the Earth and the sun, obscuring sunlight and casting a diagonal shadow from the southwest to the northeast across North America. Communities along this trajectory will briefly experience darkness, with fifteen U.S. states, including cities like Dallas, Little Rock, Indianapolis, and Montreal, poised for prime viewing.

For those not within the path of totality, partial eclipses will still offer a captivating spectacle. However, the magnitude of the sun’s obscuration will diminish with distance from the central path.

Extended Totality:

A fortuitous cosmic alignment will see the moon at its closest approach to Earth on the eve of the total solar eclipse, placing it just 223,000 miles away on the day of the event. This proximity will result in an elongated period of darkness as the moon appears slightly larger in the sky.

Additionally, the Earth and moon will be at their average distance of 93 million miles from the sun, contributing to the extended duration of totality, which could last up to an astounding 7 1/2 minutes.

Safety Measures:

Observers are cautioned against relying on sunglasses for viewing the eclipse. Instead, certified eclipse glasses are essential to protect against eye damage, especially during the partial phases. Special solar filters are also required for cameras, binoculars, and telescopes to ensure safe observation.

Where to Watch:

Communities along the path of totality are organizing various events, including star parties, festivals, and themed ceremonies, offering diverse experiences to eclipse enthusiasts. NASA will also be launching rockets and chasing the eclipse’s shadow from high-altitude planes, with live streams available for those unable to witness the event in person.

Future Eclipses:

While full solar eclipses occur periodically, the next total solar eclipse is slated for 2026, followed by another in 2033, with Alaska and Western Canada respectively receiving prominence. North America won’t witness another coast-to-coast eclipse until 2045, highlighting the rarity and anticipation surrounding such celestial occurrences.

With Carbondale, Illinois, serving as a unique intersection for both the 2017 and 2024 eclipses, NASA underscores the infrequency of totality’s return to the same location, typically spanning centuries.

As April approaches, anticipation mounts for this celestial extravaganza, offering a rare opportunity to witness nature’s grandeur and fostering a sense of awe and wonder among spectators across North America.

Simultaneously, a partial solar eclipse will be observable on April 20th in Southeast Asia, the East Indies, Australia, the Philippines, and New Zealand.

MANILA. The Philippine foreign ministry declared on Tuesday that it had received numerous maritime-related proposals from China, but asserted that they could not be entertained as they conflicted with the Southeast Asian nation’s national interests.

Recent months have witnessed escalating tensions between Manila and Beijing over disputed waters in the South China Sea. In a recent incident, the Philippines accused the China Coast Guard of firing water cannons at one of its vessels engaged in a resupply mission in the region, resulting in injuries to four navy personnel.

The latest proposal from China insisted on actions that would imply acknowledgment of China’s control and administration over the Ayungin Shoal, a proposition that the Philippines cannot entertain without contravening constitutional or international law, stated the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) in a statement.

The DFA’s response came following a Manila Times article quoting an unnamed “ranking Chinese official” alleging that Beijing’s attempts to normalize the situation in the South China Sea were met with inaction by the Philippine government.

“We were, therefore, surprised by China’s disclosure of sensitive details of our bilateral discussions,” the DFA expressed, emphasizing the Philippines’ sincere and good-faith approach to confidential negotiations.

According to reports, China presented 11 concept papers proposing management strategies for the Second Thomas Shoal and addressing fishing issues around the Scarborough Shoal. However, these proposals did not align with the Philippines’ interests, as per the Manila Times.

Despite a 2016 ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration refuting China’s expansive claims, Beijing persists in asserting its sovereignty over the South China Sea Islands, reiterating on Tuesday that China and the Philippines have no territorial disputes in the region.

In response, the Philippine DFA clarified that it did not disregard China’s proposals, indicating that it submitted counter-proposals. However, China’s subsequent counter-proposals failed to reflect the Philippines’ interests, particularly regarding the South China Sea.

Naglabas ng babala ang Philippine National Police (PNP) nitong Martes para sa mga netizens tungkol sa pagbibigay ng personal na impormasyon online at pag-click sa mga malicious website links.

Ito ay matapos na magtala ang PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG) ng 178 kaso ng “hijack profile” o identity theft mula Nobyembre 2023 hanggang Pebrero 2024 – kung saan ang 89 kaso ay naitala lamang noong Pebrero.

Sa “hijack profile scam,” nagaganap ang hindi awtorisadong pag-access sa partikular na social media account. Kapag napasok na ng hacker ang account, nagpapadala ito ng mensahe sa mga contacts ng may-ari ng account at karaniwang humihingi ng financial assistance sa ilalim ng pagpapanggap.

Ginagamit ng mga scammer ang iba’t ibang paraan upang mabuksan ang profile, tulad ng phishing, hacking o social engineering techniques, na labag sa Section 4 (a) (1) Illegal Access, (b) (2) Computer-related Fraud, at (3) Computer-related Identity Theft ng Republic Act 10175 o Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.

Ayon kay DepEd Assistant Secretary at Deputy Spokesperson Francis Bringas, “Last year meron nang situation na ganito at nakapag-issue na tayo ng directive para sa mga field offices na maaa­ring mag-suspend ng face to face classes…kung sobrang init na talaga ang nararamdaman sa kanilang mga school.”

Ang pahayag na ito ay kaugnay sa pag-anunsiyo ni Bacolod Mayor Albee Benitez ng suspensiyon ng face-to-face classes sa lahat ng pampubliko at pribadong paaralan, kasunod ng forecast ng PAGASA ng mataas na heat index nitong Marso 11 at 12.
