Brazilian President Lula compares Israel’s conflict with the Hamas terror group to the Holocaust

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has intensified his accusations against Israel, alleging the country of perpetrating genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. Lula’s latest remarks come in the wake of heightened tensions following his controversial comparison of Israel’s conflict with the Hamas terror group to the Holocaust.

Taking to social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, Lula reiterated his stance, affirming his refusal to compromise his principles amid mounting pressure to retract his previous statements. He condemned Israel’s actions, stating, “What the Israeli government is doing is not war, it is genocide. Children and women are being murdered.”

Israel has vehemently denied allegations of genocide, asserting that its military operations target Hamas militants rather than civilians. The Israeli government contends that Hamas bears responsibility for civilian casualties due to its use of civilian areas for military purposes.

Lula’s outspoken criticism has strained diplomatic relations between Brazil and Israel. Last week, Israel declared Lula persona non grata and summoned Brazil’s ambassador, demanding an apology in response to his initial comments.

The escalating rhetoric underscores the deepening divide over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with Lula’s remarks amplifying international scrutiny of Israel’s military actions in Gaza.

Full force kami this weekend, this Sabado and Linggo,” sabi ni Nuñez.

Astronomers spot three new tiny moons orbiting Neptune and Uranus

0

WASHINGTON. Astronomers have identified three previously unseen moons within our solar system – two encircling Neptune and one orbiting Uranus.

The unveiling of these distant celestial bodies was made possible through the utilization of advanced land-based telescopes located in Hawaii and Chile. The announcement came on Friday courtesy of the International Astronomical Union’s Minor Planet Center.

With this revelation, Neptune’s moon count climbs to 16, while Uranus now boasts a total of 28 moons in its retinue.

Among the newfound lunar companions, one of Neptune’s moons stands out for its exceptionally elongated orbit. This outermost moon takes approximately 27 years to complete a single revolution around Neptune, as described by Scott Sheppard, an astronomer at the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington, who played a pivotal role in the discovery.

The diminutive moon orbiting Uranus, estimated to measure a mere 5 miles (8 kilometers) in diameter, is presumed to be the smallest among the planet’s lunar family.

“We suspect that there may be many more smaller moons” awaiting discovery, remarked Sheppard, hinting at the possibility of further revelations in the future.

Patuloy ngayon ang malalimang imbestigasyon ng pulisya upang alamin kung may foul play sa pagkamatay ng dalawang kabataan.

Attack on cargo ship in Red Sea causes oil slick, worsening environmental concerns

0

CAIRO. An attack by Yemeni Houthi rebels on a Belize-flagged ship earlier this month caused an 18-mile (29-kilometer) oil slick, the U.S. military said Saturday. It also warned of the danger of a spill from the vessel’s cargo of fertilizer.

The Rubymar, a British-registered, Lebanese-operated cargo vessel, was attacked on Feb. 18 while sailing through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait that connects the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said.

The missile attack forced the crew to abandon the vessel, which had been on its way to Bulgaria after leaving Khorfakkan in the United Arab Emirates. It was transporting more than 41,000 tons of fertilizer, CENTCOM said in a statement.

The vessel suffered significant damage, which led to the slick, said the CENTCOM statement, warning that the ship’s cargo “could spill into the Red Sea and worsen this environmental disaster.”

“The Houthis continue to demonstrate disregard for the regional impact of their indiscriminate attacks, threatening the fishing industry, coastal communities, and imports of food supplies,” it said.

The Associated Press, relying on satellite images from Planet Labs PBC of the stricken vessel, reported Tuesday that the vessel was leaking oil in the Red Sea.

Yemen’s internationally recognized government on Saturday called for other countries and maritime-protection organizations to quickly address the oil slick and avert “a significant environmental disaster.

In a statement, the government, which sits in the southern city of Aden, said the vessel is heading toward the Hanish Islands, a Yemeni archipelago in the southern Red Sea.

Separately, CENTCOM said it launched attacks on Houthi-held areas in Yemen on Friday, destroying seven mobile anti-ship cruise missiles that were prepared to launch toward the Red Sea.

It described the strikes as “self-defense,” saying that the missiles “presented an imminent threat to merchant vessels and to the U.S. Navy ships in the region.”

CENTCOM didn’t give further details. Houthi-run media, however, reported strikes by the U.S. and the U.K. on the district of Durayhimi in the Red Sea province of Hodeida.

The U.S. military has in recent weeks launched waves of strikes on Houthi-held areas inside Yemen in response to the Houthis’ attacks on shipping routes in the Red Sea.

Since November, the rebels have repeatedly targeted ships in the Red Sea and surrounding waters. They claim to be acting over Israel’s war targeting Hamas in the Gaza Strip, however they have frequently targeted vessels with tenuous or no clear links to Israel, imperiling shipping in a key route for trade among Asia, the Mideast and Europe. The targeted vessels have included at least one with cargo for Iran, the Houthis’ main benefactor.

Thailand’s PM confirms Taylor Swift will not perform in Thailand due to an exclusive agreement with Singapore

Thailand’s Prime Minister, Srettha Thavisin, has confirmed that pop sensation Taylor Swift’s highly anticipated ‘Eras Tour’ will exclusively grace Singapore, bypassing other nations within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region. The revelation of this agreement between the Singapore government and the pop star has left fans across Thailand and other ASEAN countries disappointed.

Swift, renowned for her captivating performances and emotive songwriting, commands a massive global following, affectionately known as Swifties. The announcement of the ‘Eras Tour’ sparked excitement among her fan base worldwide. However, the exclusivity deal with Singapore has tempered the enthusiasm among Swifties in the ASEAN region.

Prime Minister Thavisin expressed his disappointment, recognizing Swift’s immense popularity across Thailand and the broader ASEAN region. While underscoring her global appeal, Thavisin highlighted the anticipation among Thai Swifties to witness Swift’s musical prowess live on stage.

During a business event in Bangkok, Thavisin disclosed that event promoter AEG had informed him about the arrangement. He revealed that the Singapore government proposed a financial package ranging from $2 million to $3 million per show, contingent upon securing exclusivity for the events.

Thavisin emphasized the potential economic benefits of hosting Swift in Thailand, citing the attraction of additional sponsors and tourists to the country. He also revealed the government’s efforts to entice more “A-list” artists to Thailand by year-end, despite the challenges associated with organizing such large-scale concerts.

Reports indicate that Taylor Swift previously had a sold-out concert scheduled at the Impact Arena Muang Thong Thani in Nonthaburi Province in 2014. However, the event was abruptly canceled without an official explanation.

The ‘Eras Tour’ marks Taylor Swift’s sixth concert tour, celebrating her illustrious career spanning ten albums to date. Recognized as her most expansive tour yet, it encompasses an impressive 151 shows across five continents. Notably, the ‘Eras Tour’ holds the distinction of being the highest-grossing tour of all time, surpassing the remarkable milestone of $1 billion in revenue.

In a solemn birthday address, Japan’s Emperor Naruhito mourns the deadly Noto quake

0

TOKYO. Japan’s Emperor Naruhito addressed the nation for the first time since a devastating earthquake struck the north-central region of Koto, delivering a solemn message on the occasion of his 64th birthday on Friday.

Expressing sorrow for the victims of the Jan. 1 earthquake, the ceremonial monarch offered prayers for their recovery and expressed his intention to visit the affected region to provide solace. Naruhito’s previously scheduled national address, typically held as part of the annual New Year’s event, was canceled in the aftermath of the quake. Neither the emperor nor Empress Masako have yet visited the disaster-stricken area. The Imperial Palace informed NHK Television that the couple postponed their visit to avoid disrupting ongoing recovery efforts, with plans now underway for a trip in late March.

Despite the cold and rainy weather, a crowd of well-wishers gathered at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo to hear the emperor’s words of condolence. Accompanied by Empress Masako, their daughter Aiko, and other relatives, Naruhito conveyed his condolences to the victims of the Noto Peninsula earthquake and extended his sympathy to the affected families.

“I would like once again to express my condolences to those who lost their lives in the Noto Peninsula earthquake last month and to convey my heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved families and those who were affected by the disaster,” Naruhito said from the balcony. “I wish every one of you a peaceful spring.”

The magnitude 7.6 earthquake on New Year’s Day claimed the lives of 241 individuals and displaced over 12,000 residents from their homes, with nine individuals still unaccounted for. Reconstruction efforts have been sluggish in the predominantly rural area, characterized by an aging population and renowned for its Wajima lacquerware and other traditional handicrafts.

In a video released by the Imperial Household Agency on Friday, Naruhito and Masako were seen admiring lacquerware boxes from Noto, with a large round lacquer tray and a Suzu pottery vase, both originating from the region, positioned behind them.

In a pre-recorded press conference also released on Friday, Naruhito expressed his hope to visit the area alongside Masako once local conditions permit. He urged for continued support towards the steady progress of recovery and reconstruction efforts amidst the ongoing challenges.

Since the Noto earthquake, Naruhito has made only one other public appearance, attending an event commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Tokyo police in mid-January. He also acknowledged the declining number of royals capable of performing public duties.

With the imperial household rapidly diminishing due to inheritance rules that restrict succession to males and expel female royals who marry outside the family, Naruhito currently has only two potential successors — his brother Akishino, 58, and his nephew Hisahito, 17. The situation has sparked debates regarding the future of Japan’s monarchy, with calls for reforms to allow female royals to retain their status within the family or inherit the throne.

“The situation is a matter that is related to the future of the Imperial Family,” Naruhito remarked, refraining from commenting on the system, as Japanese emperors are prohibited from engaging in political discourse.

Private lander makes first US moon landing in more than 50 years

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. A private lander on Thursday achieved a historic milestone by making the first U.S. touchdown on the moon in more than five decades. However, the mission encountered initial communication challenges, with a weak signal prompting flight controllers to swiftly work on improving contact.

Intuitive Machines, the company behind the craft, confirmed that despite the communication hurdles, the lander had successfully touched down upright. Yet, further details regarding its precise landing site near the moon’s south pole remained undisclosed. The live webcast from the company ended shortly after a solitary, faint signal was detected from the lander.

Mission director Tim Crain affirmed, “What we can confirm, without a doubt, is our equipment is on the surface of the moon,” reflecting the tension in the company’s control center in Houston.

CEO of Intuitive Machines, Steve Altemus, added, “I know this was a nail-biter, but we are on the surface and we are transmitting. Welcome to the moon.”

Data began streaming in approximately two hours post-touchdown, according to a company announcement.

This milestone marks the return of the United States to the lunar surface since NASA’s renowned Apollo missions. Additionally, Intuitive Machines has now become the first private entity to achieve a lunar landing, a feat previously accomplished by only five countries. Last month, another U.S. company, Astrobotic Technology, attempted a similar feat but failed to reach the moon, resulting in a crash back to Earth.

Both Intuitive Machines and Astrobotic Technology are participants in a NASA-supported initiative aimed at advancing lunar exploration and commercialization.

Congratulatory messages poured in swiftly, with Astrobotic expressing, “An incredible achievement. We can’t wait to join you on the lunar surface in the near future,” via X, formerly Twitter.

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson tweeted, “Intuitive Machines ‘aced the landing of a lifetime.'”

The moments leading up to touchdown were fraught with tension as the lander’s laser navigation system malfunctioned. The flight control team resorted to deploying an experimental NASA laser system as a last-minute solution, necessitating the lander to undertake an additional orbit around the moon.

With the revised plan in place, the lander, named Odysseus, descended from its orbit and successfully targeted a relatively flat area near the south pole amidst the rugged lunar terrain.

Following a nail-biting wait, controllers at the company’s command center finally received a weak signal from the lander approximately 250,000 miles away.

The six-footed carbon fiber and titanium lander, standing at 14 feet tall, carried six experiments for NASA. The space agency allocated $118 million to Intuitive Machines for the construction and execution of the mission, as part of efforts to commercialize lunar deliveries ahead of the anticipated return of astronauts in the coming years.

Intuitive Machines’ achievement contributes to the ongoing global efforts to explore and potentially exploit the resources of the moon. The U.S. last ventured into lunar exploration in 1972 through NASA’s Apollo program. The target landing site for Intuitive Machines was around 186 miles shy of the south pole, chosen for its potential resources such as frozen water.

Besides NASA’s experiments, the lander also carried payloads for Columbia Sportswear, sculptor Jeff Koons, and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
