LAUREL, Batangas.

Israeli forces rescue 2 hostages in dramatic raid amid Gaza airstrikes

0

TEL AVIV. Israel has announced the successful rescue of two Israeli-Argentinian hostages in a raid in Rafah, amidst heavy Israeli airstrikes targeting the southern Gazan city. The Israeli military confirmed that the two men, Fernando Simon Marman, 60, and Louis Har, 70, from Kibbutz Nir Yitzhak, were found in “good medical condition”.

Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, a spokesman for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), stated that the hostages were discovered on the second floor of a building in Rafah, following “heavy exchanges of fire at several locations simultaneously, with many terrorists.”

Residents in Rafah described the night of the raid as chaotic, with reports of heavy shooting and strong explosions. Abou Suhhaib, a resident in the Shaboura neighborhood, recounted hearing sounds of “strong explosions, as if hell had opened on the civilians,” and witnessing a helicopter landing amidst heavy gunfire.

Conflicting reports emerged regarding Palestinian casualties from the airstrikes, with AFP news agency citing Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry reporting “around 100 people” killed, while the Associated Press quoted local hospital officials stating at least 50 people were killed.

The rescued hostages were taken to Sheba Medical Center in central Israel for examination. Armon Aek, the acting director of the medical center, confirmed their stable condition and stated that initial examinations were conducted by the emergency room staff.

The hostages had been kidnapped by Hamas during the cross-border attack on October 7th, which triggered the ground invasion. The rescue operation comes after months of escalating violence between Israel and Hamas, resulting in numerous casualties on both sides.

Israel’s military operations in the Gaza Strip have drawn international concern, with several countries and international organizations warning against the planned offensive in Rafah, where an estimated 1.5 million people have sought refuge. UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron highlighted the dire situation, stating that “over half of Gaza’s population are sheltering in the area.”

US President Joe Biden reiterated the importance of protecting civilians in Rafah during a call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, emphasizing the need for a “credible and executable plan” to ensure their safety.

Despite international warnings, Prime Minister Netanyahu has insisted on proceeding with the offensive, citing the need to ensure Israel’s security. Hamas, however, has warned of “tens of thousands” of potential casualties and emphasized that any operation would jeopardize ongoing talks regarding the release of Israeli hostages held in Gaza.

A private jet crashed onto Florida interstate, killing 2

A plane crash on a Florida interstate claimed the lives of two individuals, identified as pilot Edward Daniel Murphy, aged 50, and co-pilot Ian Frederick Hofmann, aged 65, according to law enforcement officials from the Collier County Sheriff’s Office on Saturday.

The crash, which occurred Friday afternoon, also left three individuals injured. The survivors were identified as crew member Sydney Ann Bosmans, aged 23, and passengers Aaron Baker, aged 35, and Audra Green, aged 23, all hailing from Columbus, Ohio. They were transported to a local hospital, although their current conditions remain undisclosed.

In the moments preceding the catastrophe, the pilot calmly communicated with air traffic control, indicating the dire situation. “We’re clear to land, but we’re not gonna make the runway. We’ve lost both engines,” the pilot relayed just before the private jet attempted an emergency landing on Interstate 75.

Witnesses recounted the harrowing scene as the aircraft collided with a vehicle on the highway, with the wing of the plane dragging a car before striking a wall. The impact resulted in a fiery explosion, engulfing the area in flames and billowing black smoke.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has initiated an investigation into the crash site located near Naples, Florida. The flight, which originated from Ohio State University Airport in Columbus, Ohio, was en route to Naples when the tragic incident unfolded.

“We sent fire trucks with special foam to the scene, and three of the five people on board were taken from the wreckage alive,” stated Robin King, spokesperson for the Naples Airport Authority.

Eyewitness Brianna Walker described the terrifying moment when the plane narrowly missed her car before careening onto the highway. “It’s seconds that separated us from the car in front of us,” she recalled. “The wing pulverized this one car.”

The aircraft, operated by Hop-a-Jet Worldwide Charter based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, had been scheduled to return to its base on Friday afternoon, according to FlightAware aircraft tracker. Hop-a-Jet released a statement expressing concern for the well-being of those involved in the accident and announced plans to dispatch a team to the crash site for investigation.

Meanwhile, authorities have clarified that the aircraft is not affiliated with Ohio State University. A spokesperson for the university affirmed they had no further information regarding the incident.

Federal authorities anticipate issuing a preliminary report on the crash’s cause within 30 days, as investigations into the tragic event continue.

Landslide death toll in Davao de Oro climbs to 54

0

NABUNTURAN, Davao de Oro. The death toll from a devastating landslide in the southern Philippines has surged to 54, announced the provincial government on Sunday, as rescue efforts persistently unearth more victims from the debris.

The landslide, which occurred on Tuesday night near a gold mine in Maco town in the province of Davao de Oro, engulfed homes and vehicles transporting workers to the Apex Mining site.

In a Facebook post, the provincial government of Davao de Oro revised the death toll from an earlier count of 37 to 54, as rescue teams discovered additional casualties amidst the mud and rubble.

Currently, 63 individuals remain unaccounted for, although the provincial government has cautioned that this figure is subject to verification. The landslide also left 32 people wounded.

Edward Macapili, an official from Davao de Oro, disclosed that over 300 personnel are engaged in the rescue operation. However, adverse weather conditions, including heavy rainfall and thick mud, coupled with the looming threat of further landslides, have impeded progress.

Despite the challenging circumstances, rescue efforts resumed on Sunday morning, with Macapili conceding that the likelihood of finding survivors at this stage is slim. Nonetheless, he affirmed the unwavering commitment of the rescue team to persevere in their search and retrieval mission.

“The rescue team is doing its best, even if it’s very difficult,” Macapili conveyed to Reuters over the phone.

The province of Davao de Oro has been grappling with relentless torrential rains in recent weeks, exacerbating the risk of flooding and landslides across the region.

Fake lawyer involved in robbery extortion apprehended by Calabarzon police

CALAMBA CITY, Laguna. The Regional Intelligence Division-Regional Special Operations Unit 4A (RID-RSOU4A), in collaboration with the Biñan City Police Station, orchestrated a successful entrapment operation on February 6, 2024, leading to the apprehension of an individual engaged in robbery extortion and usurpation of authority in Biñan City, Laguna.

The suspect, identified as Datu Phe Piang Mastura, was apprehended following a joint operation at a restaurant located in Adelina 3 Commercial, Brgy Sto Tomas, Biñan City. Investigations revealed that Mastura had falsely portrayed himself as legal counsel for the Campos family, the previous proprietors of a commercial property situated at Adelina Complex, Sto. Tomas, Biñan City.

Under the guise of legal representation, the suspect unlawfully demanded monthly rental payments from numerous tenants, despite lacking the requisite legal credentials. Disturbed by the suspect’s actions, the aggrieved parties, choosing to remain anonymous, sought assistance from RID-RSOU4A and Biñan CPS. Subsequent inquiries disclosed that Mastura was not listed with the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP), prompting authorities to execute an entrapment operation to apprehend him.

Operating under the alias Datu Marcuz A. Mastura, aged 27 and residing at Brgy. 710, Malate, Manila, the suspect also falsely presented himself as the Presidential Assistant on Intelligence Group and Investigation. He managed to extort P700,000.00 pesos from his victims.

During the operation, law enforcement officials recovered incriminating evidence from Mastura, including a Malacañang Palace ID under the name Datu Phe G. Mastura, a Social Welfare identification card named Datu Marcuz A Mastura, counterfeit currency, and a Macbook.

Commending the successful execution of the entrapment operation, Police Regional Office Calabarzon Regional Director PBGen Paul Kenneth T. Lucas praised the collaborative efforts that led to the suspect’s arrest. Director Lucas also urged other victims to come forward and pursue legal action against the apprehended suspect.

Lucas emphasized.

Meanwhile, Mastura was presented to the Biñan City Office of the City Prosecutor on February 07, 2024, for inquest proceedings concerning charges of robbery, extortion, and usurpation of authority. The arrested suspect is presently detained at the Biñan Component City Police Station pending further legal proceedings.

Egypt threatens peace treaty suspension over Israeli incursion into Gaza border town

0

RAFAH, Gaza Strip. Egypt has issued a stern warning, indicating its readiness to suspend its peace treaty with Israel in response to any Israeli military intervention in the densely populated Gaza border town of Rafah. The potential suspension of the Camp David Accords, a foundational agreement for regional stability for nearly fifty years, has emerged as a significant development amid escalating tensions in the region, according to two Egyptian officials and a Western diplomat on Sunday.

The threat from Egypt comes in the wake of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s assertion that deploying troops into Rafah is imperative to secure victory in the ongoing four-month-long conflict against the Palestinian militant organization Hamas.

Rafah, which has become a refuge for over half of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents fleeing violence in other parts of the territory, now faces the specter of further upheaval. The looming threat of a mass exodus, feared by Egypt, could exacerbate an already dire humanitarian crisis. The densely populated town, inundated with makeshift tent camps and United Nations-operated shelters near the border, is ill-equipped to handle a surge of hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians, raising concerns of an irreversible humanitarian catastrophe.

As aid organizations sound alarms over the potential consequences of an offensive in Rafah, emphasizing the catastrophic impact on the already fragile humanitarian situation in Gaza, the stakes are high for both Israel and Egypt. The United Nations has underscored the gravity of the situation, highlighting that approximately 80% of Gaza’s residents have been displaced from their homes, and a quarter of the population is facing starvation.

Meanwhile, Hamas has issued warnings through its Al-Aqsa television station, cautioning that any incursion into Rafah would derail ongoing mediation efforts led by the United States, Egypt, and Qatar aimed at brokering a ceasefire and securing the release of Israeli hostages.

In response to mounting concerns, Netanyahu, speaking on ABC News “This Week with George Stephanopoulos,” suggested the possibility of civilian evacuation from Rafah to northern areas purportedly cleared by the Israeli military. However, such a maneuver would entail logistical challenges and may not adequately address the humanitarian crisis on the ground.

Despite Netanyahu’s assertions, heavy fighting persists in various parts of Gaza, including central areas and the southern city of Khan Younis. A ground operation in Rafah could potentially disrupt vital supply routes, further exacerbating the already dire humanitarian situation.

Alluding to the severity of the situation, European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell condemned the prospect of an Israeli offensive on Rafah, warning of dire consequences for both humanitarian conditions and regional stability.

The escalating tensions underscore the fragility of the peace accords established by the Camp David agreement, which ended decades of hostilities between Egypt and Israel. The agreement, brokered by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter in the late 1970s, has long been regarded as a cornerstone of stability in the region.

Egypt, which shares a border with Gaza, has fortified its frontier with extensive security measures, including a significant buffer zone and fortified barriers. However, concerns persist that a breach in the border could unleash a humanitarian crisis of unprecedented proportions, potentially overwhelming Egyptian authorities’ capacity to respond effectively.

As the standoff between Israel and Egypt intensifies, both sides face critical decisions that could have far-reaching implications for regional security and stability. Amidst mounting international pressure and concerns over the worsening humanitarian situation, the fate of Rafah hangs in the balance, with the potential to reshape the dynamics of the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

Nandiyan ‘yung kalaban mo ang disinformation because of social media.

“(A)ctivism per se, I think it’s still the most important part of my life na hindi ko lang iniisip ang sarili ko. And, you know, and my radar every day until now at age 71 is still about what’s happening in society.

“And that’s I think it’s a gift na I will always cherish na you’re always looking at, you know, doing something good for others. And it aligns with my own foundation as a Christian. Ganu’n. Nu’ng bata pa ako. Because I was brought up as a Baptist by my mom.

Iniimbita raw siya na sumali in one of those youth organizations ng militante. Study history. And, you know, take critical thinking as one of your ano, as one of your foundations or your pursuit.”
