Hamas invites Elon Musk to witness Gaza destruction

0

Hamas has extended an invitation to Elon Musk to visit Gaza and observe the devastation caused by Israeli strikes on the Palestinian territory. This invitation follows Musk’s recent inspection of a kibbutz, Kfar Aza, alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which had been targeted by Hamas.

“We invite him to visit Gaza to see the extent of the massacres and destruction committed against the people of Gaza, in compliance with the standards of objectivity and credibility,” stated Osama Hamdan, a senior Hamas official, during a press conference in Beirut on Tuesday,

Musk’s appearance with the Israeli prime minister at Kfar Aza drew criticism from Israelis, especially considering his recent controversial tweets. On November 15, Musk endorsed a post that accused Jews of “hatred against whites” and the next day supported a post that said: “Everyone is allowed to be proud of their race, except for white people.” These retweets were not mentioned during Musk’s visit to Kfar Aza.

During his visit, Musk aligned his views with Netanyahu’s portrayal of the conflict, stating, “Those that are intent on murder must be neutralized. The propaganda must stop that is training people to be murderers in the future. And then, making Gaza prosperous. And if that happens, I think it will be a good future.”

Musk’s visit to Israel occurred during a pause in the Israeli military campaign to allow for the release of hostages by Hamas and the freeing of Palestinian prisoners by Israel. However, Netanyahu has pledged to resume operations once the temporary ceasefire concludes.

The death toll among people in Gaza, estimated by Hamas-run authorities, is reported to be more than 14,000. Hamdan called on US President Biden to review the US relationship with Israel and to stop supplying them with weapons.

While Biden has generally supported Israel, his administration has expressed unease at the high civilian death rate and called for Israel to change its tactics before extending the conflict into southern Gaza. The article was amended on November 29, 2023, to remove an incorrect description of Elon Musk as Tesla’s founder. Musk is included in the company’s list of co-founders.

Mediators work to extend Gaza truce amid ongoing hostage swaps

0

RAFAH, Gaza Strip. On the final day of the current truce in Gaza, international mediators made strides on Wednesday towards its extension, urging Hamas to continue releasing hostages in exchange for the freedom of Palestinian prisoners and continued relief from Israel’s air and ground offensive. The truce is set to expire within the next 24 hours.

Israel has expressed satisfaction with the recent release of numerous hostages, committing to maintaining the truce as long as Hamas continues this trend. However, the broader objective of dismantling the armed group that has governed Gaza for 16 years, responsible for the initial deadly attack on Israel triggering the conflict, appears increasingly challenging.

Despite weeks of intense aerial bombardment and a ground invasion causing significant destruction in northern Gaza and claiming thousands of Palestinian lives, Hamas remains resilient in its rule. This resilience is evident in the group’s ability to engage in intricate negotiations, enforce cease-fires among various armed factions, and orchestrate the smooth release of hostages.

Key Hamas figures, including Yehya Sinwar, have likely relocated to the south, alongside hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians seeking refuge in overcrowded shelters. An Israeli ground invasion in the south could potentially target Hamas leaders and dismantle the remaining militant infrastructure, including extensive tunnel networks. However, such a move would come at a significant human cost and entail destruction that the United States, Israel’s primary ally, seems reluctant to endorse.

The Biden administration has communicated to Israel that any resumption of the offensive must be conducted with heightened precision, particularly in the southern regions. This strategic approach may not lead to an immediate capitulation of Hamas, and mounting international pressure for a lasting cease-fire is becoming increasingly evident.

“How far both sides will be prepared to go in trading hostages and prisoners for the pause is about to be tested, but the pressures and incentives for both to stick with it are at the moment stronger than the incentives to go back to war,” remarked Martin Indyk, a former U.S. ambassador to Israel, in a commentary on X.

Fake babies, real Horror: Deepfakes from Gaza war raise concerns about AI misleading power

WASHINGTON. In the midst of images depicting the destruction in Gaza, certain ones have sparked genuine horror: images of bloodied, abandoned infants. These visuals, circulating widely online since the beginning of the war, are, in fact, deepfakes crafted using artificial intelligence. Closer inspection reveals subtle clues, such as oddly curled fingers or eyes with an unnatural light, exposing the signs of digital manipulation.

Despite the digital deception, the outrage these images aim to incite is undeniably authentic. The Israel-Hamas conflict has vividly demonstrated the potential of AI as a propaganda tool, generating lifelike images of devastation. Throughout the war, digitally altered images disseminated on social media have been employed to make false claims about casualty responsibility or to deceive the public about non-existent atrocities.

While most false claims related to the war didn’t necessitate AI and originated from conventional sources, technological advancements, with little oversight, are becoming more frequent. This highlights the stark reality that AI has the potential to evolve into another form of weaponry, offering a glimpse of what may occur in future conflicts, elections, and significant events.

Jean-Claude Goldenstein, CEO of CREOpoint, a tech company utilizing AI to assess online claims, warns, “It’s going to get worse—a lot worse—before it gets better.” The company has compiled a database of the most viral deepfakes emerging from Gaza. Goldenstein emphasizes that with generative AI, involving pictures, videos, and audio, escalation beyond current levels is anticipated.

Some instances involve repurposing photos from other conflicts or disasters, presenting them as recent. In other cases, generative AI programs have generated images from scratch, like a viral image of a crying baby amidst bombing wreckage during the conflict’s early days.

AI-generated content also includes videos depicting purported Israeli missile strikes, tanks moving through ruined neighborhoods, and families searching through rubble for survivors.

Many of these fakes aim to evoke a strong emotional reaction by featuring the bodies of babies, children, or families. Propagandists are adept at exploiting people’s deepest impulses and anxieties, emphasizing the emotional impact to further disseminate disinformation.

Imran Ahmed, CEO of the Center for Countering Digital Hate, notes that whether it’s a deepfake or an actual image, the emotional impact on the viewer is the same. The more abhorrent the image, the more likely it is to be remembered and shared, inadvertently spreading disinformation.

Similar deceptive AI-generated content emerged after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, indicating the persistent nature of easily debunked misinformation.

With major elections approaching in various countries, the risk of AI and social media spreading lies has raised concerns. Lawmakers in Washington, including U.S. Rep. Gerry Connolly, emphasize the need for investment in AI tools to counteract other AI.

Several startup tech firms worldwide are developing programs to detect deepfakes, affix watermarks to images for origin verification, or scan text to identify specious claims introduced by AI.

As technology advances, experts emphasize the necessity for improved regulations, voluntary industry standards, and substantial investments in digital literacy programs to address the challenges posed by AI disinformation effectively. The goal is not just detection but a comprehensive solution to tackle the broader political and social implications of AI manipulation.

China attributes the increase in respiratory illnesses to influenza and other identified pathogens

0

BEIJING. China’s health ministry has declared that the recent spike in respiratory illnesses across the country, drawing the attention of the World Health Organization (WHO), is attributed to the flu and other identified pathogens. The announcement comes amid global concern and signals a critical moment for the country’s health infrastructure.

A spokesperson for the National Health Commission revealed that the surge in respiratory infections results from a confluence of familiar viruses, including the influenza virus, rhinoviruses, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), adenovirus, and bacteria such as mycoplasma pneumoniae. This bacterium is a common culprit for respiratory tract infections, according to the health ministry.

In response to the growing health crisis, the ministry has called on local authorities to enhance their efforts, urging the opening of more fever clinics and the promotion of vaccinations, especially among children and the elderly. With China facing a surge in respiratory illnesses during its first full winter since the removal of COVID-19 restrictions, the ministry spokesman, Mi Feng, emphasized the need to extend service hours and increase the supply of medicines in relevant clinics.

Mi Feng further advised the public to wear masks and implored local authorities to concentrate on preventing the spread of illnesses in crowded places, such as schools and nursing homes.

The WHO, earlier this week, formally requested information from China concerning a potentially alarming increase in respiratory illnesses and clusters of pneumonia in children, as reported by various media outlets and a global infectious disease monitoring service.

The emergence of new flu strains or other viruses with pandemic potential often begins with undiagnosed clusters of respiratory illness, as witnessed in the initial reports of SARS and COVID-19. Chinese authorities had previously attributed the rise in respiratory diseases to the lifting of COVID-19 lockdown restrictions, a phenomenon observed in other countries following the easing of pandemic-related measures.

During a teleconference on Thursday, Chinese health officials provided the WHO with the requested data, indicating an uptick in hospital admissions of children due to diseases, including bacterial infection, RSV, influenza, and common cold viruses since October. While Chinese officials assured the WHO that hospitals were not overwhelmed, the global health organization expressed the need for further information.

Notably, the WHO rarely makes public requests for detailed information from countries, usually handling such matters internally. In this case, the organization invoked an international legal mechanism to seek additional data from China.

Reports from within China suggest that the outbreaks have strained some hospitals in the northern regions, including Beijing. Health authorities have encouraged the public to take children with less severe symptoms to clinics and other facilities.

The WHO emphasized that, at present, there is insufficient information to thoroughly assess the risk posed by the reported cases of respiratory illness in children. Accusations of a lack of transparency have surfaced, recalling past criticisms of Chinese authorities and the WHO in their initial handling of the COVID-19 pandemic that originated in Wuhan in December 2019.

Israel-Hamas truce hangs in the balance, war looms

0

TEL AVIV, Israel. Israel and Hamas have agreed to extend their truce for the fifth consecutive day, but the precarious peace seems poised on the edge as both sides brace for a potential resumption of hostilities.

Under the terms of the truce, Hamas has pledged to release additional civilian hostages, a move aimed at stalling the anticipated return to conflict. Israel, however, faces mounting international pressure to exercise restraint and minimize harm to Palestinian civilians in the event of renewed fighting.

The truce extension, agreed upon until Wednesday, includes planned exchanges of hostages between the two parties. Despite the temporary reprieve, Israel has unequivocally declared its intent to resume the war with “full force” if it becomes evident that no further hostages will be freed under the existing agreement.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is scheduled to visit the region later this week, marking his third visit since the outbreak of hostilities. The Biden administration is expected to advocate for an extension of the truce and the release of more hostages, insisting that Israel avoid “significant further displacement” and minimize casualties among Palestinian civilians.

Unnamed U.S. officials, citing conversations with Israel, reveal that the Biden administration has underscored the necessity for precise military operations, particularly in southern Gaza. The officials stress the importance of avoiding the kind of mass casualties seen in the northern regions.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has reiterated the call for a lasting ceasefire and the release of all hostages, reflecting widespread international support for ending the conflict.

Hamas and other militant factions still hold approximately 160 individuals, a fraction of the 240 seized in their October 7 assault that triggered the conflict. While the existing framework brokered by Qatar, Egypt, and the U.S. could potentially extend the truce for two more weeks, Hamas is expected to make higher demands for the release of captive soldiers.

Israel remains resolute in its commitment to ending Hamas’ 16-year rule in Gaza and dismantling its military capabilities. The nation asserts that Hamas is responsible for the escalating casualty toll, accusing the group of using civilians as human shields in densely populated residential areas.

Hostages Released

On Monday, Hamas fulfilled its commitment by releasing 11 women and children, the final group in the initial ceasefire agreement that took effect last Friday. Israel reciprocated by releasing 33 Palestinian prisoners.

To date, 51 Israelis and 19 hostages of other nationalities have been freed under the truce, while 150 Palestinians have been released from Israeli prisons. Israel has pledged to extend the ceasefire by one day for every 10 additional hostages released.

Most of the released Palestinian prisoners were teenagers accused of various offenses, ranging from throwing stones to attempting deadly attacks. These individuals are viewed by Palestinians as heroes resisting occupation.

While most of the freed hostages appear to be in good physical condition, an 84-year-old woman released on Sunday was hospitalized in critical condition due to a lack of access to medication during captivity. Though largely staying out of the public eye, details of their captivity are starting to emerge.

In an interview with Israel’s Channel 13, 78-year-old Ruti Munder, one of the freed hostages, described initially adequate conditions that deteriorated as shortages took hold. She revealed being kept in a “suffocating” room and sleeping on plastic chairs with a sheet for nearly 50 days.

The start of the war saw Israel imposing a total blockade on Gaza, allowing only a trickle of humanitarian aid before the ceasefire. Widespread shortages of food, water, medicine, and fuel, coupled with a territory-wide power blackout, have added to the humanitarian crisis in the region.

Pope Francis undergoes intravenous antibiotic treatment for lung inflammation

0

ROME. Pope Francis is currently receiving intravenous antibiotics to address a lung inflammation, prompting a reduction in his appointments, as confirmed by the Vatican on Monday.

The Pontiff disclosed his health condition on Sunday, citing the inflammation as the reason for missing his usual weekly appearance in St. Peter’s Square. Instead, he delivered his blessings from the chapel within the Vatican hotel where he resides.

Matteo Bruni, the director of the Vatican’s press office, issued a statement on Monday revealing that the inflammation has led to respiratory challenges for Pope Francis, who will turn 87 next month. Bruni reassured the public that the Pope’s condition is stable, without a fever, and showing clear improvement in respiratory functions. A CT scan conducted on Saturday in a Rome hospital ruled out pneumonia.

In support of the Pope’s recovery, Bruni stated that certain significant commitments scheduled for the coming days would be postponed to allow him to focus on recuperation. However, appointments of an institutional nature or those easier to maintain given the current health conditions will proceed as planned.

While Bruni did not specify the postponed appointments, Pope Francis, on Monday morning, hosted the president of Paraguay, Santiago Peña, in a private half-hour-long audience at his residence, bypassing the usual Apostolic Palace venue.

Despite adjustments to his schedule, Pope Francis expressed his commitment to a three-day trip to the United Arab Emirates starting on December 1. During this visit, he intends to deliver a speech on climate change at the upcoming United Nations COP28 climate talks.

During Sunday’s blessing, a visible bandage on the Pope’s right hand indicated the ongoing intravenous treatment for his lung inflammation.
