Filipino community in Hawaii grapples with devastating wildfires

0

Filipinos were among victims in the aftermath of the deadly wildfires in Maui, Hawaii that has so far claimed the lives of 93 people.

Speaking to CNN Philippines’ New Day on Monday, John Bernard Flores said two brush fires struck on Aug. 8. One was contained in the morning, but strong winds from a hurricane fanned the flames.

Flores said he was separated from his family because of heavy traffic on Lahainaluna road, and he only reconnected with them the next day.

He said he and his family are now in a safe place.

Before flying back to Hawaii from Las Vegas, Joana Marie Acosta, Flores’ girlfriend, said she relied on social media to get updates as communication was down in the disaster area.

Acosta said her family is still in Lahaina seeking shelter in hotels.

Speaking to CNN Philippines’ Balitaan, Filipino-American Bella Rose Tumapat said her family visits relatives in Maui every year.

Tumapat said she, her brother, and parents arrived from California days before the wildfires.

“On Tuesday, we woke up and we didn’t have power because of the hurricane winds, so couldn’t get in contact with anyone. And then that afternoon and evening, we could see the fire from our balcony, and we were just praying it wasn’t Lahaina where our family lives,” she shared.

Tumapat said they tried going to Lahaina the following day to check on relatives, but they couldn’t get through.

“So we went to higher ground in Kapalua to see if we can contact anyone and that’s where we heard that all of Lahaina burned down,” she said.

She said she got in contact with a cousin, who told her that all houses were destroyed. They also didn’t know if all family members survived.

Upon reconnecting with her relatives, Tumapat said she learned some of them jumped into the water while one of her aunts stayed in her car while her surroundings burned.

Tumapat said all family members are safe, but added some people they know remain missing.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said Sunday the government is ready to help Filipinos in the Maui wildfires. It added it did not expect requests for repatriation since the victims are are permanent residents of Hawaii.

“We urge the public to immediately report any person to the authorities using such bills in any transaction for appropriate action as the “ber months’ or the peak shopping season draws near,” pahayag ni Mariano matapos hulihin ng pulisya si Kevin Jhon Soncio, 30 anyos na dating sundalo ng Army.

Nahaharap ngayon ang suspek sa kasong paglabag sa Article 168 ng Revised Penal Code (Illegal possession and use of false Treasury or Bank Notes and Other Instruments of Credit), usurpation of authority, at paggawa ng pekeng mga pampublikong dokumento.

Popular weight-loss drugs linked to anesthesia complications, anesthesiologists warn

0

Patients who are on popular weight-loss medications like Wegovy and Ozempic may face heightened risks of life-threatening complications during surgeries or procedures requiring anesthesia, due to the potential for food and liquid inhalation into the lungs while sedated. This concern has prompted anesthesiologists in the U.S. and Canada to raise alarms and advocate for extended cessation periods of these medications prior to medical interventions.

These blockbuster drugs, which have gained widespread use for inducing weight loss, can significantly slow down digestion processes, increasing the risk of pulmonary aspiration, a condition where food or liquid enters the lungs, leading to severe lung damage, infections, and even death. Dr. Ion Hobai, an anesthesiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital, emphasized the gravity of this issue, stating that all individuals taking these medications should be aware of the potential risks associated with anesthesia.

Statistics from healthcare technology company Komodo Health revealed that nearly 6 million prescriptions for weight-loss drugs like Wegovy and Ozempic were issued between January and May in the U.S. for individuals without diabetes. These drugs mimic gut hormones responsible for post-meal responses, regulate appetite signals, and slow stomach emptying to promote weight loss.

The American Society of Anesthesiologists issued guidance in June, recommending that patients pause their daily weight-loss medications on the day of surgery and halt weekly injections for at least a week before sedation procedures. Dr. Michael Champeau, the society’s president, highlighted anecdotal reports from across the country as a basis for this action, which aimed to address emerging problems, including aspiration.

Dr. Hobai and a group of colleagues published a call to action in the Canadian Journal of Anesthesia, urging an even longer cessation period of about three weeks before undergoing sedation. They argued that this duration corresponds to the active medication’s presence in the body, providing a safer margin.

However, experts like Dr. Philip Jones, a Mayo Clinic anesthesiologist and deputy editor-in-chief of the journal, acknowledged that there is not enough evidence to definitively determine the ideal duration for medication cessation. Patients often may not have access to healthcare providers early enough to adhere to a three-week hiatus before procedures.

While aspiration occurs in 1 out of every 2,000 to 3,000 sedation procedures, case reports indicated issues among recent semaglutide (active ingredient in Wegovy) users who followed the standard fasting instructions. Patients in these reports encountered complications even when fasting for as long as 20 hours prior to their procedures.

Several cases demonstrating potential complications were documented, including that of a Boston man who required intubation and intensive care due to respiratory failure, despite fasting for 18 hours after starting Wegovy. Another case involved a woman in North Carolina who, despite fasting for 10 hours, faced the risk of aspiration during an endoscopy.

Dr. Elisa Lund, an anesthesiologist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine, reported an exponential increase in similar cases, correlating with the growing use of these weight-loss medications.

As experts await further research, the American Society of Anesthesiologists advises doctors to treat patients who haven’t paused the medication as if they have full stomachs. Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer of Ozempic, Wegovy, and similar drugs, maintains that its clinical trials and post-marketing safety data do not establish a direct link between these medications and aspiration, although they acknowledge the medications’ propensity to delay stomach emptying and warn of possible gastrointestinal side effects.

Individuals using these medications are advised to discuss risks and benefits with their doctors before undergoing sedation and to adhere to additional precautions, should surgery or procedures be necessary.

Mangingisda, planong gawing reservist sa West Philippine Sea

0

Plano ng Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) na gawing reservist ang mga mangingisda sa Kalayaan Island upang makatulong sa pagbabantay sa West Philippine Sea.

Ayon kay AFP Chief of Staff Lt. Gen.

Casago study: NAIA ranked among ‘Worst’ Airports in Asia for queueing times

0

The Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) has been included in the list of the worst airports in Asia due to prolonged waiting times for passengers in queues, according to a study conducted by a vacation rental management firm.

Casago conducted an analysis of passenger reviews regarding queuing times, which were rated on a scale of 1 star to 5 stars on airlinequality.com. The study only considered airports with 20 or more passenger reviews.

According to the findings, NAIA secured the 8th position among the 10 worst airports for waiting in the continent. Only 18.11% of passengers expressed high satisfaction with the queuing times at the airport.

NAIA has previously faced criticism, as certain surveys labeled it as one of the least favorable airports for business class travelers and among the most stressful ones in Asia.

In contrast, Kuwait International Airport received only 11.11% of reviews that achieved 4 to 5-star ratings, earning it the unfortunate distinction of being the worst in Asia in terms of waiting times.

Meanwhile, Singapore’s Changi International Airport is widely regarded as the world’s best in delivering a seamless experience to passengers. A remarkable 74.50% of travelers awarded it 4 to 5-star ratings on the travel website.

Casago mentioned, “Despite being one of the largest transportation hubs in Asia and consistently ranking as one of the busiest airports globally, Changi Airport has consistently earned the title of the ‘World’s Best Airport’ by Skytrax a dozen times. It has also been praised for its cleanliness, a point often highlighted in passenger reviews.”

CNN Philippines sought a comment from the Manila International Airport Authority.

Casago pointed out that the prolonged queues and waiting times in airports are a result of the continuous surge in air travel. They explained, “Following two years of lockdown restrictions, airlines and airports worldwide struggled to meet the post-pandemic demand of 2022, resulting in a significant influx of travelers and leading to delays and bottlenecks in the form of long queues.”

Furthermore, Casago advised passengers to check-in online, consider applying for TSA PreCheck, choose flights departing during off-peak times, and utilize priority lanes whenever possible to mitigate lengthy queues.
