PNP 100% ng handa sa SONA 2023

Iniulat ng Philippine National Police nitong Sabado na 100 porsyento na silang handa para sa ikalawang State of the Nation Address (SONA) ni Pangulong Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. bukas, Hulyo 24.

“100% nang ready ang Philippine National Police para i-secure at bigyan ng seguridad ang ikalawang SONA ng ating Pangulo,” ayon kay PNP public information office chief Police Brigadier General Redrico Maranan sa isang radio interview.

Sinabi rin ni Maranan na wala silang na-monitor na anumang banta bago sumapit ang ikalawang SONA ni Marcos.

Nakatakdang magtalaga ang PNP ng mahigit 22,000 pulis sa Metro Manila sa Lunes, ayon kay Maranan.

Ang mga drone ay ipapakalat sa Batasan Complex sa panahon ng SONA upang matiyak ang kaligtasan ng publiko at masubaybayan ang mga posibleng banta, ayon sa kanya.

“Gagamitin ‘yung ating mga drone sa area ng Batasan Complex. No-fly zone ito dun sa mga unauthorized drone. ‘Yung PNP at iba pang katuwang natin sa security ay gagamit ng drones. Ito ay awtorisado at pinapayagan. Ang main na tinitignan [ng mga drone] ay ‘yung kabuuan ng Batasan Complex; mga kalsada; movement ng mga tao,” aniya.

Muli rin niyang iginiit na ang PNP ay magsasagawa ng maximum tolerance para sa mga protesters na lalahok sa mga rally.

Sa umaga ng SONA sa Hulyo 24, magtitipon ang iba’t ibang grupo sa iba’t ibang lugar para magsagawa ng sariling programa bago sila magsanib sa Commonwealth-Tandang Sora area sa Quezon City.

Isang labor group ang magsasagawa ng forum sa isang covered court sa Quezon Memorial Circle. Isang grupo ng mga guro ang magsasagawa ng “zumba protest” para ipanawagan ang pagtaas ng sweldo.

“Sinabihan natin sila (mga militanteng grupo) na they should police their own ranks. Tignan din nila ang kanilang mga kasamahan at sumunod sa permit na ibinigay ng LGU. Ating i-o-observe ang maximum tolerance. ‘Yung restraint ng security sector para hindi magkaroon ng collision against sa mga grupo [na magkikilos protesta] ay ating i-e-exercise, pero ang maximum tolerance ay may linya. ‘Wag nating i-cross ‘yung linya ng maximum tolerance na may paglabag sa mga umiiral na batas,” dagdag pa niya.

General Mariano Alvarez, Cavite. Nadakip ng mga awtoridad sa loob ng isang motel sa Sta. Rosa City, Laguna  ang isang magnobyo at isa pang kasama matapos nilang holdapin ang isang convenience store sa Brgy. San Gabriel, dito noong Biyernes ng gabi.

Napag alaman na sina Jaime Christ Camerino, 20 anyos na residente ng Barangay Anabu 2D, Imus, Cavite at Maricel M. Bautista, 33 anyos na tubong Virac, Catanduanes, ang mga suspek ayon kay Police Lt.Col. Dwight Fonte, hepe ng Sta. Rosa City PoliceStation.

Sa follow-up operation ng mga pulis, naaresto rin ang kasama nina Camerino sa panghoholdap na si Glenn Urbano, 25 anyos na residente ng Perpetual Village 8, Shapell Homes Apartment, Brgy. Habay 1, Bacoor City, Cavite.

Batay sa imbestigasyon ng mga pulis, 11:00, Biyernes ng gabi nang pasukin ng mga suspek ang Alfamart store sa San Gabriel, GMA. Unang pumasok si Bautista na nagpanggap na customer, at sumunod sina Camerino at Urbano na agad nagdeklara ng holdap.

Kinuha ng tatlo ang pera sa kaha at iba pang mga paninda sa nasabing convenience store pati na rin ang cellphone ng dalawang staff bago tumakas sakay ng isang motorsiklo.

Agad nagtungo sa malapit na himpilan ng pulis ang dalawang tauhan ng tindahan, at sa nakuhang CCTV footages, natunton ang magka-live in sa Sta. Rosa Laguna.

Sa koordinasyon ng Cavite police sa tanggapan ni Col. Fonte, narekober kina Camerino at Urbano ang isang caliber 9mm pistol, cellphones, canned goods, at cash na nagkakahalagang P54,680.00, at iba pang grocery items.

Sa pag-iimbestiga ng mga pulis, lumabas na ang tatlong suspek ay may kinalaman din sa mga naganap na holdap sa mga sangay ng Alfamart sa Silang, Molino, at Bacoor City nitong nakaraang Hulyo 11 kung saan kinulimbat nila sa kaha ang halagang P92,000.

Nakakulong na ngayon sa GMA police municipal station ang mga suspek.

FDA: Humihingi ng approval ang ASF vaccine maker para sa product certification

Ipahayag ng Food and Drug Administration (FDA) noong Biyernes ng umaga na kasalukuyan silang kumikilos para sa pagsang-ayon ng isang bakuna laban sa African Swine Fever (ASF).

Ayon sa FDA, isang kumpanya ang nagpasa ng application para sa sertipikasyon ng pagpaparehistro (CPR) kahit pa ang nasabing bakuna ay nasa ikalawang yugto pa rin ng clinical trial.

“Hinihintay lang po namin ‘yong resulta ng kanilang clinical trial and we already gave them a positive nod for their phase 2 clinical trial. Pero ang gumagawa po ng clinical trial ay di naman po ang FDA, ‘yong Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI),” pahayag ni FDA Director-General Samuel Zacate.

“Abangan po namin na ma-submit nila ‘yong mga necessary findings nila para po ma-evaluate natin kasi kami po ang nag-i-issue ng CPR,” dagdag pa niya.

Napuna rin ng FDA na dapat nasa ikatlong yugto na ng clinical trial ang isang produkto upang aprubahan para sa CPR.

Noong Hunyo, humingi ng pahintulot ang Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) mula sa FDA para sa pagpapalabas ng AVAC, isang bakunang mula Vietnam laban sa ASF na isang simpleng turok lang ang kailangan para sa mga biik na may edad na apat hanggang sampung linggo.

Nitong Hulyo, sinabi ni Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr., na siya ring ay kalihim ng Department of Agriculture na ang unang yugto ng safety and efficacy trials ng ASF vaccine ay may 80% na rate ng bisa. Binanggit rin niya na ang ASF at bird flu pa rin ang pinakamalaking banta sa mga hayup na dapat tugunan ng pamahalaan.

Ayon sa DA, may aktibong kaso ng ASF sa 16 probinsya hanggang Hunyo 29.

Annual Hemingway Look-Alike Contest begins in Florida Keys

KEY WEST, Fla. Almost 140 bearded men who resemble Ernest Hemingway converged on Key West, the late author’s home during the 1930s, to compete in the Hemingway Look-Alike Contest that began Thursday evening.

The challenge is a highlight of the island’s Hemingway Days festival that salutes the literary talent and adventurous life of the Nobel Prize-winning writer.

During his Key West years, Hemingway penned classics including “For Whom the Bell Tolls” and “To Have and Have Not.”

The three-night look-alike competition is held at Sloppy Joe’s Bar, where Hemingway often spent time with local and literary friends.

Closely observed by a judging panel of previous winners including 2022’s Jon Auvil, of Dade City, Florida, contestants take turns pontificating and parading across Sloppy Joe’s stage.

Many are repeat contenders who bring their own cheering sections, and most attempt to copy the “Papa” persona and appearance adopted by Hemingway in his later years.

The contest’s second preliminary round is set for Friday, the 124th anniversary of Hemingway’s July 21 birth, and the 2023 winner is set to be chosen Saturday night.

Hemingway Days continues through Sunday with events including a quirky “Running of the Bulls” spoof, a street fair and the Key West Marlin Tournament that recalls the author’s passion for Florida Keys fishing.

The exhibit featured an impressive display of specialized equipment and strategies employed by the San Pablo City DRRMO to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents during times of crisis. Among the highlights were demonstrations of the Water Search and Rescue team, renowned for its swift and effective response to water-related emergencies. 

Another focal point of the exhibit was the High Angle Rope Rescue team, which demonstrated its expertise in handling challenging vertical and high-altitude rescue scenarios. The 50-man team’s advanced equipment and unwavering commitment to excellence underscore the city’s dedication to maintaining a competent and well-prepared disaster response unit.

Throughout the event, a wide array of CDRRMO tools and equipment were showcased, emphasizing San Pablo City’s comprehensive approach to disaster preparedness. Advanced communication systems, emergency medical response gear, and innovative early warning mechanisms were displayed, reflecting the city’s commitment to staying at the forefront of disaster management practices.

LUCENA CITY, Quezon. Patay ang isang negosyante matapos barilin ng hindi kilalang salarin habang nakaupo sa loob ng kanyang pickup truck na nakaparada sa kalye sa Ferenzy Subdivision, Brgy. Isabang, dito, kahapon ng umaga.

Kinilala ni Col. Ledon Monte, direktor ng pulisya sa Quezon, ang biktima na si Isaac Baquirel Cristota, 56 anyos na residente ng Ferenzy Subdivision, Brgy. Isabang, Lucena City, Quezon.

Ayon kay Monte, bandang 5:30 ng umaga, paalis na sana si Cristota at nakaupo sa driver’s seat ng kanyang Ford Raptor nang biglang lumitaw ang hindi kilalang gunman at walang ano anong pinagbabaril ang biktima ng malapitan.

Pagkatapos ng mamaril naglakad lang palayo ang salarin habang dali-daling dinala ang biktima sa Unihealth Hospital sa Tayabas City, Quezon ngunit idineklara itong dead-on-arrival dahil sa mga tama ng hindi pa alam na bala ng baril sa ulo at iba’t ibang bahagi ng katawan.

Ayon pa kay Monte, may inisyal na teyorya ang pulisya na ang motibo sa pagpatay sa biktima ay may kinalaman sa negosyong “oil products.”

“One or two suspects could be behind the plot. The victim was a businessman engaged in oil products. We are investigating and checking information about their family business,” dagdag pa ni Monte.

Inatasan na rin ni PLt. Col. Ruben Ballera Jr., hepe ng pulisya sa Lucena City Police Station, na subukang matukoy at mahuli ang suspek sa pamamagitan ng pag-review sa posibleng CCTV footage na nasa mga paligid ng subdibisyon upang makuha ang anumang impormasyon tungkol sa mga suspek sa pagpatay.

NEW YORK. Tony Bennett, the masterful stylist of American musical standards, passed away at the age of 96, just two weeks shy of his birthday.

The legendary singer, known for his devotion to classic American songs and his ability to create new standards like “I Left My Heart In San Francisco,” enjoyed a career spanning decades, garnering admiration from fellow artists like Frank Sinatra to Lady Gaga.

His publicist, Sylvia Weiner, confirmed the news of his death to The Associated Press, stating that he died in his hometown of New York. While no specific cause was mentioned, it was known that Bennett had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2016.

Bennett was regarded as one of the last great saloon singers of the mid-20th century, and he often expressed that his ambition was to create a hit catalog rather than just hit records. Throughout his career, he released more than 70 albums, earning him 19 competitive Grammy Awards, most of which were achieved after he turned 60. His exceptional voice and interpretation of songs endeared him to fans and peers alike.

Unlike his friend and mentor, Frank Sinatra, Bennett chose to interpret songs rather than embody them. His music selections ranged from the Gershwins and Cole Porter to Irving Berlin and Jerome Kern, and he had a unique ability to caress a ballad or brighten up-tempo numbers.

Bennett’s ability to endure and reinvent himself allowed him to gain new fans and collaborate with younger artists, some young enough to be his grandchildren. Throughout his career, Bennett tirelessly championed the Great American Songbook, believing that the songs of composers like Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, and Jerome Kern would never fade away.

One of Bennett’s most famous contributions came from two unknown songwriters, George Cory and Douglass Cross, who provided him with his signature song, “I Left My Heart In San Francisco,” during a career lull in the early 1960s. The song became a massive hit, earning Bennett his first two Grammy Awards.

In addition to his musical accomplishments, Bennett actively supported the Civil Rights Movement, and he joined Martin Luther King Jr.’s 1965 Selma-to-Montgomery voting rights march and performed for the protesters.

Naging isang Tropical Depression na pinangalanang Egay ang low pressure area na binabantayan ng state weather bureau sa silangan ng Timog-Silangang Luzon.

Ang bagyong Egay, na nananatiling malakas hanggang Biyernes ng hapon, ay ang ikalimang tropical cyclone na tumama sa Pilipinas sa taong 2023 at ang pangalawa sa buwan ng Hulyo.

Ayon sa Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services (PAGASA), maaring maging isang super typhoon ang TD Egay sa Lunes, ika-24 ng Hulyo.

Sa araw ding ito, nakatakda namang magbigay ng kanyang ikalawang State of the Nation Address (SONA) si Pangulong Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

Ang super typhoon ay isang malakas na bagyo na may hangin na umaabot sa hindi bababa sa 240 kph at maaaring magdulot ng pinsala sa mga coastal towns at mga gusali.

Sa Biyernes ng hapon, ayon sa PAGASA, ang sentro ng Egay ay huling natunton 835 kilometro silangan ng Timog-Silangang Luzon.

California Science Center starts complex process to display Space Shuttle Endeavour vertically

LOS ANGELES. A highly technical process began Thursday in Los Angeles to put NASA’s retired Space Shuttle Endeavour on permanent display in the vertical launch position complete with external tank and two solid rocket boosters.

Workers used a crane to hoist the bottom segments of the boosters into the California Science Center’s future Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center, which is currently under construction in Exposition Park.

The segments, called aft skirts, had to be precisely positioned so that the entire assembly can be stacked properly. Officials say it will be the first time the procedure has been done outside of a NASA facility.

The 20-story-tall display will stand atop an 1,800-ton (1,633-metric ton) concrete slab supported by six so-called base isolators to protect Endeavour from earthquakes.

Endeavour was built as a replacement for the destroyed Space Shuttle Challenger and flew 25 missions between 1992 and 2011.

When NASA’s shuttles were retired, Endeavour was flown to California atop NASA’s special Boeing 747 shuttle carrier in 2012, drawing crowds as it flew over locations in the state associated with the space program.

After landing at Los Angeles International Airport, the shuttle was placed on a special trailer and then created a sensation as it was inched through tight city streets to the California Science Center over several days.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the Air and Space Center was held last year on the 11th anniversary of Endeavour’s final return from space.

Dec. 31 will be the last chance to see Endeavour as it has been displayed — horizontally in the landing position — for years since arrival at the California Science Center.

The shuttle will be moved across Exposition Park and lifted by a crane to be intricately mated to the external tank. Construction of the Air and Space Center will be completed around the full shuttle stack.

The center’s foundation has raised nearly $350 million of the $400 million goal for the project.
