Moonbin: K-pop star dies at age of 25

K-pop star Moonbin has died at the age of 25, his record label has announced.

South Korean media quoted police saying he was found unresponsive by his manager at his apartment in Seoul on Wednesday night.

Police said they believed he had “made an extreme decision” and they were investigating the cause of death. There were no signs of foul play.

His label Fantiago issued a statement saying Moonbin “unexpectedly left our world and became a star in the sky”.

Moonbin had been an actor and model before joining the boy band Astro in 2016, a well-established K-pop group.

He also performed with a sub-group called Moonbin & Sanha.

The statement from Fantagio asked that everyone “refrain from speculative and malicious reports” so that his family could pay their respects in peace.

Moonbin joined the Fantagio’s trainee program as a child before eventually joining Astro. The group was originally six performers, but one member left in February 2023.

His sister Moon Sua is also a K-pop singer, performing as part of the girl group Billlie. (BBC)

PBBM: Walang magaganap na krisis sa bigas

0

“No. I don’t. There is a chance na ninipis talaga ‘yung supply because nga noong magkasabay-sabay ‘yan,” ayon kay Marcos.

“So we are watching and waiting to see what the production levels are going to be after the last planting season before the harvest, for the upcoming harvest and what will be…” dagdag pa niya.

It’s precisely as you mentioned. It is in the dry part where we are waiting for the last planting to be harvested,” ang pagtitiyak ni Marcos.

Rare solar eclipse to cross remote Australia, Indonesia

0

A rare solar eclipse will cross over remote parts of Australia, Indonesia and East Timor on Thursday.

The lucky few in the path of the hybrid solar eclipse will either get plunged into the darkness of a total eclipse or they’ll see a “ring of fire” as the sun peeks out from behind the moon.

The eclipse path will swoop from the Indian Ocean to the Pacific Ocean, mostly over water. For those viewing the total eclipse, it will last a little over a minute.

Such celestial events happen about once every decade: The last one was in 2013 and the next one isn’t until 2031. They occur when Earth is in the “sweet spot” so the moon and the sun are almost the exact same size in the sky, said NASA solar expert Michael Kirk.

At some points, the moon is a little closer and blocks out the sun in a total eclipse. But when the moon is a little farther away, it lets some of the sun’s light peek out in an annular eclipse.

“It’s a crazy phenomenon,” Kirk said. “You’re actually watching the moon get larger in the sky.”

Those outside the eclipse path can still watch from a distance: Some sites in Australia will stream the event online, including the Perth Observatory and the Gravity Discovery Centre and Observatory.

Littlest intruder: Toddler crawls through White House fence

Washington. A curious toddler on Tuesday earned the title of one of the tiniest White House intruders after he squeezed through the metal fencing on the north side of the executive mansion.

U.S. Secret Service Uniformed Division officers, who are responsible for security at the White House, walked across the North Lawn to retrieve the tot and reunite him with his parents on Pennsylvania Avenue. Access to the complex was briefly restricted while officers conducted the reunification. Officers briefly questioned the parents before allowing them to continue on their way.

Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said officers “encountered a curious young visitor along the White House north fence line who briefly entered White House grounds.”

“The White House security systems instantly triggered Secret Service officers and the toddler and parents were quickly reunited,” he said in a statement.

It may be the first successful intrusion onto the complex since the White House fence was doubled in height to roughly 13 feet (3.96-meters) in recent years after a series of security breaches. While taller, the new fence has an additional inch of space between pickets, for a total of 5½ inches (12.7 centimeters) between posts. (AP)

Older children have sometimes become stuck in the iconic barrier, which has also been the scene of demonstrations, with protesters chaining themselves to the fence.

Sa kabila ng apela ng PTEs, sinabi ng DICT na “at this point, there is no extension of SIM registration.”

“The DICT reiterates that the SIM Registration Act places primacy on the fundamental rights of Filipinos and is replete with safeguards to ensure the confidentiality and security of user data,” ayon sa DICT.

“The DICT is one with PTEs in ensuring that Filipinos can enjoy safe and secure mobile phone services through the holistic implementation of the SIM Registration Act,” dagdag nito.

Ambassador’s mouth representing Beijing’s character?

0

Was Chinese ambassador to the Philippines Huang Xilian just expressing his “concern” about overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Taiwan in his speech a few days ago? He said: “Some tried to find excuse for the new EDCA sites by citing the safety of the 150,000 OFWs in Taiwan, while China is the last country that wishes to see conflict over the Strait because people on both sides are Chinese. But we will not renounce the use of force, and we reserve the option of taking all necessary measures. This is to guard against external interference and all separatist activities. The Philippines is advised to unequivocally oppose ‘Taiwan independence’ rather than stoking the fire by offering the US access to the military bases near the Taiwan Strait if you care genuinely about the 150,000 OFWs.”

The ambassador’s mouth is the cause of concern.

What is the role of Huang’s emotion against the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement? This question will lead us to be concerned about his words, which many viewed as a threat to the Taiwan-based OFWs.

Why – oh why – tell us not to interfere in the issue of Taiwan? Uncontrolled speeches such as his only convey heat. Who is he to order or lecture us not to interfere in Taiwan’s domestic issues like this? Manila is not doing anything or interfering in what is happening there.

He should have exchanged notes with diplomats so that we would know that the main reason Balikatan exists is for defense capability, modernization of equipment, assets, and development of the country’s infrastructure. He should not have thought that Balikatan was being held for the Taiwan issue.

Leaders of the country should speak more to further refute Huang’s illogical speech and/or better say that the ambassador does not think about what comes out of his mouth. He needs to be informed that the Philippines has no time to interfere in their problem, although Malacanang Palace has chosen to wait for further interpretation of Huang’s speech.

President Marcos leads us in that willingness to wait for that. He said: “I’ll be talking to the ambassador soon and I’m sure he will be very anxious to give his own interpretation of what he was trying to say… We were all a little surprised, but I just put it down to difference in language.”

If Huang does not stop, he may follow the advice of Senator Risa Hontiveros to send himself home to China and ask to be replaced by another ambassador who does not speak hastily, or undiplomatically.

In the same speech, Huang looked “forward to in-depth discussions and insights on issues regarding the South China Sea and regional peace and security.” Obviously, he did not listen to the Department of National Defense and the National Security Council’s clarifications that the enhancement of the country’s defense ties with the United States will be for the Philippines and the country will not allow other nations to drag Manila into their mess. Meanwhile, the Department of Foreign Affairs said contingencies are already in place for OFWs in Taiwan.

Again, obviously, Beijing is good at bullying.

The saga of great writer and poet

(6th of a series)

In 1999, Nelia had a serious attack of  asthma  that ultimately led to her death.  Palasig confessed to me later that he cried a river when he lost her.  Alone with his kids and confused, he dedicated most of his time assisting people who needed help from the local government.  During that time, you would see him walking to and fro from one office to another carrying documents for signature. He was always busy as a bee and even if he was telling jokes, you can see the sadness in his eyes.

Sometime in April of 2000, during the seminar-workshop sponsored by San Miguel Corporation for local media practitioners, Palasig was formally introduced to me by Ruben E. Taningco – a licensed Geodetic Engineer working with the local government. Instead of a handshake, he simply vowed his head slightly as a sign of respect. Later during lunch, he offered me his food which I graciously declined because I already had mine.

After a barrage of exchanging pleasantries among the participants, my Publisher Dinah M. Carabio invited him to write in our paper, Laguna Courier, the Voice of the People to which he immediately said yes.  At first, there was only one column – the TKO (Talinhaga, Kwento at Opinyon) but due to insistent demand from his followers, another column was allowed to him – the ‘Biro Lang Po ni Palasig” – a little green and titillating but everybody’s favorite.  He also wrote for other local papers upon request like Wednesday Herald and Monday Mail.

Still craving for an outlet of all his ideas that were hampered by time and family obligations in the past, he created another column for Laguna Courier which he titled “TIKBALANG HOROSCOPE” – a kind of funny horoscope using signs totally different from the zodiac signs we are accustomed to. Because of this column, our paper sold like hotcakes especially among jeepney and tricycle drivers parked in front of San Pablo City public market, the City Mall. SPLGU and court employees were talking about it not because they believed in what was written about them but because the predictions made them laugh.

Palasig used his funny horoscope as a tool to convey sensitive messages to people who cannot accept open criticisms at the same time utilizing his poetic prophecies and flowery words to patch up unresolved differences between allies. That’s the beauty of being a writer!  You can be what you wanna be without much fuss. I know because I’m a writer.

TIKBALANG rose to fame for a while and its membership ballooned in a short span of time because everybody wanted to be a member.  Strangers and some ‘enterprising’ politicos entered into the picture each with their own personal agenda trying to outsmart the original members.  Some wanted this, others wanted that and so the saying “too many cooks spoil the broth” happened – the young and still fragile organization collapsed like a sandcastle.

DOH: Mag-ingat sa sore eyes

0
