JERUSALEM. The Israeli military has successfully rescued Qaid Farhan Alkadi, a 52-year-old member of Israel’s Arab Bedouin minority, in a daring and complex operation in the southern Gaza Strip. The operation carried out over 10 months after his abduction by Hamas-led gunmen on October 7, 2023, marks a significant achievement for Israel’s defense forces.
Alkadi, who was working as a guard at a packing factory in Kibbutz Magen when he was taken hostage, was safely transferred to a hospital where his medical condition is reported to be stable. The military described the rescue as “a complex operation in the southern Gaza Strip,” but did not provide further details.
Alkadi, a father of 11 children with two wives, was one of many civilians targeted during the October 7 attacks on several farming communities around the Gaza Strip. His rescue follows the successful recovery of four other Israeli hostages in June and is part of Israel’s ongoing efforts to secure the release of over 100 hostages still held by Hamas.
“We are doing everything to save the hostages,” stated Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi, head of the Israeli military. The operation underscores Israel’s relentless commitment to bringing its citizens home safely, despite the immense challenges posed by the conflict.
Footage from Israeli television stations showed a military helicopter landing at a hospital, where medical staff were on standby to receive Alkadi. His rescue has been widely seen as a significant victory for Israel, emphasizing the ongoing tensions and the complexity of the situation in Gaza.
As ceasefire talks continue, the rescue of Alkadi offers a glimmer of hope but also highlights the uncertain fate of the remaining hostages. Negotiations for their release, as well as broader efforts to halt the fighting, remain fraught with challenges as both sides navigate the intricate terms of potential agreements.
