PARIS. Rafael Nadal made a poignant return to Roland Garros on Monday, grappling with uncertainties surrounding his fitness and form ahead of the French Open, an event he has dominated with a record 14 titles.
Accompanied by his coach, Carlos Moya, and a few practice partners, the 37-year-old Spaniard stepped onto Court Philippe Chatrier amidst the buzz of anticipation. A crowd of approximately 6,000 fans, eager to witness the return of the clay court maestro, erupted in cheers as Nadal commenced his practice session.
After an intense hour and a half on the court, Nadal graciously indulged the fervent supporters, signing autographs before disappearing into the labyrinthine corridors leading to the locker rooms.
For Nadal, the practice session served as a crucial litmus test, allowing him to reacquaint himself with the iconic red clay of Roland Garros, where he hasn’t competed in two years, and assess his physical readiness for the upcoming tournament.
With the French Open set to commence on Sunday, Nadal’s participation hangs in the balance. Still in the throes of recuperation from a series of injuries, including a hip injury necessitating surgery in 2023, Nadal’s recent form has been marred by setbacks, casting doubt on his readiness to compete at the highest level.
Reflecting on his performance at the Italian Open, where he suffered a defeat against Hubert Hurkacz, Nadal expressed uncertainty about his preparedness for Roland Garros. “Let’s see what’s going on, how I feel myself mentally tomorrow, after tomorrow, and in one week,” Nadal remarked in Rome. “If I feel ready, I (am) going to try to be there and fight for the things that I have been fighting (for for) the last 15 years, (even) if now (that) seems impossible.”
As of Monday, Nadal had yet to make a definitive announcement regarding his participation in Paris, adding a layer of suspense to what could potentially be his final appearance at a tournament he has long dominated. With 14 French Open titles under his belt, Nadal’s legacy at Roland Garros remains unmatched, underscoring the significance of his potential presence in this year’s competition.
