Pinangunahan ni Pope Francis ang pagpupugay sa kanyang hinalinhan noong Sabado, matapos mamatay si Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI sa isang monasteryo sa Vatican sa edad na 95.
“We are moved as we recall him as such a noble person, so kind and we feel such gratitude in our hearts, gratitude to god for giving him to the church, and to the world,” ayon kay Pope Francis sa Saint Peter’s Basilica habang pinangungunahan ang traditional vespers ceremony bago mag Bagong Taon.
Si Benedict, na siyang unang pontiff sa halos 600 taon na nagbitiw sa kanyang posisyon, sa halip na humawak sa pwesto habang buhay pa, ay namatay noong Sabado, ayon sa isang pahayag mula sa Vatican.
“Gratitude to him for all the good he accomplished and above all for his witness of faith and prayer, especially in these last years of his life. Only God knows the value of his sacrifices for the good of the church,” dagdag ni Pope Francis.
“With sorrow I inform you that the Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI, passed away today at 9:34 in the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery in the Vatican,” the Director of the Press Office of the Holy See, ayon kay Matteo Bruni.
Ang libing ni Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI ay gaganapin sa Huwebes sa St. Peter’s Square sa Vatican City sa ganap na 9:30 a.m. lokal na oras, ayon kay Bruni. Ang libing ay pangungunahan ni Pope Francis.
