Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel has intensified his commitment to launch a military invasion of the southern Gaza city of Rafah, home to approximately 1.4 million Palestinians, the majority of whom have been displaced from other regions within the Gaza Strip.
Without providing further details, Netanyahu asserted in a video statement on Monday, “It will happen. There is a date.”
Despite Israel’s staunch ally, the United States, cautioning against a ground operation into Rafah and insisting on a credible plan to safeguard civilians, Netanyahu remains resolute in his stance. The statement comes amidst ongoing negotiations in Cairo between Israeli representatives and international mediators, aiming to broker a ceasefire agreement with the Palestinian militant organization, Hamas.
Following the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Khan Younis, another southern Gaza city, on Sunday, defense officials have indicated preparations for a forthcoming incursion into Rafah.
Palestinians who ventured into Khan Younis on Monday described the city as uninhabitable, leaving them with limited prospects of immediate return. Many displaced individuals have sought refuge in Rafah, bracing for potential escalations in the conflict.
