Filipino music legend Freddie Aguilar has passed away at the age of 72, as confirmed by Atty. George Briones, general counsel of Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP), on Tuesday. Aguilar, a prominent figure in Original Pilipino Music (OPM), once served as the national executive vice president of the PFP.
His wife, Jovie Aguilar, had been sharing updates online in recent days, including a message of gratitude from the Philippine Heart Center. “Nakakatouch yung mga kinukumusta rin ako sa gitna ng kalagayan ni Freddie. Hindi ko kayo maisa-isa replayan pero wag kayo mag alala ok lang ako, always finding courage in the face of fear,” she wrote in a Facebook post.
She also asked for understanding regarding the lack of detailed updates, saying, “Ang priority natin ngayon ay ang kalagayan ni Freddie, pasensya na kayo na wala akong mabigay na detailed info sa inyo kasi pang-pamilya at malalapit na kaibigan lang muna ito.”
Freddie Aguilar is survived by Jovie and his four children from a previous marriage: Maegan, Jonan, Isabella, and Jeriko.
Widely regarded as one of the pillars of Filipino music, Aguilar rose to fame with the song “Anak,” a heartfelt ballad that resonated with audiences around the world. The song was translated into 51 languages and became a global sensation.
His other notable hits include “Anak,” “Bulag, Pipi at Bingi,” “Magdalena,” and many more songs that reflected his deep social consciousness and passion for Filipino identity.
Freddie Aguilar’s passing marks the end of an era in Philippine music, but his contributions to the country’s cultural landscape will continue to live on through his songs and the generations he inspired.
