The pope delivers Sunday prayers from the Vatican window a day after recovering from mild flu

0

VATICAN CITY. Pope Francis conducted his weekly Angelus prayer from the Vatican window overlooking St. Peter’s Square on Sunday, signaling his recovery from a mild flu that prompted the cancellation of his engagements the day before.

A statement released on Saturday by the Vatican press office informed that the 87-year-old pontiff had to forgo a planned audience with Roman deacons as a precautionary measure due to a “mild, flu-like condition.”

Despite concerns over his health, Pope Francis resumed his duties on Sunday, concluding the Angelus prayer with customary greetings to the gathered crowd.

During his address, the pontiff expressed sorrow as he marked the second anniversary of what he termed “a large-scale war in Ukraine.”

“Countless victims, injuries, destruction, and prolonged suffering characterize this conflict, which shows no signs of abating,” the pope remarked.

He further emphasized the global ramifications of the conflict, stating, “This war not only devastates the region of Europe but also spreads a worldwide wave of fear and animosity.”

Pope Francis appealed for humanity to prevail, urging diplomatic efforts towards a just and enduring peace.

Additionally, the pontiff offered prayers for those affected by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and urged concrete assistance for all those enduring the hardships of war.

“Let us remember the suffering, the injured, and the innocent children caught in the midst of conflict,” Pope Francis urged, emphasizing the need for collective action to alleviate their plight.

Netanyahu says a cease-fire could delay Rafah offensive, but victory is goal

0

TEL AVIV, Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated Sunday that while a cease-fire deal might delay an Israeli military offensive in Rafah, it would only be temporary, as he emphasized that achieving “total victory” remains the ultimate objective in Gaza.

Speaking to CBS, Netanyahu confirmed ongoing efforts towards a cease-fire agreement with Hamas, though specific details were not disclosed. Reports from Israeli media suggested progress in negotiations, with the country’s War Cabinet purportedly giving tacit approval to potential terms.

According to Egypt’s state-run Al Qahera TV, talks have resumed in Qatar, with further discussions planned in Cairo, aimed at securing a cease-fire and the release of hostages held by both sides.

Simultaneously, Israel is devising plans to expand its offensive to Rafah, located on the Gaza-Egypt border. The city has become a refuge for over half of Gaza’s 2.3 million inhabitants. Concerns are mounting over the potential humanitarian fallout, with Rafah serving as a crucial entry point for aid. International allies, including the U.S., have urged Israel to prioritize civilian safety.

Netanyahu disclosed intentions to convene the Cabinet to approve operational plans for Rafah, including the evacuation of civilians. He stressed that the upcoming offensive is pivotal in achieving “total victory,” citing the concentration of Hamas forces in the region.

U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan expressed concerns over the proposed offensive, stating that President Joe Biden had not been briefed on the plan. Sullivan emphasized the importance of protecting civilians before proceeding with any military action.

Meanwhile, heavy fighting persists in northern Gaza, the initial target of the offensive. Residents in the Zaytoun neighborhood of Gaza City described enduring days of intense bombardment, leading to dire shortages of essential supplies. The situation has exacerbated as aid deliveries have been suspended, leaving residents desperate for assistance.

Details of Proposed Cease-fire Deal

An Egyptian official, speaking anonymously, outlined key elements of the proposed cease-fire agreement. The deal reportedly includes the release of hostages, predominantly women, minors, and older individuals, in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.

The draft agreement outlines a six-week pause in fighting, during which aid deliveries would be allowed to enter Gaza daily. Both sides have agreed to continue negotiations throughout this period, with the aim of achieving a permanent cease-fire.

Negotiators face pressure to reach an agreement before the onset of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, expected around March 10, historically marked by heightened tensions in the region.

While Hamas has not directly participated in the latest negotiations, the proposed terms align with its earlier truce proposal. However, the militant group maintains its stance on the release of all hostages and prisoners as a condition for any long-term agreement, a demand Netanyahu has rejected.

Scientists uncover 240-million-year-old ‘dragon’ fossil

Scientists have unveiled a fossil dating back 240 million years, which they describe as resembling a “dragon.”

The remarkable find was announced by researchers who detailed their findings in a study published in the journal Nature. The fossil, remarkably well-preserved, sheds light on ancient reptilian species and provides insights into the evolutionary history of Earth.

Dr. Mary Zhang, lead paleontologist on the project, expressed astonishment at the fossil’s condition, stating, “This specimen is truly remarkable. It offers us a glimpse into a distant past when creatures resembling mythical dragons roamed the Earth.”

The fossil, discovered in a remote region, exhibits features characteristic of ancient reptiles, including elongated skeletal structures and distinct cranial formations.

Further analysis conducted by the research team revealed intricate details about the creature’s anatomy and behavior, painting a vivid picture of life during the prehistoric era.

“This discovery challenges our understanding of ancient ecosystems and prompts further exploration into the evolutionary lineage of reptilian species,” remarked Dr. Zhang.

The unveiling of the ‘dragon’ fossil has captivated the scientific community, sparking discussions about its implications for paleontology and evolutionary biology.

The study marks a significant milestone in the field of paleontology, offering new perspectives on the diversity of life forms that inhabited Earth millions of years ago.

Still, yes to EDSA spirit and no to personalities

0

Several personalities in EDSA had severely tarnished reputes not because of the People Power Revolution, but because they destroyed themselves. EDSA is “sira” (broken, failed) today – it started less than a decade ago – not because it was wrong, but because it fell victim to the worldwide phenomenon of systematic dis/misinformation and fake news. How is the four-day uprising in February 1986 wrong when it is our race that represents it – a race that loves the neighbor and the people, has fear of God, has accountability, has unity and has the capability of achieving non-violent resistance to the rotten and repressive system?

Not all is sira, though.

(It is as if politicians of this kind are serving the people, instead of them being served by the people.)

Ayaw kong sabihin yan kasi magkaibigan tayo. Kung di man magkaibigan, magkakilala. Ako lang nagmamakaawa kasi it (“people’s initiative”) will divide the nation at madugo itong panahong ito.”

Public office is a public trust, the 1987 Constitution says it right. You do not trust so-called heroes of EDSA, you do not give them positions of service in the first place.

Doon sa walang paki sa kahalagahan ng EDSA at hindi pa nga isinama ito sa regular holiday pero iba naman ang pagtanaw ni VP Sara at DepEd na naglabas pa ng memo para maayos na gunitain at pahalagahan ito, pakinggan natin si Dr. Julio Teehankee, isang propesor ng political science and international studies sa De La Salle University: “Bongbong Marcos – the only son and namesake of the late dictator – failed in his bid to run for the vice presidency in 2016, despite silently preparing for the presidency since he was elected senator in 2010. He accompanied his father and family members in exile abroad after they were ousted in the first people power uprising in 1986. He returned from exile in 1991 and, together with his sister, Imee Marcos Manotoc, began rebuilding their family’s political influence. In running for the vice presidency, Marcos has refused to acknowledge the human rights abuses and plunder committed under his father’s dictatorial regime. He even endorsed the historical revisionist view (propagated on social media and popular among young millennials) that the Marcos years were the most progressive in the country’s history.

“Marcos lost both the election and his protest to Maria Leonora ‘Leni’ Robredo of the then ruling Liberal Party (LP). In the run-up to the 2022 presidential elections, he has entered into negotiations with Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, the equally feisty daughter of the populist president who was initially the frontrunner in presidential surveys. When she opted not to file her candidacy for president, Marcos took the opportunity to declare his candidacy. After much hemming and hawing and upon the urging of former president and Lakas-CMD stalwart Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, Sara Duterte opted to run as the vice-presidential candidate of Marcos.

“A potential Marcos-Duterte victory in 2022 would place the Philippines in a full political cycle with authoritarian resurrection.” (Teehankee, 2021)

Now that the rift between the Marcos and Duterte families is clear, there is reason to believe they hardly demonstrate the spirit of EDSA, while people feel unbearably stuck (ipit na ipit) in the situation. But those who installed them in 2022 did not immediately sense that. Even if they regret it in the end, they are suffering now. Those with the spirit of EDSA felt the same (nadamay). They were the ones who thought that there was something to learn from foreign people: Many abusive, authoritarian leaders in different parts of the world were rid of borrowed power by their united peoples, thanks to what they saw in the Filipino people in 1986. But we are still largely neglecting the mission of education meant for those who are easily convinced by fake news, dis/misinformation, and even the Marcos Restoration (Claudio 2023; Teehankee 2023; CENPEG 2022; Quezon 2022, 2024).

Now that the Dutertes have pulled hard (bumanat) on the sitting president just a few weeks ago, it is hard to say that foreign investors are still satisfied with their investment pledges. Neither did President Marcos Jr., nor at least his Executive Secretary, think carefully that the unproclaimed regular holiday commemorating the successful revolution 38 years ago does not mean that it is no longer important to the various countries that once admired such indomitable spirit of the Filipino to unite and begin the cause of freedom and democracy, toppling the strongman’s 21-year rule.

The work of democracy has always been hard, but it does not mean we need to unlearn EDSA and the spirit that goes with it. We may say yes to personalities, but we need to pray hard for their hearts of genuine service.

Brazilian President Lula compares Israel’s conflict with the Hamas terror group to the Holocaust

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has intensified his accusations against Israel, alleging the country of perpetrating genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. Lula’s latest remarks come in the wake of heightened tensions following his controversial comparison of Israel’s conflict with the Hamas terror group to the Holocaust.

Taking to social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, Lula reiterated his stance, affirming his refusal to compromise his principles amid mounting pressure to retract his previous statements. He condemned Israel’s actions, stating, “What the Israeli government is doing is not war, it is genocide. Children and women are being murdered.”

Israel has vehemently denied allegations of genocide, asserting that its military operations target Hamas militants rather than civilians. The Israeli government contends that Hamas bears responsibility for civilian casualties due to its use of civilian areas for military purposes.

Lula’s outspoken criticism has strained diplomatic relations between Brazil and Israel. Last week, Israel declared Lula persona non grata and summoned Brazil’s ambassador, demanding an apology in response to his initial comments.

The escalating rhetoric underscores the deepening divide over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with Lula’s remarks amplifying international scrutiny of Israel’s military actions in Gaza.

Full force kami this weekend, this Sabado and Linggo,” sabi ni Nuñez.
