TINGLOY, Batangas. The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) carried out a successful and efficient rescue mission to aid two survivors of the capsized fishing boat, Motorbanca Velocity, in Tingloy, Batangas.

On the midnight of February 15, 2024, BRP Malapascua (MRRV 4403) safely transported the survivors, Wilbert Binay, 45 years old and Mr. Edgar Glen Binay, 42 years old, reuniting them with relatives from Sitio Butong, Barangay Bulacan, Golo, Lubang, Occidental Mindoro, to Batangas International Port, Sta Clara, Batangas City.

Throughout the journey, BRP Malapascua provided essential provisions and accommodation for the survivors. The Coast Guard Medical and Nursing Unit-Southern Tagalog conducted thorough medical evaluations before transferring the survivors to St. Patrick’s Hospital.

Investigations revealed that the Motorbanca Velocity capsized due to engine trouble and rough seas around 4 PM on February 12, 2024, in Tingloy waters. The fishermen promptly contacted their sister, reporting being swept ashore in Barangay Bulacan.

Upon arrival at Tingloy Port this morning, local sub-station personnel offered assistance and initiated an initial investigation. After gathering information, the survivors were properly turned over to their families.

PCG District Southern Tagalog Commander, CG Commodore Geronimo Tuvilla, along with PCG Station Commander in Batangas, CG Captain Jerome Jeciel, and Vice Mayor Mikee Alvarez, personally joined the rendezvous, extending their heartfelt gratitude to all rescuers involved in ensuring the safe transfer of survivors.

In a statement, CG Commodore Tuvilla expressed gratitude to the search and rescue teams involved in the swift and successful response, acknowledging their dedication and professionalism.

US company’s lunar lander rockets toward the moon for a touchdown attempt next week

0

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. Another private U.S. company took a shot at the moon Thursday, launching a month after a rival’s lunar lander missed its mark and came crashing back.

NASA, the main sponsor with experiments on board, is hoping for a successful moon landing next week as it seeks to jumpstart the lunar economy ahead of astronaut missions.

SpaceX’s Falcon rocket blasted off in the middle of the night from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, dispatching Intuitive Machines’ lunar lander on its way to the moon, 230,000 miles (370,000 kilometers) away. The lander resembled a stunning six-pointed star jewel — each point a leg — as it successfully separated from the upper stage and drifted off into the black void with the blue Earth far below.

“If all goes well, a touchdown attempt would occur Feb. 22, after a day in lunar orbit.”

“Only five countries — the U.S., Russia, China, India, and Japan — have scored a lunar landing, and no private business has yet done so. The U.S. has not returned to the moon’s surface since the Apollo program ended more than five decades ago.”

“There have been a lot of sleepless nights getting ready for this,” Intuitive Machines’ co-founder and chief executive Steve Altemus said before the flight.

“The Houston-based company aims to put its 14-foot (4.3-meter) tall, six-legged lander down just 186 miles (300 kilometers) shy of the moon’s south pole, equivalent to landing within Antarctica on Earth. This region — full of treacherous craters and cliffs, yet potentially rich with frozen water — is where NASA plans to land astronauts later this decade. The space agency said its six navigation and tech experiments on the lander can help smooth the way.”

“NASA’s first entry in its commercial lunar delivery service — Astrobotic Technology’s Peregrine lander — stumbled shortly after liftoff in early January. A ruptured fuel tank and massive leak caused the spacecraft to bypass the moon and come tearing back through the atmosphere 10 days after launching, breaking apart and burning up over the Pacific.”

“Others made it to the moon before wrecking.”

“An Israeli nonprofit’s lander crashed in 2019. Last year, a Tokyo company saw its lander smash into the moon followed by Russia’s crash landing.”

“Only the U.S. has sent astronauts to the moon with Apollo 17’s Gene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt closing out the program in December 1972. That was it for U.S. moon landings until Astrobotic’s short-lived try last month.”

“Intuitive Machines nicknamed its lander after Homer’s hero in ‘The Odyssey.'”

“Godspeed, Odysseus. Now let’s go make history,” said Trent Martin, vice president of space systems.

“NASA is paying Intuitive Machines $118 million to get its latest set of experiments to the moon. The company also drummed up its own customers, including Columbia Sportswear, which is testing a metallic jacket fabric as a thermal insulator on the lander, and sculptor Jeff Koons, who is sending up 125 inch-sized moon figurines in a see-through cube.”

“The lander also is carrying Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Eaglecam, which will snap pictures of the lander as they both descend.”

“The spacecraft will cease operations after a week on the surface.”

Israeli forces enter southern Gaza hospital saying hostages were likely held there

0

RAFAH, Gaza Strip. Israeli forces entered the main hospital in southern Gaza on Thursday, following an incident where a patient was killed and six others wounded by Israeli fire within the complex. The Israeli army cited suspicions of hostages being held by Hamas as the reason for the limited operation.

The raid occurred after Israeli forces attempted to evacuate displaced individuals from Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, a focal point of Israel’s recent offensive against Hamas. Tensions in the region have escalated, with Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah exchanging attacks, raising concerns of a wider conflict.

Israeli military spokesperson Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari stated that the operation was precise and limited, emphasizing that medical staff and patients would not be forcibly removed. Israel accuses Hamas of using civilian structures, including hospitals, as shields for its fighters.

Ashraf al-Qidra, a spokesperson for Gaza’s Health Ministry, condemned the incursion, alleging heavy shooting that injured displaced individuals seeking refuge in the hospital. He criticized the military’s directive to relocate patients to an older, inadequately equipped building, highlighting the challenges faced by those unable to evacuate safely.

Meanwhile, Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon continued for a second day, prompted by a previous rocket attack that resulted in casualties on both sides of the border. Tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, a Hamas ally, have intensified, heightening fears of an expanded conflict.

Negotiations for a ceasefire in Gaza have stalled, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterating his commitment to the offensive until Hamas is dismantled and hostages, taken during a previous attack, are returned.

Scenes of Chaos in Hospital

Nasser Hospital has become emblematic of the devastation wrought upon Gaza’s healthcare system amid ongoing conflict. Videos from the aftermath of the recent strike depicted medics navigating through smoke-filled corridors, attending to wounded patients amidst the chaos.

Dr. Khaled Alserr, one of the remaining surgeons at Nasser Hospital, described the escalating situation as dire, with patients already grappling with previous injuries. The ongoing conflict has further strained resources and hampered efforts to provide adequate care.

International humanitarian organizations, including Doctors Without Borders, have decried the predicament faced by those within Nasser Hospital, caught between military operations and the imperative of seeking medical treatment.

1 dead, multiple people injured in shooting near Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory rally in Kansas City

0

Kansas City Police reported one fatality and multiple injuries following a shooting near the Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory rally at Union Station on Wednesday. Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves confirmed the death of one person and stated that at least 10 to 15 others sustained injuries.

Authorities took two armed individuals into custody for further investigation. The Kansas City Police utilized X, formerly Twitter, to announce that officers were evacuating everyone from inside Union Station.

The shooting occurred around 2 p.m. near the Union Station parking garage. Police efforts were focused on reuniting families who became separated during the chaotic incident.

“The celebration was marred by a shooting. This is absolutely a tragedy,” expressed Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas.

Kade Collins, who attended the parade with his father, recounted the harrowing experience to Fox 4 KC. “We heard 10-12 gunshots, but we thought they were fireworks, so we didn’t really panic at first or get too worked up. But then everyone started screaming and took off running,” said Collins. “Once the crowd moved out of the way, I could see three people with gunshot wounds on the ground. I saw one girl with a gunshot wound to her leg. A second woman was also shot and had something tied around her leg to make a tourniquet and her leg was covered in blood.”

Collins witnessed bystanders aiding the wounded, stating, “There was a guy right by her, and he was in a lot worse shape – he was lying flat on his back. There were multiple people around him helping him. All three of these people seemed pretty young. In their 20s to 30s. We were trying to get out of there as fast as we could.”

Collins also recounted his father witnessing the police apprehending a suspect. “When we were walking out, there was someone pointing and saying ‘he’s right there, he’s right there.’ and police ran to the guy the crowd was pointing at and tackled him and put him in handcuffs. Everyone took off running and screaming.”

Bulacan Church bumigay: 1 patay, 52 sugatan

0

SAN JOSE DEL MONTE CITY. Bumagsak ang ikalawanag palapag ng St. Peter the Apostle Church sa Brgy. Tungkong Mangga, San Jose del Monte City sa Bulacan habang ipinagdiriwang ang Day of Ashes kahapon.

IDF airs footage of Hamas leader Sinwar in Gaza tunnel

0

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has aired footage allegedly showing Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar walking through a Gaza tunnel with family members. In the one-minute clip, Sinwar is seen accompanied by what appears to be his wife and children, walking through the tunnel underneath Khan Younis. Despite facing away from the camera, the IDF claims to have identified Sinwar by the size of his ears and using artificial intelligence. The IDF spokesperson, Daniel Hagari, emphasized that the footage reveals Hamas leaders’ focus on self-preservation and material wealth.

The one-minute-long clip, filmed on October 10, features Sinwar in a tunnel underneath the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis, walking behind what appears to be his wife along with three of his children, who are led by Sinwar’s brother Ibrahim, according to the IDF.

Sinwar appears healthy, in one piece, carrying a bag and wearing Adidas flipflops. One of his daughters is seen holding a doll.

The video was taken from Hamas surveillance footage from the tunnels that was recently retrieved by IDF troops operating in the area.

Hagari stated, “Every resident of Gaza [can now] see how Hamas leaders live underground and how they don’t think about anything other than themselves, their families, and their money.” He further declared the IDF’s determination to apprehend Sinwar, stating, “The hunt for Sinwar will not stop until we catch him, dead or alive.”

The IDF also reported the detention of close relatives of senior Hamas military commanders, including Sinwar, and revealed details about the tunnel network’s raid, which allegedly contained living quarters for senior Hamas officials. The IDF claims to have discovered millions of shekels and dollars in cash hidden in safes within the compound where Hamas officials resided during the conflict.

The airing of the footage coincides with ongoing negotiations in Cairo involving Israeli, US, Qatari, and Egyptian officials aimed at reaching an extended truce and hostage deal. However, reports suggest that Sinwar has been “out of contact” for at least 11 days, potentially impacting the progress of negotiations. Despite this, neither side has confirmed the reports regarding Sinwar’s status.

This development follows previous revelations by the IDF, including footage of Muhammed Sinwar, Yahya’s brother and a senior Hamas commander, driving through a major tunnel network near the Erez border crossing. The IDF claims Muhammed Sinwar led the construction of this network, described as the largest-ever Hamas attack tunnel discovered by the military.

Ash Wednesday and Valentine’s Day coincide in 2024

February 14 is a holiday heavyweight this year due to a calendar collision of events.

Yes, it’s Valentine’s Day, the fixed annual celebration of love and friendship, marked by cute couples, eager elementary school students — and critics who deride its commercialization. But it also happens to be Ash Wednesday, the solemn day of fasting and reflection that signals the start of Christianity’s most penitent season.

WHY IS ASH WEDNESDAY ON VALENTINE’S DAY THIS YEAR?

Ash Wednesday is not a fixed date. Its timing is tied to Easter Sunday, and for most Christians, Easter will fall on March 31 this year.

Easter also moves annually, swinging between March 22 and April 25 based on a calendar calculation involving the moon.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops lays it out: “Easter is celebrated on the first Sunday after the Paschal full moon, which is the first full moon occurring either on or after the spring equinox (March 21). … To find the date for Ash Wednesday, we go back six weeks which leads to the First Sunday of Lent and four days before that is Ash Wednesday.”

This year, that happens to be Feb. 14.

WHAT HAPPENS ON ASH WEDNESDAY?

Not all Christians observe Ash Wednesday. For those who do, they typically attend an Ash Wednesday church service, where a priest or other minister draws a cross — or at least what is intended to look like one — of ashes on their forehead. The distribution of ashes underscores human mortality, among other themes.

It’s an obligatory day of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. The abstinence restrictions are continued on Fridays during Lent, which is the period of repentance and penance leading up to Holy Week observances — most significantly their belief in the crucifixion of Jesus and his resurrection from the dead.

WHERE DO THE ASHES COME FROM?

Typically, the ashes are from the palms used on Palm Sunday, which falls a week before Easter, according to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

Ashes can be purchased, but some churches make their own by burning the palms from prior years. For example, several parishes and schools in the Chicago Catholic Archdiocese plan to hold palm burning ceremonies this year.

CAN CATHOLICS CELEBRATE VALENTINE’S DAY ON ASH WEDNESDAY?

In addition to the candy heart and chocolate-fueled secular celebrations, Feb. 14 is also the Feast of St. Valentine. But Ash Wednesday with its fasting and abstinence requirements is far more significant and should be prioritized, said Catholic Bishop Richard Henning of Providence, Rhode Island, in the diocese’s official newspaper. His predecessor shared a similar message in 2018.

“Ash Wednesday is the much higher value and deserves the full measure of our devotion,” he said. “I ask with all respect that we maintain the unique importance of Ash Wednesday. If you would like to wine and dine your Valentine, please do so on the Tuesday before. February 13 is Mardi Gras, ‘Fat Tuesday,’ a perfect day to feast and celebrate!”

WHO WAS ST. VALENTINE?

The history of Valentine’s Day and St. Valentine is a bit murky, but the holiday began as a liturgical feast day for a third-century Christian martyr, according to Lisa Bitel, a history and religion professor at the University of Southern California.

In the Conversation, her article titled, “ The ‘real’ St. Valentine was no patron of love,” explains there may have been more than one St. Valentine executed for their faith in the same time period, but none of them appear to have been romantics. The emphasis on love appears to have come later.
