Davao de Oro landslide death toll rises to 68

0

At least 68 people are now known to have died after a landslide swept through a goldmining village in Davao de Oro almost a week ago.

Officials say there are still 51 people missing following Tuesday’s disaster but rescue workers admit there is little hope of finding any more survivors.

“A three-year-old girl was the last person pulled alive from the mud. Her rescue – after more than 60 hours buried – was described as ‘a miracle’,” said Edward Macapili, a disaster agency official of the Davao de Oro province, at the time, adding that it had given “hope to the rescuers.”

But on Monday, those hopes appeared to have faded.

“It is almost a week after the incident and… we are assuming that no one is alive there,” Mr. Macapili told AFP news agency. “There is already a foul smell in the area now so there’s a need to fast-track the retrieval.”

The landslide struck Tuesday night, destroying 55 homes and engulfing three buses and a jeepney – a type of minibus – waiting to pick up workers from the gold mine. Lea Anora, a unit member of the Management of the Dead and the Missing (MDM), told ABS-CBN News that the death toll so far included 42 residents and 26 mining employees.

More than 30 people were injured.

Landslides are a frequent hazard across much of the country because of the mountainous terrain, heavy rainfall, and widespread deforestation from mining and illegal logging.

Heavy monsoon rains have pounded parts of Mindanao on and off for weeks, causing landslides and flooding that have forced tens of thousands of people into emergency shelters.

The area has also been hit by a series of earthquakes, including on Saturday when rescuers were forced to pause their operations due to a magnitude 5.9 earthquake.

Remington gun factory, nearly 200 years old, set to close

ILION, N.Y. Remington began here two centuries ago and generations of workers have turned out rifles and shotguns at the massive firearms factory in the middle of this blue-collar village in the heart of New York’s Mohawk Valley.

Now residents of Ilion are bracing for Remington’s exit, ending an era that began when Eliphalet Remington forged his first rifle barrel nearby in 1816.

The nation’s oldest gun-maker recently announced plans to shutter the factory in the company’s original home early next month, citing the steep cost of running the historic plant. Remington is consolidating its operations in Georgia, a state the company says is friendlier to the firearms industry.

The company’s recent history has been marked by a lawsuit after the Sandy Hook school massacre and bankruptcy filings that led to new ownership of the Ilion plant, where the workforce has dwindled from about 1,300 workers more than a decade ago to around 300.

But the move still stings for the village of 7,600 people, who face the prospect of a dramatic revenue loss and a vacant, sprawling factory.

“When Remington leaves, it’s not going to be like a facility leaving, it’s going to be like part of your family has moved off,” said Jim Conover, who started at Remington in 1964 packing guns and retired 40 years later as a production manager.

Gun-making dominates and defines Ilion. It’s entwined with the town the way car production is with Detroit.

Mayor John Stephens meets with village board members under a seal portraying Eliphalet Remington holding a long gun. The four-story, brick plant by Armory Street and Remington Avenue looms over the community about 55 miles (90 kilometers) east of Syracuse.

Everyone knows someone who worked at the plant. For some families, jobs there are practically a birthright. Conover’s father and sons also worked at the plant. Furnace operator and technician Frank “Rusty” Brown still clocked in there this year with family members.

“My mom worked there. My dad worked there. My wife works there with me now. My daughter works there with me now. My second daughter works there with me now. And my son-in-law works there,” said Brown, president of the United Mine Workers of America Local 717. “So it’s a double-hit for me and my wife: two of us out of a job.”

The current owners of Remington Firearms, RemArms, blamed “production inefficiencies” for the plant closure in a Nov. 30 letter to union officials. They cited the high cost of maintaining and insuring about 1 million square feet (92,903 square meters) of space in multiple buildings, many dating to World War I.

RemArms added that Georgia offered an environment that better “supports and welcomes the firearms industry.”

CEO Ken D’Arcy also said in a news release that the industry was concerned about the “legislative environment” in New York.

Some believe Remington is primarily shifting to the South to reduce labor and operational costs.

But in a stretch of upstate New York where support for gun rights tends to be strong, some Republican elected officials seized on the company’s comment about Georgia. They linked the plant closure to gun control measures championed by New York City-area Democrats in recent years.

Smith & Wesson opened its new Tennessee headquarters in October after being based in Springfield, Massachusetts, since 1852. In announcing the move in 2021, company officials criticized proposed state legislation they said would prohibit them from manufacturing certain weapons.

RemArms, which bought the firearms business in 2020, did not respond to emails and calls seeking comment.

The company said in its letter to the union it expected to end facility operations around March 4. The company previously announced in 2021 it was moving its headquarters to LaGrange, Georgia, and would open a factory and research operation there.

The days of traffic jams in Ilion every afternoon when day shifts let out are long gone. Empty spaces dominate the factory’s big parking lot. Nearby businesses delivering lunches to the plant, like Franco’s Pizza, already have seen orders dramatically fall.

“They’ve been dwindling down,” Franco’s owner Daniel Mendez said. “This is not necessarily going to put us out of business, but it does hurt.”

With a fraction of its past workforce, Remington leaves Ilion with more of a whimper than a bang.

Stephens believes the remaining workers will be able to find other work in the area. But he also estimates the plant’s loss could cost the village almost $1 million annually, including utility payments and taxes.

Local officials hope the plant site can host a mix of manufacturing, retail and residential units. But its fate remains unclear. It was listed for sale last month for $10 million.

“Things can become an eyesore quickly,” said Michael Disotelle, historian at Ilion’s public library. “And the being in the center of the village like that, you can’t just let it go.”

The present factory site dates to 1828, when Eliphalet Remington located his operations along the recently opened Erie Canal. Though guns historically have been Ilion’s prime product, Remington also made typewriters, sewing machines and other consumer items.

Cerberus Capital Management purchased Remington Arms in 2007, placing it in the same corporate family as Bushmaster Firearms and other gun companies. Bushmaster Firearms moved manufacturing operations to Ilion for a time in 2011.

Remington Outdoor Co. and its subsidiaries filed for bankruptcy protection in 2018, citing slumping sales as well as legal and financial pressure after the Sandy Hook school shooting that killed 20 first graders and six adults. A Bushmaster AR-15-style rifle was used in the massacre.

Family members of victims and a survivor of the shooting who filed a 2015 lawsuit against Remington settled in 2022 for $73 million.

A second bankruptcy filing was made in July 2020. Within months, 545 workers at the Ilion plant were laid off.

The company’s assets were divided at auction. A judge approved Vista Outdoor’s $81.4 million bid for Remington’s ammunition and accessories businesses. The Ilion plant went to a group of investors called the Roundhill Group as part of a $13 million bid.

After months of union negotiations, the firearms plant reopened in the spring of 2021. If RemArms sticks to its March closure timetable, the restart in Ilion will have lasted just under three years.

The mayor said there will be hard decisions ahead, but he’s confident the site will be used again. And while Remington might leave, he said the connection can never be totally severed.

“Even when they are finally 100% no longer involved in the Village of Ilion in any way, shape or form, we’re still going to be known for this,” Stephens said. “You can’t erase history.”

Following the intense game, Swift was visibly emotional as she stood alongside Kelce’s mother, watching him proudly hoist the Lombardi Trophy and exclaim, “Chiefs nation!” The couple then shared a kiss on the field, marking a joyful celebration of the Chiefs’ success.

“A similar bomb threat from the same name of sender who identifies himself as Takahiro Karasawa, allegedly a lawyer, was also made last September and October 2023 and was found out also to be sent in other countries,” ayon kay Tria.

Sa Zambales ay hindi rin nakaligtas sa banta. Siniguro ng mga awtoridad sa Subic ang kaligtasan ng mga estudyante at mga empleyado sa lugar.

“Their primary objective was to ensure the safety and security of the entire community against any potential harm,” ayon sa pahayag ng Subic police.

“The DENR calls for vigilant sobriety and advises everyone to immediately report suspicious activity to local authorities. The Department continues to stay alert and committed to the security and well-being of our employees at all times,” dagdag pa ng ahensya.

Sa kabila ng mga pangyayaring ito, patuloy ang pagbabantay ng mga awtoridad upang masiguro ang kaligtasan ng publiko laban sa anumang potensyal na banta.

Nearly half of world’s migratory species facing decline, UN report says

0

WASHINGTON. A new United Nations report released Monday reveals alarming statistics about the state of migratory species globally, indicating that nearly half of them are facing declines.

The report highlights the precarious situation of many migratory animals such as songbirds, sea turtles, whales, sharks, and others, which rely on moving between different environments with changing seasons. Threats including habitat loss, illegal hunting and fishing, pollution, and climate change are endangering their populations.

Lead author Kelly Malsch, speaking at a U.N. wildlife conference in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, emphasized the importance of migration for these species. She stated, “These are species that move around the globe. They move to feed and breed and also need stopover sites along the way.”

The report, based on existing data including information from the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List, indicates that 44% of migratory species worldwide are experiencing population declines, with over a fifth of them facing the threat of extinction.

Ecologist Stuart Pimm from Duke University, not involved in the report, underscored the critical role of migration for some species, stating, “Migration is essential for some species. If you cut the migration, you’re going to kill the species.”

Participants at the U.N. meeting are discussing proposals for conservation measures and considering whether to formally list several new species of concern. Susan Lieberman, vice president for international policy at the Wildlife Conservation Society, emphasized the need for collaborative efforts, stating, “One country alone cannot save any of these species.”

During the meeting, governments from South America are expected to propose adding two declining Amazon catfish species to the U.N. treaty’s list of migratory species of concern. Lieberman highlighted the importance of protecting the Amazon River basin, stating, “If the Amazon is intact, the catfish will thrive — it’s about protecting the habitat.”

The report comes amid ongoing efforts for conservation, with governments pledging in 2022 to protect 30% of the planet’s land and water resources at the U.N. Biodiversity Conference in Montreal, Canada.

Israeli forces rescue 2 hostages in dramatic raid amid Gaza airstrikes

0

TEL AVIV. Israel has announced the successful rescue of two Israeli-Argentinian hostages in a raid in Rafah, amidst heavy Israeli airstrikes targeting the southern Gazan city. The Israeli military confirmed that the two men, Fernando Simon Marman, 60, and Louis Har, 70, from Kibbutz Nir Yitzhak, were found in “good medical condition”.

Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, a spokesman for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), stated that the hostages were discovered on the second floor of a building in Rafah, following “heavy exchanges of fire at several locations simultaneously, with many terrorists.”

Residents in Rafah described the night of the raid as chaotic, with reports of heavy shooting and strong explosions. Abou Suhhaib, a resident in the Shaboura neighborhood, recounted hearing sounds of “strong explosions, as if hell had opened on the civilians,” and witnessing a helicopter landing amidst heavy gunfire.

Conflicting reports emerged regarding Palestinian casualties from the airstrikes, with AFP news agency citing Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry reporting “around 100 people” killed, while the Associated Press quoted local hospital officials stating at least 50 people were killed.

The rescued hostages were taken to Sheba Medical Center in central Israel for examination. Armon Aek, the acting director of the medical center, confirmed their stable condition and stated that initial examinations were conducted by the emergency room staff.

The hostages had been kidnapped by Hamas during the cross-border attack on October 7th, which triggered the ground invasion. The rescue operation comes after months of escalating violence between Israel and Hamas, resulting in numerous casualties on both sides.

Israel’s military operations in the Gaza Strip have drawn international concern, with several countries and international organizations warning against the planned offensive in Rafah, where an estimated 1.5 million people have sought refuge. UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron highlighted the dire situation, stating that “over half of Gaza’s population are sheltering in the area.”

US President Joe Biden reiterated the importance of protecting civilians in Rafah during a call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, emphasizing the need for a “credible and executable plan” to ensure their safety.

Despite international warnings, Prime Minister Netanyahu has insisted on proceeding with the offensive, citing the need to ensure Israel’s security. Hamas, however, has warned of “tens of thousands” of potential casualties and emphasized that any operation would jeopardize ongoing talks regarding the release of Israeli hostages held in Gaza.

A private jet crashed onto Florida interstate, killing 2

A plane crash on a Florida interstate claimed the lives of two individuals, identified as pilot Edward Daniel Murphy, aged 50, and co-pilot Ian Frederick Hofmann, aged 65, according to law enforcement officials from the Collier County Sheriff’s Office on Saturday.

The crash, which occurred Friday afternoon, also left three individuals injured. The survivors were identified as crew member Sydney Ann Bosmans, aged 23, and passengers Aaron Baker, aged 35, and Audra Green, aged 23, all hailing from Columbus, Ohio. They were transported to a local hospital, although their current conditions remain undisclosed.

In the moments preceding the catastrophe, the pilot calmly communicated with air traffic control, indicating the dire situation. “We’re clear to land, but we’re not gonna make the runway. We’ve lost both engines,” the pilot relayed just before the private jet attempted an emergency landing on Interstate 75.

Witnesses recounted the harrowing scene as the aircraft collided with a vehicle on the highway, with the wing of the plane dragging a car before striking a wall. The impact resulted in a fiery explosion, engulfing the area in flames and billowing black smoke.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has initiated an investigation into the crash site located near Naples, Florida. The flight, which originated from Ohio State University Airport in Columbus, Ohio, was en route to Naples when the tragic incident unfolded.

“We sent fire trucks with special foam to the scene, and three of the five people on board were taken from the wreckage alive,” stated Robin King, spokesperson for the Naples Airport Authority.

Eyewitness Brianna Walker described the terrifying moment when the plane narrowly missed her car before careening onto the highway. “It’s seconds that separated us from the car in front of us,” she recalled. “The wing pulverized this one car.”

The aircraft, operated by Hop-a-Jet Worldwide Charter based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, had been scheduled to return to its base on Friday afternoon, according to FlightAware aircraft tracker. Hop-a-Jet released a statement expressing concern for the well-being of those involved in the accident and announced plans to dispatch a team to the crash site for investigation.

Meanwhile, authorities have clarified that the aircraft is not affiliated with Ohio State University. A spokesperson for the university affirmed they had no further information regarding the incident.

Federal authorities anticipate issuing a preliminary report on the crash’s cause within 30 days, as investigations into the tragic event continue.
