Fake lawyer involved in robbery extortion apprehended by Calabarzon police

CALAMBA CITY, Laguna. The Regional Intelligence Division-Regional Special Operations Unit 4A (RID-RSOU4A), in collaboration with the Biñan City Police Station, orchestrated a successful entrapment operation on February 6, 2024, leading to the apprehension of an individual engaged in robbery extortion and usurpation of authority in Biñan City, Laguna.

The suspect, identified as Datu Phe Piang Mastura, was apprehended following a joint operation at a restaurant located in Adelina 3 Commercial, Brgy Sto Tomas, Biñan City. Investigations revealed that Mastura had falsely portrayed himself as legal counsel for the Campos family, the previous proprietors of a commercial property situated at Adelina Complex, Sto. Tomas, Biñan City.

Under the guise of legal representation, the suspect unlawfully demanded monthly rental payments from numerous tenants, despite lacking the requisite legal credentials. Disturbed by the suspect’s actions, the aggrieved parties, choosing to remain anonymous, sought assistance from RID-RSOU4A and Biñan CPS. Subsequent inquiries disclosed that Mastura was not listed with the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP), prompting authorities to execute an entrapment operation to apprehend him.

Operating under the alias Datu Marcuz A. Mastura, aged 27 and residing at Brgy. 710, Malate, Manila, the suspect also falsely presented himself as the Presidential Assistant on Intelligence Group and Investigation. He managed to extort P700,000.00 pesos from his victims.

During the operation, law enforcement officials recovered incriminating evidence from Mastura, including a Malacañang Palace ID under the name Datu Phe G. Mastura, a Social Welfare identification card named Datu Marcuz A Mastura, counterfeit currency, and a Macbook.

Commending the successful execution of the entrapment operation, Police Regional Office Calabarzon Regional Director PBGen Paul Kenneth T. Lucas praised the collaborative efforts that led to the suspect’s arrest. Director Lucas also urged other victims to come forward and pursue legal action against the apprehended suspect.

Lucas emphasized.

Meanwhile, Mastura was presented to the Biñan City Office of the City Prosecutor on February 07, 2024, for inquest proceedings concerning charges of robbery, extortion, and usurpation of authority. The arrested suspect is presently detained at the Biñan Component City Police Station pending further legal proceedings.

Egypt threatens peace treaty suspension over Israeli incursion into Gaza border town

0

RAFAH, Gaza Strip. Egypt has issued a stern warning, indicating its readiness to suspend its peace treaty with Israel in response to any Israeli military intervention in the densely populated Gaza border town of Rafah. The potential suspension of the Camp David Accords, a foundational agreement for regional stability for nearly fifty years, has emerged as a significant development amid escalating tensions in the region, according to two Egyptian officials and a Western diplomat on Sunday.

The threat from Egypt comes in the wake of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s assertion that deploying troops into Rafah is imperative to secure victory in the ongoing four-month-long conflict against the Palestinian militant organization Hamas.

Rafah, which has become a refuge for over half of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents fleeing violence in other parts of the territory, now faces the specter of further upheaval. The looming threat of a mass exodus, feared by Egypt, could exacerbate an already dire humanitarian crisis. The densely populated town, inundated with makeshift tent camps and United Nations-operated shelters near the border, is ill-equipped to handle a surge of hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians, raising concerns of an irreversible humanitarian catastrophe.

As aid organizations sound alarms over the potential consequences of an offensive in Rafah, emphasizing the catastrophic impact on the already fragile humanitarian situation in Gaza, the stakes are high for both Israel and Egypt. The United Nations has underscored the gravity of the situation, highlighting that approximately 80% of Gaza’s residents have been displaced from their homes, and a quarter of the population is facing starvation.

Meanwhile, Hamas has issued warnings through its Al-Aqsa television station, cautioning that any incursion into Rafah would derail ongoing mediation efforts led by the United States, Egypt, and Qatar aimed at brokering a ceasefire and securing the release of Israeli hostages.

In response to mounting concerns, Netanyahu, speaking on ABC News “This Week with George Stephanopoulos,” suggested the possibility of civilian evacuation from Rafah to northern areas purportedly cleared by the Israeli military. However, such a maneuver would entail logistical challenges and may not adequately address the humanitarian crisis on the ground.

Despite Netanyahu’s assertions, heavy fighting persists in various parts of Gaza, including central areas and the southern city of Khan Younis. A ground operation in Rafah could potentially disrupt vital supply routes, further exacerbating the already dire humanitarian situation.

Alluding to the severity of the situation, European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell condemned the prospect of an Israeli offensive on Rafah, warning of dire consequences for both humanitarian conditions and regional stability.

The escalating tensions underscore the fragility of the peace accords established by the Camp David agreement, which ended decades of hostilities between Egypt and Israel. The agreement, brokered by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter in the late 1970s, has long been regarded as a cornerstone of stability in the region.

Egypt, which shares a border with Gaza, has fortified its frontier with extensive security measures, including a significant buffer zone and fortified barriers. However, concerns persist that a breach in the border could unleash a humanitarian crisis of unprecedented proportions, potentially overwhelming Egyptian authorities’ capacity to respond effectively.

As the standoff between Israel and Egypt intensifies, both sides face critical decisions that could have far-reaching implications for regional security and stability. Amidst mounting international pressure and concerns over the worsening humanitarian situation, the fate of Rafah hangs in the balance, with the potential to reshape the dynamics of the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

Nandiyan ‘yung kalaban mo ang disinformation because of social media.

“(A)ctivism per se, I think it’s still the most important part of my life na hindi ko lang iniisip ang sarili ko. And, you know, and my radar every day until now at age 71 is still about what’s happening in society.

“And that’s I think it’s a gift na I will always cherish na you’re always looking at, you know, doing something good for others. And it aligns with my own foundation as a Christian. Ganu’n. Nu’ng bata pa ako. Because I was brought up as a Baptist by my mom.

Iniimbita raw siya na sumali in one of those youth organizations ng militante. Study history. And, you know, take critical thinking as one of your ano, as one of your foundations or your pursuit.”

The Lunar New Year of the Dragon flames colorful festivities across Asian nations and communities

With fireworks, feasts and red envelopes stuffed with cash for the kids, numerous Asian nations and overseas communities have welcomed Saturday the Lunar New Year.

It begins with the first new moon of the lunar calendar and ends 15 days later on the first full moon. The dates of the holiday vary slightly each year, falling between late January and mid-February as it is based on the cycles of the moon.

Festivities to mark the Year of the Dragon in Taiwan were marked by appearances by newly elected president Lai Ching-te and the speaker of the Legislature, Han Kuo-yu, who represents the opposition Nationalist Party that favors political unification with China.

In his address, Tsai said Taiwan faced a continuing conflict between “freedom and democracy versus authoritarianism” that “not only affects geopolitical stability, but also impacts the restructuring of global supply chains.”

“These past eight years, we have kept our promises and maintained the status quo. We have also shown our determination and strengthened our national defense,” Tsai, who is barred by term limits from seeking a third four-year term, said in reference to the self-governing island democracy’s close economic ties but fraught political relations with China which threatens to invade the island to realize its goal of bringing Taiwan and its high-tech economy under its control.

Taiwan, China and other areas saw highways clogged and flights fully booked as residents traveled home to visit family or took the approximately one-week holiday as an opportunity to vacation abroad.

Firing bottle rockets and other fireworks is a traditional way of welcoming the new year and seeing off any lingering bad memories. Children are given red envelopes stuffed with cash as a show of affection and to help them get a leg-up in the coming months.

Long lines of cars congested South Korean highways on Saturday as millions of people began leaving the densely populated Seoul capital region to visit relatives across the country for the Lunar New Year’s holiday.

Royal palaces and other tourist sites were also packed with visitors wearing the country’s colorful traditional “hanbok” flowing robes. Groups of aging North Korean refugees from the 1950-53 civil war, which remains unresolved, bowed northward during traditional family rituals held in the Southern border town of Paju.

The holiday came amid heightened tensions with North Korea, which has been ramping up its tests of weapons aimed at overwhelming regional missile defenses and issuing provocative threats of nuclear conflict with the South.

The South’s President Yoon Suk Yeol started the holiday by issuing a message of thanks to South Korean soldiers, saying that their services along the “frontline barbwires, sea and sky” were allowing the nation to enjoy the holidays.

Vietnam also celebrated the Lunar New Year, known there as Tet.

Parades and commemorations are also being held in cities with large Asian communities overseas, particularly in New York and San Francisco.

In the Philippines, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. encourages Filipinos to reflect on past year’s accomplishments amid Chinese New Year celebrations.

“This occasion brims with infinite opportunities as we gather to pay homage to the heritage of the dragon, a timeless symbol of power, wisdom, and courage,” President Marcos said to the Filipino-Chinese community.

The President hopes that the successes achieved in 2023 will also be achieved this year.

Israel targets Rafah in Gaza conflict, frightened people say there’s nowhere left to go

0

RAFAH, Gaza Strip. As tensions escalate in the Gaza conflict, the focus shifts to Rafah, Gaza’s southernmost town, which has thus far escaped Israeli offensives. However, with Israel announcing its intention to target Rafah next, panic grips its swelling population.

The estimated 1.5 million residents, representing over half of Gaza’s population, face an uncertain future as they find themselves trapped with nowhere left to flee. The prospect of an impending offensive has left residents terrified, with desperation mounting among those who have already endured the horrors of war.

Jihan al-Hawajri, one of many sheltering in Rafah, expressed exhaustion and resignation, stating, “We’re exhausted. Seriously, we’re exhausted. Israel can do whatever it wants. I’m sitting in my tent. I’ll die in my tent.”

International concern over the humanitarian crisis has intensified, with United Nations officials warning of catastrophic consequences should Israel proceed with its assault on Rafah. The plight of over 600,000 children caught in the crossfire underscores the urgent need for a halt to military operations and a concerted effort to address the unfolding tragedy.

While the United States has voiced opposition to an attack on Rafah without provisions for its population, it continues to offer unwavering support to Israel’s campaign. This stance has drawn criticism as civilian casualties mount and the humanitarian situation deteriorates.

As Israel prepares for its assault on Rafah, the fate of civilians hangs in the balance. Trapped between Egypt, the Mediterranean Sea, and Israeli forces, the residents of Rafah face an uncertain future with limited avenues of escape.

With nearly 28,000 Palestinians killed and vast swathes of Gaza devastated by the conflict, the toll of Israel’s resolve to eradicate Hamas from the territory becomes increasingly apparent. Despite the destruction, residents cling to the hope of returning to their homes in Gaza City, highlighting the enduring resilience of the Palestinian people amidst adversity.

As the situation in Rafah intensifies, the urgency for a cessation of hostilities and a concerted international effort to address the humanitarian crisis grows. The people of Gaza can only hope for a swift resolution to the conflict that has brought untold suffering to their doorstep.

Exploring the rich traditions of Lunar New Year celebrations

Lunar New Year, often called the Spring Festival or Chinese New Year, is the most important holiday in China and Chinese communities around the world. It is not only celebrate in China. Vietnam, Korea, Malaysia, and Singapore also practice the Lunar New Year holiday. The two-week celebration includes family and friends, feasting and fireworks, parties and parades.

For more than 3,000 years, Lunar New Year was just what it sounds like—the beginning of a new year in the Chinese calendar. The historic Chinese calendar is a lunisolar calendar, meaning dates are determined by both the moon (lunar) and the sun (solar). Months begin with every new moon, when the moon is not visible in the night sky. The new year starts on the new moon nearest the midpoint between the winter solstice and the spring equinox, sometime between January 21 and February 20.

China officially adopted the Gregorian calendar, used by the West, in 1912. In the late 20th century, however, the holiday was re-introduced as the “Spring Festival.”

Although there is rarely a set “program” for Lunar New Year celebrations, some days are associated with specific rituals or festivities. Read through some highlights below. Use the questions in the Questions tab to understand the significance of some of the sumptuous foods associated with the Lunar New Year.

Before New Year

Prior to the official start of the holiday, Chinese households are thoroughly cleaned. Cleaning symbolizes ridding the household of the previous year’s bad luck and making the home welcoming to good luck in the coming year. (On the first several days of the festival, tradition holds that brooms be stored, so that the newly arrived good luck will not be swept away.)

The days or weeks leading up to Lunar New Year are also when communities begin to decorate with red: fresh red paint on the doors of businesses and homes, red paper cut-out decorations, red lanterns. Red is the color of joy and good fortune in Chinese cultures, and is most strongly associated with new year celebrations.

One of the traditional ways to begin celebrating the Lunar New Year is the “reunion dinner,” when families gather to celebrate hopes for the new year.

During the New Year Celebrations

How do you wish someone “happy new year” in Chinese? It depends on who you’re talking to. In China, the official language is Mandarin. Gong xi fa cai is how Mandarin-speakers wish you a happy new year—literally “wishing you to be prosperous in the coming year.” Many overseas Chinese communities speak Cantonese. Gung hay fat choy is how Cantonese speakers wish you a happy new year—literally “wishing you great happiness and prosperity.”

Some of the most common celebrations during the Lunar New Year festival include parties, firecrackers, and the famous lion dance familiar to Western audiences. During the first days of the Lunar New Year younger family members may begin receiving bright red envelopes full of money. These envelopes, known as hong bao (Mandarin)or lai see (Cantonese), are traditionally given to unmarried adults and children.

The third day of the Lunar New Year is often quieter and more somber than those preceding it. It is considered bad luck to visit friends or family, or play host to visitors yourself. This day is usually reserved for honoring deceased relatives by visiting graves or lighting incense or paper offerings in memory of loved ones.

Often times the seventh day of the Lunar New Year recognizes renri, the creation-day of human beings. To honor humanity’s connection to all living things.

The ninth day of Lunar New Year is recognized as the birthday of the Jade Emperor, the ruler of heaven in Taoist belief.

The beautiful Lantern Festival signals a close to the Lunar New Year festival. Paper lanterns light the way for lion dances and all-day parades and festivals. The bright lights of the Lantern Festival celebrate the first full moon after the Lunar New Year. The colorful lanterns, displayed outdoors as well as inside temples, are associated with guiding lost souls’ home and were originally created by monks to honor Buddha.

In Manila, crowds are gathering in Chinatown to celebrate the onset of the Year of the Wood Dragon, immersing themselves in vibrant traditional dances along lantern-lit streets adorned with delectable food, auspicious trinkets, and prayers for prosperity.

Despite grappling with the aftermath of the pandemic and navigating through global economic uncertainties, Chinese eateries and stores in the vicinity are adorned with colorful lights and festive decorations in anticipation of the Lunar New Year celebrations today, aiming to attract an influx of visitors.

In the historic Binondo commercial district, reputed as one of the oldest Chinatowns globally, lamp posts are adorned with dragon motifs, their tails gracefully encircling the poles. Meanwhile, within a bustling mall, a colossal dragon sculpture captivates selfie enthusiasts as they capture memorable moments amidst the Lunar New Year ambiance.

“I want to make it clear: This Administration’s position in introducing reforms to our Constitution extends to economic matters alone, or those strategically aimed at boosting our country’s economy. Nothing more,” pahayag ng Pangulo.

Great Protector of the Constitution.”
