“Yes, mag-ingat. Also because we (PH) chose to adhere to the one China policy. That’s our own decision hence our actions must match our official positions,” pahayag ni Pimentel.

Pope Francis affirms sexual pleasure as a gifr from God but urges caution against pornography

0

VATICAN CITY. Pope Francis emphasized that “sexual pleasure is a gift from God,” urging Catholics to appreciate this aspect of human existence while cautioning against the pitfalls of pornography. The pontiff addressed the issue during a catechesis dedicated to the “vice of lust” at his general audience in Saint Peter’s Square on Wednesday.

In his remarks, Pope Francis acknowledged the sanctity of sexual pleasure but expressed concern about its degradation due to the prevalence of pornography. He noted that “satisfaction without a relationship can generate forms of addiction,” highlighting the importance of cherishing love and maintaining meaningful connections.

“We must defend love,” declared the pope, acknowledging that triumphing over the challenges posed by lust can be a lifelong endeavor. The statement seemed to be a response to recent controversies involving sexually explicit content authored decades ago by the Vatican’s head of doctrine, Víctor Manuel Fernández.

Conservative critics were stirred last week when a book featuring explicit content written by Fernández resurfaced. The Argentinian cardinal, a close associate of Pope Francis, is known for his past work with sexually charged themes. Responding to the recent scandal, Fernández stated, “I would certainly not write [that] now,” distancing himself from his earlier writings.

In 2022, Pope Francis warned against the perils of digital pornography during a discussion with seminarians about the dangers of social media. Acknowledging the prevalence of the issue, he remarked, “It is a vice that so many people have. So many laymen, so many laywomen, and also priests and nuns. The devil enters from there.”

The pope’s stance on the matter aligns with his previous efforts to address challenges posed by modern technology and its impact on morality. In late 2020, the Vatican found itself in an awkward situation when Pope Francis’s official Instagram account “liked” a photo of the Brazilian model Natalia Garibotto. The Vatican clarified that the “like” was not from the Holy See, prompting an inquiry into the incident.

Laguna excels with 67 medals at 2023 National Batang Pinoy

STA. CRUZ, Laguna. The Province of Laguna emerged triumphant at the recently concluded Philippine Sports Commission’s National Batang Pinoy, clinching an impressive total of 67 medals during the week-long event held in Metro Manila from December 16 to 22, 2023.

Laguna’s medal haul included 20 gold, 20 silver, and 27 bronze medals, showcasing the province’s diverse talent across multiple sports. The Muaythai Team, led by Coach Preciosa Ocaya-Delarmino, played a pivotal role in this success, contributing a substantial 15 gold, 13 silver, and 9 bronze medals to Laguna’s overall tally.

The provincial contingent also demonstrated excellence in Badminton, Karatedo, Pencak Silat, Wrestling, Taekwondo, Cycling, Arnis, Athletics, and Table Tennis, underscoring the province’s commitment to fostering a well-rounded and competitive young athlete community.

Governor Ramil L. Hernandez and the Provincial Government of Laguna (PGL) threw their unwavering support behind the athletes, with the Provincial Sports and Games Development Office (PSGDO) fielding an impressive 225 competitors in the youth-oriented competition. Over 18,000 athletes from 190 local government units (LGUs) in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao participated in the event, making it one of the most extensive gatherings of young talents in the country.

Compared to their 2022 performance, where they secured 51 medals – 20 gold, 15 silver, and 16 bronze, Laguna’s 2023 medal tally showcased a significant improvement, winning 5 more silver and 11 more bronze medals. This earned them the 4th Overall Championship, with Quezon City, Pasig, and Baguio securing the 3rd, 2nd, and 1st places respectively in the 2022 national finals, where more than 80 cities and provinces took part.

The final overall medal tally for the 2023 Batang Pinoy is yet to be released by the Philippine Sports Commission. Despite the delays, Mr. Mario C. Tobias, In-Charge of Office (ICO) for PSGDO, confirmed that medalists and their coaches can anticipate cash incentives from PGL early this year. This gesture aims to recognize their hard work, dedication, and outstanding achievements in bringing honor to the province of Laguna on the national stage.

Medicine shipment en route to Gaza amid ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict

0

RAFAH, Gaza Strip. A shipment of essential medicines for hostages held by Hamas is making its way to Gaza. The breakthrough comes as France and Qatar mediated the first agreement between Israel and the militant group since the weeklong cease-fire in November.

The medicines, which have arrived in Egypt, are currently en route to the Gaza border. A senior Hamas official disclosed that for each box designated for the hostages, an additional 1,000 boxes would be sent in for the broader Palestinian population. The comprehensive deal also entails the delivery of humanitarian aid to residents of the besieged coastal enclave.

This agreement unfolds more than 100 days into a conflict that displays no signs of resolution, contributing to heightened tensions across the Middle East. Recent days have witnessed a complex web of strikes and counterstrikes extending from northern Iraq to the Red Sea and from southern Lebanon to Pakistan.

Despite facing one of the deadliest military campaigns in recent history, Palestinian militants continue to resist in various parts of Gaza. Approximately 85% of the narrow coastal territory’s 2.3 million people have fled their homes, and the United Nations reports that a quarter of the population is currently experiencing starvation.

Israel has expressed its commitment to dismantling Hamas, aiming to prevent a recurrence of the October 7 attack that triggered the current conflict. During that incident, militants breached Israel’s border defenses, infiltrating several communities, resulting in the deaths of around 1,200 people, predominantly civilians, and the capture of approximately 250 individuals.

As part of its promise, Israel has pledged to return more than 100 hostages still held inside Gaza. This commitment follows Hamas releasing most women and children captives in late November, exchanged for Palestinians imprisoned in Israel. However, Hamas has stated that it will not release any more hostages until a permanent cease-fire is established—a prospect Israel and its top ally, the United States, have ruled out. The situation remains highly complex, with the international community closely monitoring developments in the ongoing conflict.

China condemns President Marcos Jr. for congratulating Taiwan’s election winner

BEIJING. Tensions escalated between China and the Philippines as China’s Foreign Ministry summoned the Philippine ambassador on Tuesday to express strong disapproval over President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s congratulatory message to Taiwan’s presidential election winner, Lai Ching-te.

Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning addressed the media, asserting that Marcos’s remarks had “seriously violated the political commitments made by the Philippines to China and rudely interfered in China’s internal affairs.” China considers Taiwan as part of its own territory and condemns any statements that recognize the legitimacy of Taiwan’s government.

“We would like to sternly tell the Philippines not to play with fire on the Taiwan issue… (and) immediately stop making wrong words and deeds on Taiwan-related issues, and stop sending any wrong signals to Taiwan independence and separatist forces,” Mao declared.

Assistant Foreign Affairs Minister Nong Rong reportedly summoned the Philippine Ambassador to China and conveyed “solemn representations,” urging the Philippines to provide China with a “responsible explanation.”

President Marcos Jr. had extended his congratulations to Taiwan’s president-elect on Monday, expressing anticipation for “close collaboration” and the “strengthening of mutual interests.” Lai Ching-te, despised by Beijing, has committed to safeguarding Taiwan’s de facto independence and aligning it more closely with other democracies.

In his statement shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Marcos said, “On behalf of the Filipino people, I congratulate President-elect Lai Ching-te on his election as Taiwan’s next president.”

China’s reaction mirrored its response to U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s congratulatory message to Lai, where the Foreign Ministry claimed that Blinken’s words “send a gravely wrong signal to the ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist forces.” The ministry argued that such congratulations contradicted the U.S.’ commitment to maintaining only unofficial ties with Taiwan.

The exchange of diplomatic protests highlights the longstanding sensitive nature of Taiwan’s status and the complexities surrounding international recognition, with China asserting its territorial claims and opposing any actions that could be perceived as endorsing Taiwan’s independence.

“It depends on the House of Representatives if they will call for one. There is none so far, likely because Congress has not yet resumed session,” sabi ni Comelec Chairperson George Erwin Garcia nitong Martes, Enero 16.

North Korea abandons reconciliation with South amid escalating hostility, Kim Jong Un announces constitutional rewrite

0

SEOUL, South Korea. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un declared on Tuesday that his country would no longer pursue reconciliation with South Korea. State media reported that Kim called for the rewriting of North Korea’s constitution to eliminate the notion of shared statehood between the two war-divided nations.

This drastic departure from decades-long efforts toward peaceful unification comes amidst heightened tensions, marked by an increase in both Kim’s weapons development and joint military exercises between South Korea and the United States. Analysts suggest that Kim’s move could be aimed at diminishing South Korea’s influence in regional security matters and signaling a preference for direct negotiations with the United States amid the deepening nuclear standoff.

By declaring South Korea a permanent adversary rather than a potential partner for reconciliation, Kim may seek to bolster the credibility of his escalatory nuclear doctrine. This doctrine authorizes preemptive nuclear attacks if North Korea perceives a threat to its leadership.

In a move that underscores the seriousness of North Korea’s shift, key government agencies responsible for managing relations with South Korea were abolished during a meeting of North Korea’s rubber-stamp parliament on Monday. The Supreme People’s Assembly declared an “acute confrontation” between the two Koreas and emphasized the mistake of viewing the South as a diplomatic partner.

North Korea dissolved agencies such as the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Country, the National Economic Cooperation Bureau, and the (Diamond Mountain) International Tourism Administration, which were instrumental in facilitating North-South dialogue, negotiations, and cooperation.

During his address, Kim blamed South Korea and the United States for escalating tensions in the region, pointing to expanded joint military exercises, U.S. strategic military deployments, and trilateral security cooperation with Japan. Kim accused the South of being “top-class stooges” beholden to external powers engaged in confrontational maneuvers.

Kim called for the rewriting of North Korea’s constitution to redefine South Korea as the North’s “primary foe and invariable principal enemy.” He ordered the removal of symbols of inter-Korean reconciliation, calling for the elimination of concepts such as ‘reunification,’ ‘reconciliation,’ and ‘fellow countrymen’ from the national history.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol denounced Kim’s comments as “anti-national and anti-historical,” emphasizing the South’s firm defense readiness and a willingness to respond forcefully to provocations.

Kim reiterated that North Korea had no intention to unilaterally start a war but also had no intention to avoid one. He warned that a nuclear conflict in the Korean Peninsula would bring “unimaginable disaster and defeat to the United States.”

The North Korean government pledged to take “practical measures” to implement the decision to abolish agencies handling dialogue and cooperation with the South. The international community is closely watching North Korea’s actions, particularly amid growing concerns of an alleged arms cooperation deal with Russia, accused of providing support for North Korea’s military capabilities in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Houthi rebels strike US-owned ship off Yemen’s coast, raising tensions

0

JERUSALEM. Tensions escalate in the Gulf of Aden as Houthi rebels fired a missile, striking a U.S.-owned ship, the Gibraltar Eagle, just off the coast of Yemen on Monday. This follows less than a day after the rebels launched an anti-ship cruise missile towards an American destroyer in the Red Sea.

The attack, claimed by the Houthis, further intensifies the already heightened tensions in the Red Sea after recent American-led strikes on the rebels. The Houthis’ actions have disrupted global shipping routes, adding to the complexities of the region, which is already strained due to Israel’s conflict with Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations reported that the attack occurred approximately 110 miles southeast of Aden in the Gulf of Aden. The ship’s captain confirmed the missile hit the “port side of the vessel from above.”

Private security firms Ambrey and Dryad Global identified the vessel as the Eagle Gibraltar, a Marshall Islands-flagged bulk carrier. The U.S. military’s Central Command later acknowledged the strike, stating that the ship reported no injuries or significant damage and is continuing its journey.

Houthi military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree claimed responsibility for the attack in a televised address, declaring all American and British ships participating in the aggression against Yemen as hostile targets.

The Eagle Gibraltar, owned by Eagle Bulk Shipping based in Stamford, Connecticut, sustained limited damage to a cargo hold but remains stable and is heading out of the area, according to the company’s statement. All seafarers on board are confirmed to be uninjured.

Satellite-tracking data analyzed by the Associated Press revealed that the Eagle Gibraltar had initially been bound for the Suez Canal but rapidly changed course at the time of the attack.

Central Command also reported a separate anti-ship ballistic missile launch towards the southern Red Sea on Monday, which failed in flight and impacted on land in Yemen. The U.S. Maritime Administration issued a warning of a continuing high degree of risk to commercial vessels in the area, recommending that U.S. flag and U.S.-owned commercial vessels stay away from Yemen in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden until further notice.

The recent events mark an escalation in hostilities, with the first U.S.-acknowledged Houthi missile launch towards an American warship in the Red Sea, prompting concerns about potential retaliation. President Joe Biden stated that he “will not hesitate to direct further measures to protect our people and the free flow of international commerce as necessary.” The situation remains fluid, and the international community closely watches the developments in the region.
