0

“Kahapon lang tinurn down ko yung 3 requests from hotels for fireworks display. Ayaw talaga namin. May ina-allow kami na ordinary days, kapag may requests, during weddings. So far wala namang nag-aapply for weddings,” aniya.

DOH reports 88 fireworks-related injuries, warns public on deadly watusi

0

The Department of Health (DOH) has reported a total of 88 fireworks-related injuries as of early Thursday, with an alarming 13 new cases emerging. Among the new cases is a 4-year-old boy from Calabarzon who inadvertently swallowed a watusi firecracker.

According to the DOH, twelve of the new incidents occurred either at home or in public spaces, involving 10 males with ages ranging from five to 49 years old. Notably, 69% of the recent injuries resulted from active involvement in handling fireworks, while 42% were attributed to the use of illegal fireworks.

An overwhelming 96% of the reported cases took place in domestic settings, predominantly affecting males engaged in the handling of firecrackers.

The DOH issued a stern warning to the public regarding the ingestion of watusi, emphasizing its potential fatality. “Children often mistake them for candy due to their size and color,” the DOH cautioned.

In the case of the 4-year-old from Calabarzon, who swallowed a watusi, the DOH expressed concern as the child’s parents and family remain unreachable. Urging them to return to the hospital for proper medical attention, the DOH highlighted the delayed onset of symptoms in watusi poisoning, emphasizing the risk of death.

“There are now eighty-eight fireworks-related injuries (FWRI) overall, with three out of every ten cases coming from NCR (31, 35%),” the DOH revealed. Following NCR in rank as to the number of cases are Central Luzon (11, 12%), Ilocos Region (10, 11%), Bicol Region (5, 6%), Davao Region (5, 6%), and Soccsksargen (5, 6%).

Identifying the primary culprits, the DOH listed Boga, 5-Star, Kwitis, Piccolo, Pla-Pla, Whistle Bomb, and Luces as the top-ranked fireworks responsible for almost seven out of every ten (68%) FWRI cases. Illegal fireworks were implicated in about six out of every ten cases (52, 59%).

The DOH stressed the importance of seeking immediate medical attention for those who have ingested watusi. As first aid measures, the DOH advised against inducing vomiting but recommended administering 6-8 raw egg whites for children and 8-12 raw egg whites for adults to counter the immediate absorption of poisonous chemicals.

Additionally, for cases involving particles of firecrackers or fireworks in the eyes, the DOH recommended washing with clean water for a minimum of 15 minutes. Affected skin should be washed immediately, and contaminated clothes should be changed. In cases of inhalation, individuals are advised to breathe in clean open space air and seek medical assistance promptly, the department emphasized.

Jacques Delors, architect of the modern EU and ‘Mr. Europe,’ dies aged 98

BRUSSELS. Jacques Delors, the esteemed visionary and chief architect of a more unified Europe, passed away at the age of 98 in Paris, as confirmed by the Delors Institute think tank on Wednesday. Delors, often referred to as “Mr. Europe,” played a pivotal role in shaping the European Union during his transformative decade as chief executive.

In a statement, the Delors Institute expressed the profound loss, stating, “The whole of Europe mourns the death of one of its greatest architects.” They highlighted Delors’ enduring legacy, attributing the success of European integration to his vision, courage, conviction, perseverance, and relentless work during his tenure at the helm of the European Commission.

French President Emmanuel Macron’s office paid tribute to Delors, emphasizing his humble beginnings and unwavering commitment to human righteousness. Macron remarked that Delors never allowed the heights of power to compromise his moral integrity.

Jacques Delors, a Socialist and Catholic, earned the moniker “Mr. Europe” during his time as head of the EU bureaucracy from 1985 to 1995. Under his leadership, member countries agreed to dismantle barriers inhibiting the free movement of capital, goods, services, and people. Delors also played a crucial role in formulating the blueprint for economic and monetary union, resulting in the establishment of the European Central Bank and the euro currency.

Despite the success of his initiatives, some of Delors’ achievements faced challenges in the years leading up to his death. The eurozone experienced a crisis with Greece, and the EU grappled with a surge of refugees and migrants, revealing divisions within the bloc. In 2016, the UK voted to leave the EU, a move that contradicted Delors’ vision of an “ever-closer union.”

In a warning that resonates even today, Delors cautioned Europeans in 1995 about the future filled with danger. He stressed the importance of agreements at political, social, and economic levels to ensure the continued stability of the continent.

Wim Kok, former Dutch prime minister, praised Delors as the man who determined the face of Europe for a decade. Delors, however, viewed himself as merely one element in the chain, satisfied with the work accomplished during his tenure.

Delors’ influence extended beyond economic matters, as the EU evolved into areas such as foreign policy, customs and border controls, justice, and home affairs. Nevertheless, his vision of a federal Europe faced resistance, and the Maastricht Treaty in 1992 curtailed some of the powers he sought for the European Commission.

In his farewell address in 1995, Delors expressed satisfaction with the foundations of the European house, which he believed were solid. Post-Brussels, he continued to contribute to European policy discussions through a think tank in Paris.

Jacques Delors, a self-made man from a working-class background, left an indelible mark on European history. His legacy will be remembered as a driving force behind the EU’s transformation into a more unified and cooperative entity.

Libo-libong OFW, makikinabang sa wage increase sa Taiwan at Hong Kong

0

A 6-year-old boy traveling alone for Christmas was put on the wrong flight

FORT MYERS, Fla. A 6-year-old boy, embarking on a solo journey to spend Christmas with his grandmother in southwest Florida, found himself on the wrong Spirit Airlines flight, landing 160 miles away in Orlando, Florida.

Maria Ramos, the grandmother eagerly awaiting her grandson’s arrival at Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers on Thursday, was met with confusion when she was informed that the young traveler wasn’t on the expected Spirit Airlines flight.

“I ran inside the plane to the flight attendant and I asked her, ‘Where’s my grandson? He was handed over to you at Philadelphia?’ She said, ‘No, I had no kids with me,’” Ramos recounted to WINK News.

To her surprise, Ramos received a call from her grandson, who was in Orlando, explaining that he had landed there instead.

In a statement addressing the incident, Spirit Airlines claimed that the boy was under the constant care and supervision of an airline employee throughout the journey, despite the misstep of boarding him on the wrong flight. Once the error was identified, the airline promptly notified the family.

“We take the safety and responsibility of transporting all of our Guests seriously and are conducting an internal investigation,” the statement asserted. “We apologize to the family for this experience.”

The incident has prompted concerns about the safety and security measures in place for unaccompanied minors traveling during the busy holiday season. Spirit Airlines reassures the public that a thorough internal investigation is underway to prevent such incidents in the future, emphasizing their commitment to passenger safety.

As the airline works to address the situation, the family is left to grapple with the unexpected twist to their holiday reunion plans, hoping that awareness raised by this incident will contribute to enhanced safety protocols for young travelers.

Agricultural interventions uplift Pagsanjan farmers on Farmer’s Day

0

PAGSANJAN, Laguna. Approximately two hundred (200) farmer beneficiaries in Pagsanjan received a diverse array of agricultural interventions during a recent celebration of Farmer’s Day at the multi-purpose gym in Brgy. Poblacion 2.

The distributed interventions encompassed a varied range of essential resources, including drying nets and canvases, farming inputs, farm-ready seedlings, fruit trees, rotary cultivators, knapsack sprayers, crates, and mini hand tractors. Additionally, the farmers were awarded the Ratsada Marketing Hub: Agri Tindahan Package, which features a chest freezer, crates, trays, and personal protective equipment (PPE).

This initiative follows a similar endeavor in the municipality of Rizal, where thirty (30) farmers were presented with drying nets and canvases, farming inputs, farm-ready seedlings, fruit trees, rotary cultivators, knapsack sprayers, crates, and mini hand tractors. The event coincided with Rizal’s 105th Founding Anniversary.

These agricultural interventions, generously provided by the government, are strategically designed to uplift local farmers and contribute to poverty alleviation. By fortifying the farmers’ livelihoods, the aim is to enhance productivity and elevate the overall quality of agricultural produce in the region.

The commendable efforts to empower farmers through these interventions underscore the government’s commitment to fostering sustainable agricultural practices and bolstering the economic well-being of farming communities. As these initiatives take root, they are expected to make a lasting impact on the lives of the beneficiaries and the agricultural landscape of Pagsanjan and its neighboring regions.

Thousands flee widening Israeli assault in Central Gaza as military launches new strikes

0

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip. The ongoing conflict between Israel and Gaza has escalated, with thousands of Palestinian families fleeing the intensified ground offensive launched by the Israeli military. The latest strikes, targeting central and southern areas of Gaza, have resulted in dozens of casualties, according to Palestinian health officials.

On foot or using donkey carts loaded with their belongings, a continuous stream of people sought refuge in Deir al-Balah, a town that typically has a population of around 75,000. However, it is now overwhelmed by several hundred thousand people displaced from northern Gaza, which has been extensively damaged.

As existing U.N. shelters are already beyond capacity, the newly displaced residents resorted to setting up tents on sidewalks to endure the cold winter night. The majority crowded around the town’s main hospital, Al-Aqsa Martyrs, hoping for relative safety from Israeli airstrikes.

However, the reality is that no place in Gaza is entirely safe. Israeli offensives have pushed most of the population into areas like Deir al-Balah, Rafah, and a small rural region along the southern coastline. Unfortunately, these areas continue to be targeted by Israeli strikes, causing significant harm to homes filled with people.

The most recent wave of displacement stems from the targeting of several densely populated refugee camps in central Gaza as part of the ongoing Israeli ground assault. One of these camps, Bureij, faced intense bombardment throughout the night as Israeli troops moved in.

Rami Abu Mosab, who sought shelter in Bureij after fleeing his home in northern Gaza, described the situation as “a night of hell.” He reported the presence of warplanes overhead, along with gunfire and explosions from the camp’s eastern edge. Although a nearby home was hit, no one could reach the affected area.

Bureij camp, like other locations in Gaza, houses refugees from the 1948 war surrounding Israel’s creation and their descendants. Now, it resembles other densely populated neighborhoods, with residents fearing a fate similar to the destruction witnessed in northern Gaza.

In Khan Younis, just south of Deir al-Balah, Israeli shelling struck a residential building next to Al-Amal Hospital, resulting in at least 20 deaths and dozens more wounded, according to Health Ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qidra. The death toll is expected to rise, and footage from the scene depicted a tragic aftermath with torn bodies in the street.

Israel has justified its bombing campaign and ground offensive as necessary measures to dismantle Hamas and prevent a recurrence of the October 7 attack. The October incident saw militants breaking through Israel’s defenses, resulting in approximately 1,200 casualties—mostly civilians—and around 240 abductions, with an estimated 129 individuals still in captivity. Israel anticipates that achieving its objectives will take “many months.”
