Lumagda sa isang memorandum of understanding (MOU) ang Pilipinas at Estados Unidos kahapon na magpapahusay sa nuclear cooperation ng dalawang bansa.
Ayon sa US State Department, ang MOU Concerning Strategic Civil Nuclear Cooperation ay magpapahusay sa pakikipag-ugnayan ng dalawang bansa sa seguridad ng enerhiya at magpapalakas ng kanilang diplomatiko at pang-ekonomiyang relasyon.
Pumirma para sa United States si Undersecretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Bonnie Jenkins habang pumirma naman para sa Pilipinas si Department of Energy Undersecretary Gerardo Erguiza Jr.
“The United States and the Philippines have an enduring alliance and maintain long-standing cooperation in the fields of security, energy, commerce, and nonproliferation. Deepening our cooperation in nuclear energy, science and technology has the potential to make a significant contribution to our shared clean energy goals, agricultural development, availability of clean water, medical treatments, and more. Our nuclear cooperation rests on a strong nonproliferation regime and the Philippines’ steadfast commitment to nonproliferation,” ayon sa statement ng State Department.
Ang Nuclear Cooperation MOU ay mga diplomatikong mekanismo na nagpapalakas at nagpapalawak ng mga estratehikong ugnayan sa pagitan ng US at isang kasosyong bansa.
Sinabi ng Departamento ng Estado na nagbibigay ito ng balangkas para sa kooperasyon at magkatugmang diskarte sa hindi paglaganap ng mga civil nuclear issues at para sa pakikipag-ugnayan sa pagitan ng mga eksperto mula sa gobyerno, industriya, pambansang laboratoryo, at mga institusyong pang-akademiko.
