WELLINGTON, New Zealand —  New Zealand police have recovered a rare Fabergé pendant that a theft suspect allegedly swallowed during a heist at a luxury jewelry store in Auckland.

Authorities said the pendant, valued at 33,000 New Zealand dollars, was expelled naturally from the man’s gastrointestinal tract on Thursday night after six days of continuous monitoring. No medical procedure was required to retrieve the item.

The 32-year-old suspect, whose name has not been released, was arrested on November 28 inside Partridge Jewelers after he allegedly consumed the jeweled pendant in an attempt to conceal the theft.

The pendant is a limited-edition Fabergé egg inspired by the 1983 James Bond film “Octopussy,” which centers on a jewel-smuggling operation involving a counterfeit Fabergé egg. Only 50 pieces of this pendant were produced.

A photograph released by police showed the gold pendant still attached to its chain, complete with its price tag. Both the recovered item and the suspect remain in police custody.

The man first appeared in the Auckland District Court on November 29 but did not enter a plea to the theft charge. He is scheduled to return to court on December 8.

Police officers had been assigned to watch the suspect around the clock while waiting for the pendant to pass. “Given this man is in Police custody, we have a duty of care to continue monitoring him,” Inspector Grae Anderson said earlier in the week.

According to the jeweler’s website, the pendant is crafted from gold, coated with green enamel, and adorned with 183 diamonds and two sapphires. Standing 8.4 centimeters tall, it opens to reveal an 18-carat yellow gold octopus embellished with white diamond suckers and black diamond eyes, a direct reference to the villain at the center of the Bond film.
