MOSCOW. Russian troops have seized control of two more settlements in the eastern Donetsk region, the Defence Ministry announced on Saturday, extending Moscow’s slow advance along the 1,000-kilometer front line.
The newly captured villages were identified as Kleban-Byk, northwest of the town of Toretsk, which has faced months of heavy attacks, and Seredne, near the administrative border with the northeastern Kharkiv region. On Friday, Russia had also reported the capture of three other villages, including Katerynivka and Rusyn Yar, situated close to the embattled city of Kostiantynivka.
Ukraine’s military has not confirmed the loss of any territory but said its forces had recaptured the settlement of Zelenyi Hai, located on the edge of the Dnipropetrovsk region, where Russian troops claim to have made inroads. Ukrainian officials added that Zelenyi Hai has come under renewed Russian assault.
A statement from Ukraine’s General Staff said only that Katerynivka was among several localities targeted by Russian attacks. Meanwhile, the country’s military intelligence agency, HUR, reported joint operations with frontline units to stall Russian advances in Donetsk and prevent incursions into the Dnipropetrovsk region.
Reuters could not independently verify battlefield reports from either side.
Since its failed push toward Kyiv in the early weeks of the February 2022 invasion, Moscow has concentrated its efforts on capturing the Donbas region, comprising Donetsk and Luhansk.
