In an effort to combat misinformation and bolster transparency, TikTok announced on Tuesday the launch of a new tool aimed at assisting creators in labeling AI-generated content on its platform.

In a press release, TikTok explained that this tool is designed to enable creators to easily adhere to the company’s existing AI policy. This policy mandates that any manipulated content portraying realistic scenes must be appropriately labeled to indicate its artificial or altered nature.

TikTok has been proactive in its stance against deepfakes, which are videos and images digitally created or altered through artificial intelligence, particularly when they mislead users regarding real-world events. While TikTok strictly prohibits deepfakes involving private individuals and minors, it does permit altered images of public figures in specific contexts, such as for artistic and educational purposes.

As part of this initiative, TikTok also revealed its plan to initiate testing of an “AI-generated” label later this week. This label will eventually be applied to content detected as having been edited or created through AI methods. Furthermore, the platform will rename its effects that incorporate AI, explicitly including the term “AI” in both the name and accompanying label.

TikTok’s move comes as concerns surrounding the influence of AI in disseminating misinformation continue to grow. The European Union has been advocating for online platforms to take a more active role in combatting false information by introducing clear labels on text, images, and other content generated using artificial intelligence.

TikTok’s new tool and labeling system represent an important step in the ongoing battle against misinformation and the responsible use of AI on social media platforms.
