A devastating wildfire in eastern Canada has consumed over 24,000 acres of land and prompted the evacuation of thousands from Labrador City, where significant impacts on local infrastructure have been reported, officials confirmed on Saturday.

Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, Andrew Furey, described the blaze as an “extremely aggressive inferno” that, despite being initially contained earlier in the week, rapidly expanded due to shifting weather conditions on Friday. The fire surged by 22,000 acres, advancing approximately 13 miles within just four hours.

Jeremy Reynolds, a spokesperson for the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, stated that around 9,500 residents have been evacuated from Labrador City. “Essential personnel remain to manage the emergency response,” he noted.

Labrador City, situated in the province’s remote northwest, lies roughly 900 miles north of Ottawa, Canada’s capital. As the fire edges closer, residents have been directed to evacuate to Happy Valley-Goose Bay, a six-hour drive away, according to Premier Furey.

An evacuation order issued on Friday evening warned of the fire’s potential to encroach further into Labrador West over the next 24 to 48 hours. An evacuation alert has also been issued for Wabush, a neighboring community, urging residents to prepare for immediate evacuation if necessary.
