Britney Spears’ spouse, Sam Asghari, has officially filed for divorce from the pop sensation, just 14 months after their wedding. The news came to light on Wednesday evening from a source familiar with the situation.
This confirmation came shortly after various sources, including TMZ and People magazine, reported that the couple had decided to separate. While an email sent to a representative for Spears remained unanswered, it was made evident that the divorce filing had occurred on Wednesday. However, details regarding the location of the case filing were not available in the court records of Los Angeles and Ventura counties.
The wedding between Spears and Asghari took place on June 9, 2022, at her residence in Thousand Oaks, California. The event was attended by celebrities like Selena Gomez, Drew Barrymore, Paris Hilton, and Madonna, and was seen as a significant moment in Spears’ life, marking her newfound independence after her court conservatorship ended only six months prior. The conservatorship had controlled her life for over 13 years.
Asghari, a model and actor, first crossed paths with the pop superstar when he appeared in the music video for her song “Slumber Party” in 2016. Spears had expressed her desire to marry Asghari, considering it one of the reasons she sought to end the restrictive conservatorship, which she believed was inhibiting her personal choices. The couple announced their engagement in September 2021, just as it became apparent that the conservatorship would be terminated, which eventually occurred in November of the same year.
Tragically, Spears shared that she and Asghari had experienced a miscarriage early in her pregnancy in May 2022, occurring just a month before their wedding.
Reports of challenges within their relationship had been circulating in recent months. This divorce marks Asghari’s first marriage at the age of 29, while it is Spears’ third marriage at the age of 41. Her previous marriages include a brief one to childhood friend Jason Alexander in 2004, and later to dancer Kevin Federline the same year. Federline is the father of her two teenage sons and holds custody of them.
Spears was placed under the conservatorship managed by her father in 2008, which initially saw her continue her career with music releases, music videos, and live performances, including a prominent residency in Las Vegas. However, as her public appearances decreased, a movement advocating for her freedom, known as #FreeBritney, gained momentum. Following the end of the conservatorship, Spears has released music, including a collaboration with Elton John in 2022, though she has not made any live performance announcements.
Her upcoming memoir, titled “The Woman in Me,” is scheduled for release in October.
