VATICAN CITY | Pope Leo XIV’s lung is recovering well following surgery to remove the lower lobe of his right lung, with routine post-operative tests showing normal results, according to the Vatican’s medical update on Thursday, October 15.

The pope’s doctors, Dr. Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora, reported that a chest X-ray showed good recovery of the operated lung. The 70-year-old pontiff was also carrying out his daily activities independently and had completed a full session of physical rehabilitation.

The surgery was performed at Rome’s Agostino Gemelli Hospital on October 13. According to the Vatican, doctors removed the lower lobe of his right lung and confirmed a diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma, a type of lung cancer, through an examination of tissue during the operation. The procedure was completed without reported complications.

In an earlier update, the Holy See Press Office said the pope had resumed eating normally, begun walking around his hospital room and undergone respiratory physiotherapy. He also celebrated Mass with other priests in a room prepared for the purpose at the hospital.

The latest medical bulletin said his recovery was progressing normally and in line with expectations. The Vatican has not announced a change to the previously reported plan for him to remain hospitalized for about a week. His recovery will continue to be monitored by his medical team.

The pope’s condition remains under medical observation as he continues his post-operative recovery.
