AHMEDABAD, India. The sole survivor of the Air India crash that killed 241 people on Thursday was thrown from the aircraft before it exploded, then walked to a nearby ambulance, medics said.
The survivor, identified as Vishwashkumar Ramesh, a British national of Indian origin, is now in stable condition at Ahmedabad’s Civil Hospital. Indian Home Minister Amit Shah confirmed that he had met Ramesh following the accident.
“He was disoriented with multiple injuries all over his body, but he seems to be out of danger,” said Dr. Dhaval Gameti, who treated him.
According to another medic, Ramesh said the plane began descending shortly after takeoff and suddenly split in two, launching him outside the aircraft just before a loud explosion. Video aired by Indian news networks showed a bloodied Ramesh walking away from the crash site as bystanders rushed to help.
Ramesh, who was carrying his boarding pass when admitted to the hospital, described the chaos to the Hindustan Times.
“When I got up, there were bodies all around me. I was scared. I stood up and ran,” he recalled.
Ramesh had been traveling to London with his brother, whom he has not been able to locate. His cousin, Ajay Valgi, told the BBC that Ramesh called family in Leicester shortly after the crash.
“He only said that he’s fine, nothing else,” Valgi said. “We’re happy he’s OK, but we’re still upset about the other brother.”
Another brother, Nayan Kumar Ramesh, told Sky News that Ramesh made a video call to their father immediately after the crash.
“He said, ‘The plane’s crashed. I don’t know where my brother is. I don’t see any other passengers. I don’t know how I’m alive, how I exited the plane’,” Nayan recounted.
Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner carrying 242 passengers and crew, crashed into a medical college hostel in Ahmedabad shortly after takeoff. The incident is now under investigation by Indian aviation authorities.
