“Freakier Friday,” the sequel to the 2003 hit “Freaky Friday,” reunites Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis in a lively but often chaotic continuation of the beloved body-swap comedy.
Directed by Nisha Ganatra, the film leans heavily on the formula of its predecessor, sometimes too much so. While the humor is more manic and the plot twists more exaggerated, the chemistry between Lohan and Curtis remains the heart of the movie.
This time, the magic expands to a double body swap, involving not only Anna (Lohan) and Tess (Curtis), but also Anna’s teenage daughter Harper (Julia Butters) and her rival Lily (Sophia Hammons). The result is a tangled web of identities that can at times be confusing, though it delivers plenty of comic moments.
The film begins 22 years after the events of the original, with Anna now a single mother managing a pop star, and Tess continuing her career as a therapist and podcaster. A chance encounter with a charming chef, Eric (Manny Jacinto), sets off a whirlwind romance leading to wedding preparations, which in turn set the stage for another supernatural twist.
Highlights include Curtis’s comic turn while navigating “senior aisle” purchases and Lohan’s hilariously awkward attempts at adult flirting. The movie also sprinkles in generational jokes, such as teens dismissing Facebook as “a database of old people.”
Despite pacing issues and occasional silliness, “Freakier Friday” offers lighthearted entertainment with nostalgic appeal. Fans of the original will appreciate the callbacks, though the plot may feel overly familiar.
The film, a Walt Disney Studios release, is rated PG for thematic elements, rude humor, language, and suggestive references. Running time: 111 minutes. It earns two and a half stars out of four.
