BEKASI, Indonesia — Rescue teams on Tuesday completed the recovery of victims from a commuter train car involved in a collision outside Jakarta, confirming a death toll of 15, all of whom were women.

The accident occurred Monday at Bekasi Timur Station when a long-distance train struck the rear car of a stationary commuter train. The impacted carriage was designated exclusively for female passengers, a measure commonly used in Indonesia to address harassment concerns.

According to Bobby Rasyidin, chief executive of state-owned railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia, 88 injured passengers were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. The remains of those who died were brought to a hospital for identification.

“We are currently ensuring that all victims receive the best possible care,” Rasyidin said.

Authorities said rescue operations concluded by midmorning Tuesday, with no additional casualties found. Mohammad Syafii, head of the National Search and Rescue Agency, confirmed that all victims had been accounted for.

Officials reported that all 240 passengers aboard the Argo Bromo Anggrek long-distance train were unharmed.

An investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing. Jakarta Police Chief Asep Edi Suheri said authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the incident.

In a statement, Indonesia’s Ministry of Transportation said initial findings suggest the sequence of events began when a commuter train struck a stalled taxi near Bekasi Timur Station. This prompted railway personnel to halt another commuter train at the station, which was subsequently hit by the oncoming long-distance train.

Rasyidin said the National Transportation Safety Committee will conduct a more detailed investigation to establish the exact cause of the accident.

Rail incidents remain a concern in Indonesia, where parts of the rail network are aging. In January 2024, a train collision in West Java province left at least four people dead.
