From a hobby discovered by a neighbor to a career shaped by competition, continuous learning, and loyal clients, Joella Ocampo has built her journey in the beauty industry one step at a time.

SAN PABLO CITY, Philippines — What began as a hobby eventually became a career and a thriving salon business for Joella Ocampo, a hair and makeup artist whose work has earned the trust of generations of clients, including some of San Pablo’s well-known and affluent personalities.

Ocampo did not set out with a clear plan to build a career in the beauty industry. It started when a neighbor and friend who was a beautician noticed her talent and encouraged her to pursue it. She eventually worked at her friend’s salon, where she learned the basics of hairstyling, hair coloring, makeup and hair treatments.

“At first it was just a hobby,” Ocampo recalled. But she soon realized that she wanted to learn more. She moved to a larger salon in San Pablo, where she worked alongside other skilled beauticians and gained more experience. She also began attending seminars and looking for opportunities to improve her skills.

One of the important milestones in her early career came in 2000, when she joined a Hair Asia competition. Ocampo said she emerged as champion among the beauticians who competed.

The experience gave her greater confidence in her abilities and strengthened her belief in the talent she had been given. “I can tell that this is my stepping stone that brought me to this day,” she said.

Building her own salon business was another chapter in her journey, and it came with its own difficulties. One of the biggest challenges was finding enough financial resources to cover the costs of establishing and operating a salon, including the space, renovations, equipment, styling tools, beauty products and other supplies.

Ocampo chose to start small and carefully manage what she had. She prioritized the things she needed most, looked for affordable but quality suppliers and gradually reinvested the income from the business into better equipment, products and services.

Through the years, the salon grew along with her clientele. Among those who have placed their trust in Ocampo are some of San Pablo’s affluent and well-known personalities, as well as ordinary customers who have remained loyal to her through the years.

For Ocampo, however, every client deserves the same level of care. “The secret to keeping my clients coming back is treating them like my own family and friends,” she said.

She believes that a successful beauty business is built not only on technical skills but also on relationships. She takes time to listen to her clients, understand what they want and make them feel comfortable and valued.

Many of her customers have also recommended her services to family members, friends and colleagues. For Ocampo, those referrals are among the most rewarding parts of her work because they show that clients trust her enough to recommend her to people who are important to them.

Her experience has also helped her develop an efficient approach to her work. Ocampo said she can provide haircuts for approximately 15 clients within two hours, serving both men and women while still giving attention to their individual needs.

She also believes that knowing what works for a client is an important part of being a good hairstylist. She considers facial features, hair type and overall appearance before making recommendations.

While she respects what clients ask for, she is also willing to give professional advice when she believes another style would better suit them. For Ocampo, the goal is not simply to complete a service but to help clients look and feel their best.

Her career has also given her opportunities to work with artists and other well-known personalities. These experiences have allowed her to showcase her skills, meet people from different backgrounds and expand her professional network.

She considers it a privilege that her work has taken her to different places and allowed her to meet many people. What began as a hobby eventually opened doors that she never expected when she was starting out.

Despite her years of experience, Ocampo continues to believe that learning should never stop. “Even after many years in the beauty industry, I believe that learning should never stop,” she said.

She regularly attends seminars and training programs covering hair cutting, coloring, hairstyling and makeup. For Ocampo, staying updated is important because the beauty industry continues to change and clients are constantly looking for new styles and techniques.

One of the people who had a significant influence on her professional development was the late James Cooper, a respected makeup artist and hairstylist who worked with actress Maricel Soriano.

Ocampo said Cooper shared techniques, tips and tricks that helped her improve her craftsmanship and develop a more professional approach to makeup. The lessons she received from experienced people in the industry became part of the foundation she continues to use in her work.

For Ocampo, professionalism is just as important as talent. She believes clients appreciate someone who respects their time, keeps appointments and takes their concerns seriously. Trust is also essential because customers are placing their appearance in the hands of the person providing the service.

Good customer service, she said, means more than simply providing what a client asks for. It means making people feel welcome, listening to them and ensuring that they are satisfied with the result.

Her years in business have taught her that success takes time. “Success does not happen overnight. It requires hard work, patience, and perseverance,” she said.

That lesson is one she wants aspiring hair and makeup artists to understand before entering the industry. For Ocampo, talent alone is not enough. A person must be willing to practice, learn, accept criticism and continue improving.

Her advice to those who are afraid to start is straightforward. “Pursue it only if you genuinely love and enjoy the craft,” she said.

She believes that people who truly enjoy their work are more likely to stay committed when challenges come. She also encourages aspiring artists to use quality products and tools, explore their abilities and remain open to new techniques and trends.

Ocampo considers commitment to quality, confidence in one’s talent and good customer service among the most important qualities an aspiring beauty professional should develop. She also believes that being kind, friendly and approachable can help build the trust and loyalty that every service business needs.

Although she already has her own salon, Ocampo continues to look ahead. Her dream is to develop the business into a fully established salon that she can personally manage and eventually oversee with a team of skilled beauticians. She hopes to create a workplace where other beauty professionals can develop their skills, gain experience and build their own careers.

Her ambition is not simply to expand the business for herself. She wants to use what she has learned through the years to guide and support other people entering the profession.

If she could speak to her younger self, Ocampo said she would give one simple piece of advice. “Never give up on your dreams,” she said.

Her own experience has shown her why. There were financial challenges, difficult periods and many things she had to learn along the way, but she continued working and improving her craft.

Today, the woman who once treated hairstyling and makeup as a hobby has built a career around the skills she developed over the years. Her salon now serves a wide range of clients, from longtime customers and families to some of San Pablo’s well-known personalities.

For Ocampo, building sincere relationships goes beyond providing a beauty service. She listens, remembers, cares, and treats each client with genuine warmth, turning everyday appointments into lasting connections built on trust and respect.

Her message to other artists and entrepreneurs remains simple. “Continue pursuing your dream and never give up.”

For someone whose career began with a neighbor recognizing a talent she had not yet fully explored, Ocampo’s story is a reminder that opportunities can begin in unexpected places. What matters, she believes, is having the courage to take the opportunity, the patience to keep learning and the determination to continue when the road becomes difficult.

And for Joella Ocampo, the journey that began as a hobby is still moving forward, with a growing business, loyal clients and a dream of creating opportunities for the next generation of beauty professionals.
