STADE, Germany — Six people were killed after a shooting at a youth welfare facility in the northern German town of Stade, with authorities arresting two suspects as investigators work to determine the motive behind the attack.

Police said the shooting occurred at the facility on Dankersstrasse, located near the town center. The facility provides temporary accommodation and support services, including assistance for pregnant women and young mothers with children.

Authorities initially reported five fatalities, all adults, before confirming that another victim later died from injuries sustained in the attack. Several others were reported injured, with some suffering serious wounds.

Two people were taken into custody, including the suspected shooter. Police said the role of the second detained individual remains under investigation, and officials said there was no longer any danger to the wider public.

A large emergency response followed the shooting, with police, ambulances, and forensic teams deployed to the area. Authorities briefly advised residents to avoid the location while the operation was ongoing.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear. German authorities continue to investigate what led to the shooting and the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

The incident adds to concerns over rare but serious mass shootings in Germany, a country with strict firearms regulations. Previous high-profile attacks include the 2023 Hamburg shooting and the 2020 Hanau shootings.
