COLOGNE, Germany | German police have seized a humanoid robot and the mobile phones of two young men suspected of using the machine to sexually harass a 16-year-old girl, as investigators examine whether its movements were remotely controlled or programmed in advance.
The incident occurred shortly before midnight on October 10 near a fast-food restaurant in Cologne, western Germany, according to police information reported by CBS News. The robot allegedly touched the girl’s buttocks and made repeated thrusting movements toward her. The suspected operators, aged 16 and 19, reportedly filmed and livestreamed the encounter on social media.
Police responding to the incident located the two suspects nearby and found the robot inside the trunk of a vehicle. Authorities confiscated the machine and both mobile phones for examination. Investigators are reviewing video footage and other evidence to establish exactly how the robot was operated and whether its actions were deliberate.
Videos circulating online appear to show the robot approaching groups of women on a busy nightlife street and making inappropriate physical contact and gestures. One of the individuals involved later claimed on TikTok that the contact with the girl was accidental. Investigators are examining the footage to determine the sequence of events.
The case presents an unusual legal challenge because the alleged conduct involved a machine rather than direct physical contact by a person. According to CBS News, German authorities are investigating the incident on suspicion of a sexually motivated insult. Possible legal violations involving the recording or distribution of images may also be examined. No charges had been reported against the two suspects as of October 14.
Cologne police have also cautioned against mocking the incident or circulating comments that could compound the harm experienced by the victim.
The case raises broader questions about accountability as humanoid robots become more accessible to private owners. Although such machines can perform programmed movements or be operated remotely, investigators must establish who controlled the robot and whether its actions were intentional before determining potential criminal responsibility.
