TOLEDO, Spain | October 28, 2026 | At least 64 people were killed and around 80 others injured when two high-speed passenger trains collided in central Spain on Wednesday, according to reports citing regional authorities. The crash near Urda in Toledo province triggered a large-scale rescue operation and disrupted rail services linking Madrid with southern Spain.

The collision occurred at about 8.54 a.m. when a Renfe high-speed train struck the rear of an Iryo train that was stopped on the tracks, according to Spain’s public broadcaster RTVE. Two carriages reportedly fell down an embankment, complicating rescue efforts as emergency teams searched the wreckage for victims and assisted survivors.

The regional government of Castilla-La Mancha activated its emergency plan and requested assistance from Spain’s Military Emergency Unit. Emergency personnel, firefighters, police and medical teams were deployed to the scene. Renfe also activated its crisis response arrangements and a support plan for victims and their families, according to the state-owned railway operator.

The cause of the collision remained under investigation. Rail services between Madrid, Ciudad Real and Andalusia were suspended following the accident, while authorities established assistance centers for affected passengers and their relatives.

The disaster comes after another major railway accident in Spain earlier this year. A collision near Adamuz in Córdoba province in January killed 46 people and injured more than 150, according to published reports. The latest crash has renewed concerns about railway safety, although investigators have yet to establish the circumstances that led to Wednesday’s collision.

Spain operates an extensive high-speed rail network connecting major cities and regions. The Madrid-to-Andalusia corridor is an important route for domestic passenger travel, making the disruption significant for commuters and travelers.

Authorities continue to investigate the crash and assess the full extent of the damage. The final death toll and the precise cause of the collision will depend on official findings as rescue operations and the investigation proceed.
