LONDON | British actor and comedian Russell Brand has been convicted of rape and three counts of sexual assault following a four-week trial at Southwark Crown Court, concluding a high-profile criminal case involving allegations by six women dating from 1999 to 2009.

A jury found Brand, 51, guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault involving four women. He was acquitted of two other rape charges and one charge of attempted indecent assault. Following the verdict on November 5, he was taken into custody after previously being released on bail. Judge Joel Bennathan said Brand faces a significant prison term, with sentencing scheduled for November 9.

The charges stemmed from incidents between 2004 and 2009, including allegations involving women he encountered through his entertainment work. The Metropolitan Police said the convicted offences took place at different locations, including a radio station, a DVD recording set and Brand’s former residence.

Brand denied all charges throughout the proceedings. During his testimony, he acknowledged having had numerous sexual relationships but maintained that he had never forced anyone into sexual activity against their will. His defense also questioned the reliability of the allegations, arguing that the complaints were made years after the alleged incidents and following the publication of media reports about him in 2023.

The case emerged after Channel 4’s Dispatches, The Times and The Sunday Times published allegations involving Brand in September 2023. The Metropolitan Police subsequently launched an investigation and established a dedicated team to assess complaints from women who came forward.

According to the police, investigators interviewed more than 100 witnesses, collected over 400 witness statements and examined more than 1,400 documents. They also reviewed hundreds of hours of Brand’s television appearances, performances, interviews and podcasts to establish timelines and assess evidence. The passage of time presented challenges, including the absence of available CCTV and forensic evidence.

The verdict marks a significant development in the career of a performer who was once among Britain’s most recognizable entertainment personalities. Brand rose to prominence in the early 2000s through television and radio presenting, stand-up comedy and film appearances, including Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek. He also became widely known for his marriage to American singer Katy Perry, which lasted from 2010 to 2012.

In later years, Brand moved away from mainstream television and film, building a substantial online following through commentary on politics, religion, wellness and social issues.

The Metropolitan Police said the conviction followed an extensive investigation and praised the women who came forward despite the lengthy period between the alleged offences and the criminal proceedings. Authorities have also encouraged other potential victims to contact investigators.
