WASHINGTON | October 23, 2026 | Artificial intelligence is accelerating the discovery of software security flaws, raising concerns that hackers could exploit weaknesses faster than organizations can repair them and trigger further disruptions to websites and online services worldwide, cybersecurity experts warn.
The latest concerns follow the disclosure of two critical vulnerabilities in PHP, a widely used programming language that powers websites and web applications. The PHP development team confirmed on October 21 that the flaws could allow attackers to execute malicious code remotely without authentication, potentially giving them control over vulnerable systems. The team released security updates and urged users to install them immediately.
The vulnerabilities, identified as CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619, affect PHP installations that serve web requests. The official PHP security advisory identified the risk as particularly serious for certain configurations in which a malicious request could trigger an attack before application code runs. The team said there were no complete mitigations and that updating to a fixed version was the only safe option.
The incident highlights a growing challenge for cybersecurity teams. Artificial intelligence can analyze large codebases, identify programming errors and help researchers develop ways to reproduce security flaws. The same capabilities, however, can help malicious actors develop exploits more quickly, reducing the time organizations have to secure vulnerable systems before attacks begin.
Research from cybersecurity intelligence firm VulnCheck, cited in reporting published this week, indicates that the number of discovered software vulnerabilities has doubled year over year, with AI contributing to the increase. However, more disclosed vulnerabilities do not automatically translate into more successful attacks. Some flaws are difficult to exploit, and the consequences depend on whether affected systems are exposed, whether attackers can develop working exploits and how quickly patches are installed.
Recent security concerns have extended beyond PHP. Cybersecurity researchers have also reported vulnerabilities involving Node.js and Plex, while security incidents affecting AI gateway LiteLLM and software development platform Railway have added to concerns about the security of internet-facing systems and the software supply chain.
The US National Institute of Standards and Technology has acknowledged that AI is changing vulnerability management by creating opportunities to identify and exploit flaws at greater speed. In an August 2026 cybersecurity briefing, NIST said traditional approaches centered on periodic patching and manual remediation may need to evolve toward continuous, automated and context-aware vulnerability management.
The challenge is not new. Software vulnerabilities have long exposed organizations to data theft, service outages and unauthorized access. What has changed is the speed at which advanced tools can search for weaknesses and potentially turn discoveries into attacks. Organizations with outdated software, limited security staff or complex systems may struggle to keep pace.
Security specialists advise website operators and businesses to identify affected systems, install verified security updates, remove unnecessary internet-facing services and strengthen access controls. Organizations should also maintain tested backups and incident response plans to limit damage if an attack succeeds. For PHP users, the development team specifically recommends upgrading to a patched release.
AI is also becoming a valuable defensive tool, helping security researchers discover weaknesses before criminals exploit them. The long-term outcome will depend partly on whether developers and system operators can use that advantage to repair vulnerabilities faster than attackers can weaponize them. Until then, cybersecurity teams face mounting pressure to shorten the gap between discovering a flaw and securing the systems affected by it.
