EDMONTON, Alberta | October 19, 2026 | Four Canadian Armed Forces members have died and 39 people have been hospitalized, including at least 19 in critical condition, after a fast-moving fire swept through a military training area at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta, triggering a major emergency response.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed the four deaths on October 18 and described the incident as a devastating tragedy for the country’s armed forces. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith reported the hospitalization figures as authorities coordinated medical assistance and support for the injured.
The fire reportedly began at approximately 4 p.m. local time on October 17 inside the base’s training area. Strong winds fueled the flames, allowing the fire to spread rapidly and complicating efforts to bring it under control.
Military and civilian emergency crews worked to contain the blaze and assist those affected. Carney said air ambulance teams were deployed from Edmonton and Saskatoon, while medical personnel in Wainwright, Edmonton, Red Deer and Calgary treated casualties. The federal government also ordered flags on federal buildings to be flown at half-mast in honour of the deceased.
Canadian Forces Base Wainwright is a major army training facility used to prepare military personnel for operational duties. The base hosts exercises involving soldiers from different parts of Canada, making it an important component of the country’s military training system.
The full circumstances surrounding the fire remain under investigation. The Department of National Defence is working with civilian emergency services and local authorities to assess the incident and support affected personnel and their families. Officials have not yet released a complete account of what caused the blaze.
