PARIS – Wildfires continued to rage across France, Spain and Greece on Thursday as relentless heatwaves, drought and strong winds fueled new blazes, raising fears that Europe’s wildfire season could become one of its worst on record. Emergency officials warned that the threat is shifting eastward, placing more countries at risk as scorching temperatures persist across the continent.
France has made significant progress in containing the massive wildfire that devastated areas near Bordeaux, but firefighters remain on high alert as smaller fires continue to flare up in southeastern regions. The blaze scorched more than 42,000 hectares of land, forced the evacuation of around 220,000 people, and prompted authorities to investigate suspected arson after two individuals were arrested. Favorable weather has allowed tens of thousands of evacuees to begin returning home, although officials warned that hotspots remain and conditions could deteriorate if temperatures rise again.
In Spain, firefighters continue battling at least ten major wildfires despite improved weather helping contain some of the largest blazes. Authorities remain concerned that dry vegetation and forecast high temperatures could quickly reignite fires, particularly in central and southern parts of the country where thousands of hectares have already burned.
Meanwhile, Greece is facing one of its deadliest wildfire outbreaks this year. Fires on the island of Crete have killed three firefighters, destroyed homes and forests, and forced thousands of residents and tourists to evacuate, including by sea. Emergency crews remain deployed across several regions as strong winds continue to hamper containment efforts.
The European Union has mobilized firefighting aircraft, helicopters and emergency personnel to assist affected countries through its Civil Protection Mechanism. The bloc’s Emergency Response Coordination Centre said the wildfire threat is now moving east, with Italy, Greece and parts of Central Europe expected to face heightened risk in the coming weeks as another heatwave develops.
Scientists say the unprecedented wildfire season has been intensified by successive heatwaves following a wet winter and spring that produced abundant vegetation, which later dried under extreme temperatures. Europe is the world’s fastest-warming continent, with average temperatures this summer significantly above historical norms. Researchers say climate change has made prolonged heatwaves and severe wildfire conditions far more likely.
The widespread fires have already displaced hundreds of thousands of people, damaged homes, forests, vineyards and businesses, while smoke has affected air quality across several countries. Authorities have urged residents to avoid activities that could spark new fires, noting that the vast majority of wildfires are caused by human activity, whether accidental or deliberate.
Despite improving conditions in some areas, emergency officials warned that Europe is entering the peak of its wildfire season, with August historically bringing the highest fire risk. Experts cautioned that if prolonged heat and dry weather continue, additional countries across southern and central Europe could face major outbreaks before the summer ends.
Reports describing Europe as a continent that “may burn” reflect warnings from climate scientists and emergency officials that the combination of extreme heat, drought and dry vegetation could allow wildfires to spread across wider parts of the continent if weather conditions persist. However, authorities have not stated that the whole of Europe will burn. Instead, they have warned that wildfire risk is expanding geographically and that more countries could face severe fire conditions in the coming weeks.
