German authorities have classified the deadly vehicle attack near Berlin’s Christopher Street Day Pride celebration as an act of terrorism and launched an intensive nationwide manhunt for a 21-year-old suspect believed to have Islamist extremist ties after the assault left one person dead and at least 16 others injured.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said the attack, which occurred on the evening of July 25 near Tiergarten Park close to the Pride event, was carried out deliberately and is being investigated as an Islamist terrorist attack. Authorities identified the suspect as Abdul B., a German-born man of Lebanese background who was known to law enforcement for previous criminal offenses and alleged links to Islamist circles. Police warned that the suspect may be armed and dangerous and urged the public not to approach him if spotted.
According to police, a white minivan rammed into pedestrians gathered near the parade route before crashing into a tree. Authorities said at least one person was killed while 16 others sustained injuries, several of them serious. Some reports also indicated that investigators were examining whether several victims suffered stab wounds during the incident, although authorities have yet to release a definitive account of all injuries.
The attack prompted organizers to cancel the remaining events of Berlin’s Christopher Street Day celebration, one of Europe’s largest LGBTQ+ Pride festivals that attracts hundreds of thousands of participants each year. Police established an extensive security perimeter, appealed for witnesses to submit photos and videos, and deployed helicopters and specialized units as the search for the suspect continued.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz condemned the violence, describing it as an attack on Germany’s open and democratic society. Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner likewise denounced the incident, calling it a brutal assault on the city’s values of freedom, tolerance, and diversity. European leaders also expressed solidarity with the victims and the LGBTQ+ community.
Investigators said the suspect had previously attracted the attention of security authorities over suspected radicalization and attempts to establish contact with supporters of the Islamic State group. Officials are also investigating whether additional individuals may have assisted in planning or carrying out the attack.
The attack has renewed concerns about extremist violence in Germany, where authorities have faced a series of vehicle and knife attacks linked to Islamist extremism in recent years. It also comes as the country continues to debate security measures and counterterrorism policies ahead of upcoming regional elections.
