Israel ratifies Gaza ceasefire, sets timeline for hostage release

JERUSALEM/CAIRO — Israel’s government has ratified a ceasefire agreement with the Palestinian militant group Hamas, paving the way to halt hostilities in Gaza within 24 hours and begin the release of Israeli hostages within 72 hours.

The Israeli cabinet approved the deal early Friday morning, roughly a day after mediators announced the agreement. The accord provides for the release of Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners and outlines a phased withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza under U.S. President Donald Trump’s initiative to end the two-year war.

“The government has just now approved the framework for the release of all of the hostages – the living and the deceased,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s English-language X account stated.

The conflict, which has isolated Israel internationally and drawn in Iran, Yemen, and Lebanon, has tested U.S.-Israeli relations. President Trump has reportedly urged Netanyahu to finalize a deal as part of his broader peace plan.

Celebrations erupted across Israel and the Palestinian territories after the announcement of the most significant step yet toward ending two years of fighting that has claimed more than 67,000 Palestinian lives and left 1,200 Israelis dead following Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attacks.

Hamas’s exiled Gaza chief, Khalil Al-Hayya, said he had received guarantees from the United States and other mediators “that the war was over.”

An Israeli government spokesperson confirmed that the ceasefire would take effect within 24 hours of ratification, with hostages to be released within 72 hours afterward. Of the remaining hostages, 20 are believed to be alive, 26 are presumed dead, and the fate of two remains unknown. Hamas has cautioned that the recovery of bodies may take longer than the release of living captives.

Once implemented, the agreement will allow the flow of humanitarian aid, including food and medical supplies, into Gaza, where hundreds of thousands have been displaced and forced to live in tents after their homes were destroyed.

However, challenges remain. A Palestinian source said the list of prisoners to be released was still being finalized, as Hamas seeks the freedom of high-profile detainees and hundreds arrested during the Israeli assault. Further elements of Trump’s 20-point plan — including postwar governance in Gaza and the disarmament of Hamas are yet to be discussed.

Netanyahu also faces resistance within his coalition. Far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir warned he would move to topple the government if Hamas remains intact.

Despite lingering political tension, many on both sides expressed relief and hope. “Thank God for the ceasefire, the end of bloodshed and killing,” said Abdul Majeed Abd Rabbo in Khan Younis, southern Gaza. “All of the Gaza Strip is happy, all the Arab people, all of the world is happy with the ceasefire.”

In Tel Aviv’s Hostages Square, where families of captives have gathered for months, Einav Zaugauker — whose son Matan is among the last remaining hostages expressed overwhelming emotion. “I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe, I can’t explain what I’m feeling … it’s crazy,” she said.

Israeli strikes continued in Gaza on Thursday but with significantly fewer casualties, as local health authorities reported seven deaths in two separate attacks.

President Trump is expected to travel to the region on Sunday and may attend a signing ceremony in Egypt. Israeli Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana has invited him to address the legislature, an event that would mark the first speech by a U.S. president there since 2008.

The deal has received widespread international support and is being hailed as a major diplomatic achievement for Trump. If fully implemented, it would represent a breakthrough toward ending one of the Middle East’s deadliest conflicts.

Western and Arab nations met in Paris to discuss a postwar framework, including reconstruction aid and a proposed peacekeeping force. According to U.S. officials, Washington will deploy 200 troops as part of a multinational task force with no American boots on the ground in Gaza alongside forces from Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, and possibly the United Arab Emirates.

The Gaza conflict began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas-led militants attacked Israeli communities and a music festival, killing 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages. Israel’s ensuing military campaign has killed over 67,000 Palestinians and devastated much of the enclave.

Relief and celebration sweep Israel and Gaza as ceasefire and hostage deal announced

JERUSALEM/CAIRO — Joy and relief erupted across Israel and Gaza on Thursday after a ceasefire and hostage release deal was unveiled under the first phase of U.S. President Donald Trump’s initiative to end the devastating war in Gaza.

Both sides publicly endorsed the agreement and were expected to sign it around noon in the Egyptian resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh (0900 GMT), though there was no immediate confirmation that the signing had been completed.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said the ceasefire would take effect once approved by the Israeli government, which was set to convene following a security cabinet meeting scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Israel’s hostage coordinator, Gal Hirsch, noted that the list of Palestinian prisoners to be released was still being finalized.

Reports from Gaza indicated a series of air strikes in Gaza City around the expected signing time.

Under the deal, hostilities would cease, Israel would partially withdraw its forces from Gaza, and Hamas would release hostages taken during the attack that sparked the war, in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel. A source briefed on the agreement said Israeli troops were expected to begin withdrawing within 24 hours of the deal’s signing.

An Israeli official said that the release of the 20 Israeli hostages still believed to be alive in Gaza was anticipated by Sunday or Monday. Another 26 hostages have been declared dead in absentia, while the fate of two remains uncertain. Hamas reportedly indicated it may need time to recover bodies scattered across Gaza.

Scenes of celebration unfolded in both territories as news of the agreement spread.
In Gaza, where most of the 2 million residents have been displaced by months of bombardment, young men applauded in the rubble-strewn streets despite continuing air strikes.

“Thank God for the ceasefire, the end of bloodshed and killing,” said Abdul Majeed Abd Rabbo in Khan Younis, southern Gaza. “I am not the only one happy; all of the Gaza Strip is happy, all the Arab people, all of the world is happy with the ceasefire and the end of bloodshed.”

In Tel Aviv, Einav Zaugauker, whose son Matan is among the last remaining hostages, joined emotional celebrations in the so-called Hostages Square — a gathering point for families of those abducted during the Hamas assault two years ago.
“I can’t breathe, I can’t explain what I’m feeling … it’s crazy,” she said, illuminated by the red glow of a flare. “What do I say to him? What do I do? Hug and kiss him. Just tell him that I love him … It’s overwhelming this is the relief.”

Despite the breakthrough, residents reported that Israeli strikes on three Gaza City suburbs continued into Thursday morning. The Gaza Health Ministry said at least nine Palestinians were killed within the past 24 hours.

The deal was reached just one day after the second anniversary of Hamas’s cross-border attack on October 7, 2023, which killed 1,200 Israelis and led to Israel’s full-scale assault on Gaza a campaign that has since claimed more than 67,000 Palestinian lives, according to Gaza officials.

The Sharm el-Sheikh negotiations, mediated by Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey, produced the accord as the opening phase of a 20-point framework proposed by Trump. The U.S. president hailed it as a landmark diplomatic success and a first step toward Middle East reconciliation.

“All Parties will be treated fairly! This is a GREAT Day for the Arab and Muslim World, Israel, all surrounding Nations, and the United States of America… BLESSED ARE THE PEACEMAKERS!” Trump wrote on social media.

Netanyahu described the agreement as “a diplomatic success and a national and moral victory for the State of Israel,” though divisions persisted within his ruling coalition. Far-right ministers, including Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, opposed the truce, saying Hamas must be destroyed after the hostages’ return.

The pact drew broad international praise from Arab and Western governments after several failed ceasefire attempts.

The next stage of Trump’s plan envisions an international body, led by Trump and involving former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, to help administer post-war Gaza. Arab states supporting the plan insist it must pave the way toward a Palestinian state, an idea Netanyahu rejects. Hamas, for its part, opposes any foreign governance over Gaza and rejects Blair’s involvement.

While the ceasefire offered a long-awaited respite, unresolved questions remain, particularly Gaza’s future governance and the political fate of Hamas. Still, for many Israelis and Palestinians, the announcement marked the first glimpse of hope after years of unrelenting bloodshed.

October supermoon lights up skies, still visible in the Philippines until October 9

NEW YORK — The first supermoon of 2025 illuminated skies around the world on the night of October 6, peaking in brightness during the morning of October 7 (Philippine time). The phenomenon, visible across the Philippines, marked the first in a series of three supermoons this year, according to NASA and the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

A supermoon occurs when a full moon coincides with the moon’s closest point to Earth in its orbit, making it appear up to 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than the faintest full moon of the year.

“It’s not really very unusual,” said Derrick Pitts, chief astronomer at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. He explained that while anyone can view a supermoon without special equipment, “if you go out and just look at the moon when it’s very high in the sky, there is nothing relative to it to give you an idea of how big it looks.”

During this event, the moon came within 224,600 miles (361,459 kilometers) of Earth. Skywatchers in the Philippines were able to enjoy the bright lunar display from the evening of October 6 until dawn on October 7.

According to PAGASA, the moon remains bright and nearly full until October 9, giving Filipinos more time to witness the celestial beauty. The agency stated that the supermoon continues to appear large and luminous under clear skies and recommended open areas with minimal light pollution for the optimal viewing experience.

For those who missed this week’s show, NASA said two more supermoons will appear this year one on the night of November 5 and another on December 5, both visible from the Philippines.

The 2025 lunar calendar will continue to offer celestial highlights next year, including two eclipses in 2026 a total lunar eclipse in March, visible across much of Asia, including the Philippines, and a partial lunar eclipse in August, visible across the Americas, Africa, and Europe.

• Sen. Joel Villanueva
• Sen. Jinggoy Estrada
• Former Sen. Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr.
• Mayor Maria Lourdes “Nancy” Binay Angeles
• Commissioner Mario G. Lipana at Marilou Laurio-Lipana
• Undersecretary Trygve L. Olaivar
• Carlene Villa
• Maynard Ngu
• Cong. Roman Romulo
• Cong. James “Jojo” Ang
• Cong. Patrick Michael “PM” Vargas
• Cong. Juan Carlos “Arjo” Atayde
• Cong. Nicanor “Nikki” Briones
• Cong. Marcelino “Marcy” Teodoro
• Cong. Florida “Rida” Robes
• Cong. Eleandro Jesus Madrona

• Cong. Reynante “Reynan” Arogancia
• Former Cong. Marvin Rillo
• Cong. Teodorico “Teodoro” Haresco Jr.
• Cong. Antonieta Eudela
• Cong. Dean Assistio
• Cong. Marivic Co-Pilar
• District Engr. Loida Busa
• “Bogs” Magalong
• District Engr. Ramon Devanadera
• District Engr. Johnny Protesta Jr.
• District Engr. Arturo Gonzales Jr.

“I think she better ask some of her colleagues… some of her colleagues are saying na ‘bakit naghe-hearing ay mayroong hearing ang ICI.

Trump names Lee Lipton as new US ambassador to the Philippines

WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump has nominated Lee Lipton, a former businessman from Florida and the current interim Permanent Representative to the U.S. Mission to the Organization of American States (OAS), as the next ambassador to the Philippines, the White House announced Thursday (Wednesday in Washington).

Lipton will replace MaryKay Carlson, who has served as Washington’s envoy to Manila since 2022. His appointment is subject to confirmation by the U.S. Senate.

Lipton is the first non-career American diplomat to be nominated as ambassador to the Philippines in recent history.

The Philippines remains one of the United States’ closest allies in Asia, with bipartisan support continuing under both the Biden and Trump administrations. In March, U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth made his first official visit to the Philippines and Japan, reaffirming Washington’s commitment to strengthening deterrence against Chinese aggression in the region.

Philippine Ambassador to the U.S. Jose Manuel Romualdez welcomed Lipton’s nomination, describing it as a “good indication” given Lipton’s close relationship with President Trump. “Trump sees the Philippines as important to him personally,” Romualdez told GMA News Online.

According to the U.S. State Department website, Lipton “manages staff operations, financial resources, and interagency coordination to advance U.S. foreign policy priorities in the Western Hemisphere” in his current role at the OAS. His profile adds that he supports “U.S. engagement on a range of regional challenges, including the deteriorating security situation in Haiti, and efforts to counter malign influence, particularly from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) within the Inter-American System.”

Before joining the diplomatic corps, Lipton built a successful career in the private sector. He founded and led an apparel business in New York City, managing the design, manufacturing, marketing, and distribution of licensed collections for global brands such as Calvin Klein, St. John Knits, and Guess.

After selling his company to a publicly traded firm, he entered the hospitality industry, owning several oceanfront restaurants that remain among the most popular dining establishments in Palm Beach County, Florida.

“Mr. Lipton brings over 25 years of private sector experience to his diplomatic role, offering a strong business-to-business perspective to U.S. engagement at the Organization of American States,” his official profile stated. It added that his “results-driven mindset and a strategic approach, shaped by decades of entrepreneurial leadership, informs his work at the U.S. Mission to the Organization of American States, where he champions economic engagement, institutional efficiency, and multilateral cooperation in support of regional stability and prosperity,” it added.

Lipton holds a bachelor’s degree from Bryant University. He and his wife of 45 years have two sons.

Israel, Hamas agree on first phase of Trump-backed peace plan to pause fighting and free hostages

WASHINGTON — Israel and Hamas have reached the “first phase” of a peace plan aimed at halting hostilities and releasing hostages and prisoners, U.S. President Donald Trump announced Wednesday, describing it as the most significant breakthrough in months of conflict.

“This means that ALL of the Hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw their Troops to an agreed upon line as the first steps toward a Strong, Durable, and Everlasting Peace,” Trump wrote on social media. “All Parties will be treated fairly!”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed the development, posting, “With God’s help we will bring them all home.” Hamas, in a separate statement, said the deal includes the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza, the entry of humanitarian aid, and an exchange of hostages and prisoners.

According to people familiar with the matter, Hamas is expected to release all 20 living hostages this weekend, while Israel will begin withdrawing its forces from most of Gaza.

The agreement, finalized in Egypt after several days of negotiations, represents the most substantial progress since a January–February deal that saw Israeli hostages freed in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.

It remains unclear whether the parties made headway on more contentious issues, such as Hamas’ potential demilitarization, a key U.S. demand, or the future governance of Gaza.

The war began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched a deadly attack on Israel that killed about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and took 251 hostages. Israel’s subsequent military response has left tens of thousands of Palestinians dead, devastated much of Gaza, and reshaped global diplomatic dynamics.

Trump earlier hinted at optimism for a breakthrough, saying he was considering a trip to the Middle East “within days.” During the same event, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reportedly handed Trump a note on White House stationery reading, “You need to approve a Truth Social post soon so you can announce the deal first.” Truth Social is Trump’s preferred social media platform.

Moments later, Trump told attendees, “We’re very close to a deal in the Middle East.”
