“For everyone who has successfully registered, your National ID is just a few taps away. We encourage you to immediately access your Digital National ID, a reliable and secure valid ID that can be conveniently presented in transactions through your smartphone,” pahayag ni PSA Undersecretary Claire Dennis S. Mapa, National Statistician at Civil Registrar General.

“Since we first introduced the Digital National ID, we have seen how it empowered more and more Filipinos in transactions, enabling their access to various services. We implore our fellow kababayans who do not have their Digital National ID yet—or previously downloaded a copy—to access it now via the eGovPH app and enjoy the advantages of being a registered person,” dagdag ni Mapa.

Israeli minister says West Bank settlement plan will block Palestinian statehood

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said on Thursday that a plan to build more than 3,000 homes in a long-delayed settlement project in the occupied West Bank would “bury the idea of a Palestinian state.”

The project, known as E1, is located between Jerusalem and the Maale Adumim settlement and has been frozen for decades due to international opposition. Critics say construction there would sever the West Bank from occupied East Jerusalem, a territory Palestinians claim as the capital of a future state.

Smotrich argued the project would prevent Palestinian statehood, insisting “there is nothing to recognise and no one to recognise.” He described the plan as “Zionism at its best — building, settling and strengthening our sovereignty in the Land of Israel.”

Settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem are widely considered illegal under international law. Around 700,000 Israeli settlers live in about 160 settlements across the territories, according to the anti-settlement group Peace Now.

The announcement comes as several countries, including the UK and France, signal their intention to recognise a Palestinian state in the coming months. Smotrich dismissed the moves, telling the BBC, “It’s not going to happen. There will be no state to recognise.”

International reaction was swift. The United States said a stable West Bank was vital to Israel’s security and regional peace, while the United Nations and the European Union urged Israel not to move forward. UK Foreign Minister David Lammy called the proposal “a flagrant breach of international law,” and Germany said it “strongly rejects” the plan. Turkey also condemned the decision, saying it disregards Palestinian territorial integrity.

Peace Now accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government of deepening annexation efforts, warning that settlement expansion would block any two-state solution. The Palestinian foreign ministry denounced the plan as part of “genocide, displacement, and annexation.”

The E1 project involves 3,401 housing units and has been frozen for two decades, as its development is seen as a decisive barrier to Palestinian statehood by dividing the West Bank into disconnected areas.

Since the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel, restrictions and pressure on Palestinians in the West Bank have intensified, with Israeli officials justifying the measures as security-related. Most of the international community maintains that settlements are illegal under international law, a position reinforced by a 2023 advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice.

Samantala, sinabi ni Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp.

Trump fails to secure Ukraine peace deal after meeting with Putin in Alaska

JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska. President Donald Trump left a high-profile meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday without reaching an agreement to end the war in Ukraine, despite promising early in his term to stop the conflict.

“There’s no deal until there’s a deal,” Trump said, after Putin claimed they had reached an “understanding” and warned Europe not to undermine progress. The U.S. president added that he would brief Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders on the talks.

Seven months into his return to the White House, Trump has pushed Ukraine to negotiate while reducing some U.S. military aid to Kyiv. But he failed to persuade Putin to pause the fighting, as Russian forces continued to gain ground.

The meeting at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson began with a red-carpet welcome for Putin, complete with military aircraft flying overhead. Trump offered both threats of harsher sanctions and a warm reception, but no concrete results emerged. Instead, Putin gained rare international recognition after years of Western attempts to isolate him.

Both leaders skipped questions at their planned joint news conference, fueling speculation that discussions had fallen short. Trump later told Fox News that it was a “very warm meeting” but acknowledged, “It’s not a done deal at all.”

Putin praised Trump’s “friendly” tone and called for restoring cooperation between the two countries. He said the talks could serve as a reference point for solving the Ukraine conflict and improving U.S.-Russia relations.

Zelenskyy, excluded from the negotiations, posted a video message before the meeting urging Washington to maintain a strong stance. European leaders have also voiced concern that Trump’s approach risks sidelining Ukraine’s interests while giving Moscow more time on the battlefield.

The war, now in its fourth year, shows no sign of ending. Russia continues to reject ceasefire proposals tied to halting Western arms supplies, while Ukraine struggles to repel advances along its 600-mile front line.

Trump closed the meeting by thanking Putin and suggesting they could meet again soon, even hinting at a possible trip to Moscow.

Plastic treaty talks extended as nations struggle over scope and ambition

GENEVA. Negotiations to finalize the world’s first legally binding treaty on plastic pollution stretched into overtime on Thursday, as delegates failed to bridge deep divisions on the final day of scheduled talks at the United Nations.

The International Negotiating Committee, mandated by the UN Environment Assembly to craft the treaty, adjourned the session to Friday after hours of deadlock. Countries advocating for a comprehensive pact, including Panama, Kenya, Britain and the European Union, expressed frustration that key provisions addressing the full life cycle of plastics and health impacts had been removed from the latest draft.

Oil-producing nations resisted limits on virgin plastic production from petroleum, coal and gas, while others pushed for strict caps and tighter controls on hazardous chemicals. Panama described the Wednesday draft as “repulsive” and demanded a complete rewrite. Saudi Arabia insisted that no agreement could be reached until the treaty’s scope was clearly defined.

More than 1,000 delegates have gathered in Geneva for this sixth round of talks, following a stalled meeting last year in South Korea. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development warns that without intervention, plastic production could triple by 2060, worsening ocean pollution, health risks and climate change.

While industry representatives such as America’s Plastic Makers voiced optimism, they cautioned against any deal that restricts plastic production. Environmental advocates, meanwhile, stressed that a weak agreement would be worse than no treaty at all.

The outcome of the extended talks will determine whether countries can unite behind an ambitious, science-driven framework or settle for a diluted accord that fails to curb the escalating global plastics crisis.

US, Philippines weigh more missile deployments amid South China Sea tensions

MANILA. The United States and the Philippines are in talks over the possible deployment of additional missile launchers in the country to bolster deterrence against aggression in the South China Sea and other Asian security flashpoints, according to Philippine Ambassador to Washington Jose Manuel Romualdez. No final decision has been reached.

The discussions follow recent U.S. military activities in the Philippines, including the delivery of a Typhoon mid-range missile system during joint exercises in April last year and the deployment of an anti-ship missile launcher to Batanes in April this year. Batanes sits just across the sea from Taiwan, a key area of strategic concern.

China has protested the presence of U.S. missile systems, warning they threaten regional stability and urging the Philippines to remove them, a request rejected by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s administration. Romualdez said the potential installation of more Navy Marine Expeditionary Ship Interdiction System (NMESIS) launchers is being considered for coastal areas facing the South China Sea and other outlying regions.

“This is part of the strong U.S. and Philippines defense partnership,” Romualdez told The Associated Press.

Speaking at a trade and investment conference in Manila alongside Foreign Secretary Theresa Lazaro, Romualdez urged U.S. companies to invest in Philippine industries ranging from energy and telecommunications to infrastructure and naval shipbuilding. He stressed that economic strength enhances the country’s ability to be a capable defense ally.

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, during his visit to Manila in March, underscored that the Trump administration aims to strengthen deterrence against global threats, including China’s assertive actions in the South China Sea. He emphasized that peace would be maintained “through strength.”

The South China Sea remains a hotspot, with overlapping claims from the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, Taiwan, and China, which claims nearly the entire waterway. Confrontations between Chinese and Philippine forces have increased, including a recent collision between Chinese navy and coast guard ships while blocking a Philippine vessel near Scarborough Shoal.

On Wednesday, the U.S. deployed two warships in a “freedom of navigation” operation in the disputed waters, underscoring the importance of maintaining open shipping lanes for global trade worth trillions of dollars annually.

“Freedom of navigation is essential for commerce, lives, and livelihoods,” U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines MaryKay Carlson said.

Amante

MAYNILA. Inaprubahan at isinulong sa Kongreso ni Cong. Loreto “Amben” Amante ng Ikatlong Distrito ng Laguna ang House Bill No. 3500, o ang panukalang “An Act Granting Monthly Honorarium, Civil Service Eligibility and Security of Tenure to Every Barangay Nutrition Scholar (BNS), Amending PD 1569.”

Trump says Putin ready for Ukraine peace talks, second summit may include Zelenskiy

WASHINGTON/MOSCOW/KYIV. U.S. President Donald Trump said he believes Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to end the war in Ukraine, but suggested that a lasting peace deal would likely require a second meeting involving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

Speaking to reporters at the White House ahead of Friday’s U.S.–Russia summit in Anchorage, Alaska, Trump said, “I think President Putin will make peace, I think President Zelenskiy will make peace. We’ll see if they get along.” He downplayed expectations of a ceasefire from the upcoming talks, describing them as a prelude to broader negotiations that could involve European leaders.

Putin, preparing for the summit, told senior ministers that the U.S. was making “energetic and sincere efforts” to stop the conflict and establish long-term peace. He signaled that nuclear arms control would be on the agenda, along with discussions on improving Russia–U.S. economic ties.

Western officials have expressed concern that Moscow could use offers on arms control or trade to divert attention from Ukraine. An Eastern European official warned that Russia’s goal was to avoid new sanctions and have existing ones lifted.

Ukraine and its European allies have been working to ensure that no U.S.–Russia deal leaves Kyiv vulnerable. Russia currently controls about a fifth of Ukrainian territory, and officials fear a settlement could cement those gains.

Friday’s meeting will be the first Russia–U.S. summit since June 2021 and comes at a critical point in the war, which has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Trump has threatened “severe consequences” and potential new sanctions if the talks fail, but said it will be up to Putin and Zelenskiy to negotiate the terms of any deal. A joint or separate press conference is expected after the summit.
