This giant gas planet is as light and airy as cotton candy

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. In a remarkable astronomical discovery, scientists have identified a planet larger than Jupiter yet astonishingly light and fluffy, akin to cotton candy.

An international team of astronomers reported Tuesday that the exoplanet, named WASP-193b, has an exceedingly low density relative to its size. This stands in stark contrast to the gas giants within our solar system — Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune — which are significantly denser.

“The planet is basically super fluffy,” said lead author Khalid Barkaoui of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in a statement. “It’s made mostly of light gases rather than solids.”

WASP-193b, confirmed last year, presents a unique opportunity for studying unconventional planetary formation and evolution. Determining its consistency required extensive observation with ground-based telescopes. According to the study published in Nature Astronomy, the planet is believed to be composed primarily of hydrogen and helium.

Located approximately 1,200 light-years away, WASP-193b is the second-lightest exoplanet discovered to date, considering its dimensions and mass. For reference, one light-year equals 5.8 trillion miles.

This discovery highlights the diversity of planetary systems and offers valuable insights into the complexities of planetary science.

Senado, naglabas ng arrest warrant laban kay suspended Mayor Alice Guo at 7 iba pa

MAYNILA.

“This committee is ordering the arrest of the persons cited in contempt to be submitted to the Senate President for his signature,” ani Hontiveros.

The tragedy has left friends and colleagues of John Hunt in deep shock. ITV horse racing commentator Matt Chapman expressed his condolences on X, saying, “Impossible to comprehend the pain. Just know we are all here for you John. We love you pal – racing loves you.”

The community and law enforcement continue to work together in hopes of swiftly bringing the suspect to justice.

Israeli military commands the evacuation of Gaza City, a primary target in its conflict with Hamas

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip. The Israeli military urged all Palestinians to leave Gaza City and head south on Wednesday, continuing a fresh offensive across the embattled territory’s north, south, and center that has killed dozens of people in the past 48 hours.

The increased military activity coincided with U.S., Egyptian, and Qatari mediators meeting with Israeli officials in Doha to push for a cease-fire deal with Gaza’s Hamas militant group.

Israel claims it is targeting Hamas fighters regrouping in various parts of Gaza, nine months into a devastating offensive. However, recent heavy strikes across the territory may also aim to pressure Hamas in the cease-fire talks.

Months ago, Israel ordered residents of northern Gaza, including Gaza City, to flee south as it operated in the area. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have remained in the hard-hit north, with many having nowhere to go. Most of Gaza’s 2.3 million people are crowded into squalid tent camps in central and southern Gaza.

Ground troops have recently entered parts of Gaza City, causing thousands of Palestinians to flee from shelling and airstrikes. Last week, the military ordered evacuations from eastern and central parts of the city.

Israel informed Gaza residents of the evacuation order by dropping leaflets urging “all those in Gaza City” to take two “safe routes” south to the area around Deir al-Balah. Gaza City, the leaflets said, will “remain a dangerous combat zone.”

For the second straight night, Israeli strikes in central Gaza early Wednesday hit four houses in Deir al-Balah and the nearby Nuseirat refugee camp, killing 20 Palestinians. Among the dead were six children and three women, according to al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, where the casualties were taken. An Associated Press reporter counted the bodies. The house hit in Deir al-Balah was inside the “humanitarian safe zone” where Israel has told Palestinians to seek refuge.

The overnight bombardment occurred hours after Israeli warplanes struck a school entrance sheltering displaced families outside Khan Younis in the south. The toll from that strike rose to 31 people killed, including eight children, and over 50 wounded, officials at the nearby Nasser Hospital said Wednesday.

Footage aired by Al-Jazeera showed children playing soccer in the schoolyard when a sudden explosion shook the area, prompting shouts of “a strike, a strike!”

The Israeli army said the airstrike near the school and reports of civilian casualties were under review, claiming it targeted a Hamas militant involved in the Oct. 7 attack on Israel, though it provided no immediate evidence. The military blames civilian deaths on Hamas for fighting in dense, urban areas, but rarely comments on individual strikes that often kill women and children.

In nine months of bombardment and offensives in Gaza, Israel has killed over 38,200 people and wounded more than 88,000, according to the territory’s Health Ministry, which does not differentiate between combatants and civilians. Nearly the entire population has been driven from their homes, many displaced multiple times, with hundreds of thousands packed into sweltering tent camps.

Israel’s onslaught was triggered by Hamas’ Oct. 7 cross-border raid, where militants killed 1,200 people in southern Israel, mostly civilians, and took roughly 250 hostages. About 120 are still captive, with about a third presumed dead.

Large parts of Gaza City and nearby urban areas in northern Gaza have been flattened or heavily damaged by previous Israeli assaults, with much of the population fleeing earlier in the war. However, several hundred thousand people are believed to remain in the north.

Israel’s new ground assault in Gaza’s largest city has prompted a “dangerously chaotic” exodus, according to the U.N., with people scattering in multiple directions, unsure where to go. Some have fled to other parts of the north. The new Israeli military leaflets encouraged a mass movement south to the purported “humanitarian zone,” promising that people leaving Gaza City on the defined routes would not be stopped at Israeli checkpoints. Many Palestinians fear arrest or humiliation by troops at the checkpoints.

After Israel on Monday called for evacuations from eastern and central parts of Gaza City, staff at two hospitals — Al-Ahli and the Patients Friends Association Hospital — rushed to move patients and shut down, the United Nations said.

The Episcopal Church in the Middle East, which operates Al-Ahli, said the hospital was “compelled to close by the Israeli army.” The Israeli military said Tuesday that it told hospitals and other medical facilities in Gaza City they did not need to evacuate.

Hospitals in Gaza have often evacuated preemptively at any sign of possible Israeli military action, fearing raids. In the past nine months, Israeli troops have attacked at least eight hospitals, causing the deaths of patients and medical workers and massive destruction to facilities and equipment. Israel claims Hamas uses hospitals for military purposes, though it has provided only limited evidence.

Only 13 of Gaza’s 36 hospitals are functioning, and those only partially, according to the United Nations’ humanitarian office.

International mediators are making a concerted effort to push through a proposed deal for a cease-fire and the release of hostages.

Israel and Hamas had appeared to narrow gaps recently, but obstacles remain, even after Hamas agreed to relent on its key demand that Israel commit to ending the war as part of any agreement.

Hamas still wants mediators to guarantee that negotiations conclude with a permanent cease-fire. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has insisted he will not sign any deal forcing Israel to stop its Gaza campaign without eliminating Hamas. On Monday, Hamas accused Netanyahu of “putting more obstacles in the way of negotiations,” including operations in Gaza City.

An Egyptian official said Abbas Kamel, head of Egypt’s General Intelligence Service, went to Doha to join discussions over the deal, with U.S. and Israeli officials also attending. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the press. A day earlier, CIA Director William Burns, who has led American mediation, met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi in Cairo.

Over 85% of Israelis support a full or temporary cease-fire deal, according to a poll from the Israel Democracy Institute, a Jerusalem-based think tank. The survey of 850 Israelis, both Hebrew and Arabic-speaking, had a margin of error of 3.85%.

Far-right Israeli politicians — on whom Netanyahu relies to keep his governing coalition — remain steadfastly against a deal. Earlier this week, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich brandished a photo of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar making a “V-for-victory” gesture, and wrote on X that a deal will allow “murderous terrorists with blood on their hands to continue to murder Jews.”

National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, also part of the extreme right, has been pressing for a spot on Netanyahu’s War Cabinet, which could give him greater power to scuttle a deal. For leverage, he has been exploiting political infighting over religious issues with ultra-Orthodox parties, threatening to weaken Netanyahu’s coalition.

Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet are officially divorced after years of separation

LOS ANGELES. Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet are officially divorced. A Los Angeles County judge finalized the dissolution of their marriage on Tuesday, concluding the legal process that began after their separation several years ago.

Momoa and Bonet were married for over seven years and had been a couple for 12 years before tying the knot. Bonet, legally known as Lilakoi Moon, filed for divorce in January. The documents revealed that the couple had been separated since October 7, 2020, although they only made their separation public in 2022.

The divorce proceedings were swift and amicable. Both parties agreed on the division of their assets and decided that neither would receive financial support. They will share joint custody of their two children, a 16-year-old daughter, and a 15-year-old son.

Momoa, 44, gained fame for his roles in the “Aquaman” movies and the TV series “Game of Thrones.” Bonet, 56, is best known for her work on “The Cosby Show,” its spinoff “A Different World,” and films such as “High Fidelity” and “Enemy of the State.”

This was Momoa’s first marriage. He has recently shared on social media that he is dating actor Adria Arjona, known for her roles in “Hit Man” and “Father of the Bride.”

For Bonet, this marks her second divorce. She was previously married to musician Lenny Kravitz, with whom she has another daughter, actor Zoë Kravitz.

Rare voice box transplant helped a cancer patient speak again in a pioneering study

0

WASHINGTON. A Massachusetts man has regained his voice after surgeons removed his cancerous larynx and replaced it with a donated one in a groundbreaking medical procedure. This rare voice box transplant, performed at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona, marks only the third such operation in the United States and is part of a pioneering clinical trial aimed at extending the procedure to more patients, including those with cancer.

Marty Kedian, 59, is now able to speak again after the transplant, which took place four months ago. “People need to keep their voice,” Kedian told The Associated Press, still hoarse but able to hold an hour-long conversation. “I want people to know this can be done.” Kedian became emotional recalling the first time he phoned his 82-year-old mother post-surgery: “and she could hear me. … That was important to me, to talk to my mother.”

The trial, led by Dr. David Lott, chair of head and neck surgery at Mayo Clinic, is small, with only nine more participants planned. The goal is to refine the complex transplant process, making it accessible to more individuals who have lost their larynx due to cancer, the most common cause of larynx removal.

The larynx, or voice box, is crucial for breathing, swallowing, and speaking. It houses the vocal cords, which vibrate to produce speech. Kedian is only the third person in the U.S. to receive a total larynx transplant, with previous cases due to injuries.

The transplant involved a 21-hour surgery by six surgeons. They removed Kedian’s cancerous larynx and transplanted the donor larynx along with necessary tissues such as the thyroid and parathyroid glands, pharynx, and upper part of the trachea. They also connected critical nerves to enable swallowing and vocal cord movement.

Kedian’s journey began a decade ago when he was diagnosed with a rare laryngeal cartilage cancer. He underwent numerous surgeries and eventually needed a tracheostomy tube to breathe and swallow, severely limiting his ability to speak. Despite the challenges, Kedian resisted the complete removal of his larynx to maintain his voice for reading bedtime stories to his granddaughter.

His determination led him to the Mayo study, where Dr. Lott deemed him a suitable candidate due to his slow-growing cancer and pre-existing use of antirejection drugs for a kidney transplant. After a 10-month search, a suitable donor was found.

Three weeks post-surgery, Kedian spoke his first words, “hello,” and has since relearned to swallow, progressing from applesauce to hamburgers. He is now looking forward to returning to a normal life in Massachusetts, with plans to remove his tracheostomy tube.

Kedian’s successful transplant offers hope for more patients to regain their voice and quality of life. “Every day it’s getting better,” he said, cherishing his beloved Boston accent.

A Massachusetts man can speak again after surgeons removed his cancerous voice box and replaced it with a donated one, a pioneering move. Marty Kedian is only the third patient in the U.S. ever to undergo a larynx transplant — the first with active cancer — and one of a handful worldwide.

STO. TOMAS, Batangas.

“We have approved to endorse the application of the National Shrine of Padre Pio into an international shrine,” ayon sa ulat ng CBCP News.

“We are really convinced there is a need for Rome to recognize it is an international shrine because of the strong devotion to Santo Padre Pio,” sabi ng Arsobispo.

Explosion of confiscated fireworks rocks southern Philippines, injuring 27

ZAMBOANGA CITY. A powerful explosion of confiscated illegal fireworks injured at least 27 people, including 19 police and government personnel, in Zamboanga on Monday afternoon. The blast caused extensive damage to nearby houses, hotels, and even the international airport, officials reported on Tuesday.

Two victims are in serious condition at a hospital in Zamboanga, prompting Mayor John Dalipe to launch an investigation into the incident. The explosion occurred during a planned controlled detonation by police ordnance experts near a marine firing range.

Police were piling the fireworks, which had been doused with water, for a controlled detonation when the large heap unexpectedly exploded. The blast shattered glass windows up to three kilometers (nearly two miles) away, according to officials and witnesses.

The passenger terminal at Zamboanga International Airport, located about two kilometers (more than a mile) from the explosion site, sustained minor damage. However, no injuries or flight delays were reported, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines.

The fireworks had been confiscated from a warehouse in Zamboanga City, where an accidental explosion on June 29 killed five people and injured several others. Authorities had conducted two previous controlled destructions of the fireworks without incident.

As the investigation unfolds, Zamboanga officials aim to understand why the controlled destruction went awry and to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Desperate search for survivors in deadly Indonesian landslide

0

JAKARTA, Indonesia. Rescue workers in Indonesia are frantically digging through tons of mud and rubble in search of dozens of missing people after a devastating landslide struck an unauthorized gold mining area on Sulawesi Island, killing at least 23 individuals.

The disaster occurred on Sunday in the remote and hilly village of Bone Bolango, where over 100 villagers were scouring for grains of gold. Tons of mud cascaded down the surrounding hills, burying their makeshift camps. Heriyanto, head of the provincial Search and Rescue Office, said, “Improved weather allowed us to recover more bodies.” Heriyanto, like many Indonesians, goes by a single name.

As of Tuesday, rescue teams had recovered 23 bodies, including three women and a 4-year-old boy. Heriyanto’s office reported that 66 villagers managed to escape the landslide, 23 were rescued alive, and 18 of them sustained injuries. Around 35 people remain missing.

National Disaster Management Agency spokesperson Abdul Muhari attributed the landslide to torrential rains that had battered the mountainous district since Saturday. The rains triggered the landslide and broke an embankment, causing floods that submerged houses up to their roofs in five villages within Bone Bolango, part of the mountainous Gorontalo province. Nearly 300 houses were affected, and over 1,000 people fled for safety.

Authorities have deployed more than 200 rescuers, including police and military personnel, equipped with heavy machinery. However, the rescue operation faces significant challenges due to ongoing heavy rains, unstable soil, and the rugged, forested terrain. Local rescue official Afifuddin Ilahude warned, “With many missing and some remote areas still unreachable, the death toll is likely to rise.” Sniffer dogs have been brought in to aid the search efforts.

Videos released by the National Search and Rescue Agency depict rescue personnel using farm tools and their bare hands to extract mud-caked bodies from the thick mud, placing them in black bags for transport to burial sites.

Monsoon rains frequently cause landslides and flash floods in Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands where millions reside in mountainous or floodplain areas. Informal mining operations are widespread in the country, providing a precarious livelihood to thousands who work in highly dangerous conditions. These miners face hazards such as landslides, flooding, tunnel collapses, and exposure to toxic substances like mercury and cyanide, often with little to no protective equipment.

Indonesia’s last major mining-related accident occurred in April 2022, when a landslide hit an illegal gold mine in North Sumatra’s Mandailing Natal district, killing 12 women searching for gold. In February 2019, a makeshift wooden structure at an illegal gold mine in North Sulawesi province collapsed due to shifting soil and numerous mining holes, burying and killing more than 40 people.

As rescue efforts continue in Bone Bolango, the community and the nation mourn the tragic loss of life, hoping for a swift recovery of the missing and a long-term solution to prevent such disasters in the future.
