World court orders Israel to halt military assault on Gaza’s Rafah

THE HAGUE. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Friday ordered Israel to immediately cease its military assault on Rafah, a city in southern Gaza. This decision comes in response to South Africa’s case accusing Israel of genocide.

Reading the ruling, ICJ President Nawaf Salam stated that the situation in Gaza had worsened since the court previously directed Israel to improve conditions. He affirmed that conditions warranted a new emergency order. “The state of Israel shall (…) immediately halt its military offensive, and any other action in the Rafah governorate, which may inflict on the Palestinian group in Gaza conditions of life that could bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part,” Salam declared.

The court’s order also mandates Israel to open the Rafah crossing with Egypt to facilitate humanitarian aid and to grant access to investigators. Israel must report back on its compliance within one month.

The ruling was adopted by a 13-2 vote, with dissent from judges representing Uganda and Israel. This decision follows a request from South Africa made just a week earlier, as part of their broader accusation of genocide against Israel.

While the ICJ is the highest U.N. body for resolving disputes between states and its rulings are binding, they have been ignored in the past due to the court’s lack of enforcement powers.

Outside the court, a small group of pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered, waving flags and playing music advocating for a free Palestine.

Israel has dismissed the genocide accusations as unfounded, asserting that its military operations in Gaza are acts of self-defense aimed at Hamas militants. An Israeli government spokesperson reiterated before the ruling, “No power on Earth will stop Israel from protecting its citizens and going after Hamas in Gaza.”

Israel launched its offensive on Rafah earlier this month, displacing hundreds of thousands of Palestinians. The city, situated on Gaza’s southern border, is a crucial entry point for aid. International organizations have warned that the Israeli operation has cut off the enclave, raising the risk of famine.

South Africa’s legal team argued for emergency measures to ensure the survival of the Palestinian people. This decision against Israel may increase diplomatic pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.

In a related development, the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) announced applications for arrest warrants against Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and Hamas leaders, accusing them of crimes including extermination and deliberately attacking civilians. Israel has strongly denied these charges and called on its allies to reject the court’s actions.

South Africa’s broader case at the ICJ accuses Israel of orchestrating a state-led genocide against Palestinians. The court has not yet ruled on this substantive accusation, which may take years to resolve, but has previously rejected Israel’s attempts to dismiss the case.

Red flag at iba pang senyales, paano haharapin?

May lalaban kay Kapitan. Bago. Sariwa. Sariwa rin ang kaisipan. Babae. Pinakamahalaga: mabait daw, matulungin daw.

Memes here and there, everywhere. Millions of nasty written and verbal comments about her, about what she remembers, about what she tries and tries to forget.

Parating tamang sabihin at ipaalala, “Public office is a public trust.” Mamamayang may pakialam.

Simpleng pamumuhay sa farm nga ba? Bakit may sports utility vehicles, pick-up trucks, dump trucks?

May pagbabalanse. Kabataan, may pag-asa pa.

Sige lang. Tanong lang.

Spinal surgeries required for several injured passengers on turbulence-hit Singapore Airlines flight

BANGKOK. Several of the seriously injured passengers from a turbulence-hit Singapore Airlines flight will require spinal surgery, a Bangkok hospital announced on Thursday. The incident, which occurred earlier this week, resulted in severe injuries for many onboard.

The turbulence struck the Boeing 777 as it flew from London’s Heathrow Airport to Singapore on Tuesday, causing chaos in the cabin. Items and passengers were violently thrown around, leading to significant injuries. A 73-year-old British man died, possibly from a heart attack, while 20 people remain in intensive care.

The hospital director, Adinun Kittiratanapaibool, assured during a news conference that none of the ICU patients are in life-threatening condition. These include nationals from Britain, Malaysia, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, New Zealand, and the Philippines.

Passengers recounted their experiences of “sheer terror” during the event. Malaysian Amelia Lim, 43, described the scene as horrific, with injured individuals bleeding and lying motionless on the floor. “I was so afraid … I could see so many individuals on the floor, they were all bleeding,” Lim told the Malay Mail.

Thai authorities noted that the turbulence led to a rapid descent of 6,000 feet (about 1,800 meters) within three minutes. The cause of the severe turbulence remains unclear, but the flight was diverted to Thailand following the incident.

Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital, where most of the 104 injured were treated, reported that 22 patients sustained spinal or spinal cord injuries, while others suffered from skull or brain injuries, and damage to bones or internal organs. Seventeen surgeries have already been performed, including nine spinal surgeries.

The hospital is collaborating with local medical specialists to manage the influx of patients. Hospital director Adinun explained that it is still too early to determine if any patients will suffer permanent paralysis.

On Wednesday morning, Singapore Airlines arranged a special flight to transport 143 uninjured or lightly injured passengers to Singapore.

Experts highlight that turbulence, particularly clear air turbulence, poses significant risks. According to the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, turbulence accounted for 37.6% of all accidents on larger commercial airlines from 2009 to 2018. Anita Mendiratta, a tourism and aviation expert, emphasized the importance of following safety instructions and securing hand baggage to mitigate risks during turbulence.

Harrowing video of female Israeli soldiers captured by Hamas released by families

JERUSALEM. The Hostages and Missing Families Forum, representing the families of Israeli hostages held in Gaza, has released a distressing video showing the capture of five young female Israeli soldiers by Hamas militants on October 7. The video, declassified by the Israeli army and now made public by the families, captures the harrowing moments of the soldiers’ capture near the Gaza border.

The footage reveals the young soldiers, aged 19 and 20, bloodied and wounded. In one unsettling scene, a militant tells a terrified soldier, “You are beautiful.” The video was recorded during the Hamas assault on the Nahal Oz military base, part of a broader attack on southern Israel that resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people and the abduction of around 250 others.

Seven female soldiers, who served as lookouts on the Gaza border, were taken captive from Nahal Oz. According to the Hostages and Missing Families Forum, one of these women was rescued early in the war through a ground operation, and another was confirmed killed while in Hamas captivity. The remaining five women, featured in the video, are believed to still be held by Hamas.

The families released the footage in a bid to pressure the Israeli government into negotiating a ceasefire with Hamas to secure the hostages’ release. “Every new testimony about what happened to the hostages echoes the same tragic truth — we must bring them all back home, now,” the forum said in a statement. “The Israeli government must not waste another moment.”

The three-minute edited video, with some scenes blurred for sensitivity, shows over a dozen armed militants binding the soldiers, two of whom have visible bloodstains on their faces. The footage also captures interactions between the soldiers and militants, including a militant telling a soldier, “I have friends in Palestine,” to which another militant responds in English, “Be quiet.”

In another distressing scene, militants are seen praying in front of the handcuffed soldiers, one of whom has visible cuts on her legs with blood pooling beneath her. One soldier, appearing to be in her pajamas, is pointed out by a militant who says, “You are beautiful.”

Hamas has dismissed the video as “a manipulated excerpt,” claiming that the minor injuries and blood seen are typical of such operations and denying any physical assault on the women.

The Israeli offensive on Gaza, launched in retaliation to the Hamas attack, has resulted in the deaths of around 35,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between combatants and civilians.

Ashley Waxman Bakshi, a cousin of Agam Berger, one of the soldiers in the video, expressed her anguish upon seeing the footage. “Toward the end, I felt like I was going to throw up. I think any person who watches this video will understand that feeling, especially as a woman,” she said.

The video also shows militants dragging two of the soldiers toward a jeep amid gunfire. One soldier is seen hopping on one foot due to an apparent leg injury. Another clip shows militants holding a hostage by their hands and feet, though it is unclear if the person is alive. In another scene, three female soldiers, including Berger, are seen in the back of a moving vehicle, faces bloodied as militants yell around them.

“We know she’s alive. We can feel it. She has a twin sister, she feels her,” Bakshi said of her cousin. “She was taken hostage not severely injured. You can see from the video.”

China conducts punishment drills around Taiwan following President Lai’s inauguration

BEIJING/TAIPEI. China initiated large-scale military exercises around Taiwan on Thursday, termed as “punishment” drills in response to what it described as “separatist acts” by newly inaugurated Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te. Heavily armed warplanes conducted mock attacks as state media denounced Lai, labeling him a “separatist.”

The exercises took place in the Taiwan Strait and around Taiwan-controlled islands near the Chinese coast, just three days after Lai assumed office. Beijing, which views Taiwan as its territory, reacted sharply to Lai’s inaugural speech where he called for an end to threats and asserted that the two sides are “not subordinate to each other.”

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi criticized Lai as “disgraceful” on Tuesday. Despite Lai’s repeated offers for talks, China has consistently rebuffed him, maintaining that only the people of Taiwan can decide their future and rejecting Beijing’s sovereignty claims.

The Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Eastern Theatre Command announced the commencement of joint military drills involving the army, navy, air force, and rocket force at 7:45 a.m. (2345 GMT). The exercises, named “Joint Sword – 2024A,” cover areas around Taiwan and the Taiwan-controlled islands of Kinmen, Matsu, Wuqiu, and Dongyin, marking the first inclusion of these regions in such drills.

State media reported the deployment of dozens of fighter jets with live missiles and mock strikes on high-value military targets, supported by warships. Taiwan’s defense ministry confirmed the presence of 15 Chinese navy ships, 16 coast guard vessels, and 33 aircraft, but noted no live fire drills near Taiwan.

The drills are scheduled to run for two days. Taiwan’s defense ministry condemned the exercises, stating it had deployed forces around the island, with air defenses and land-based missile systems tracking targets, affirming confidence in protecting its territory. “The launch of military exercises on this occasion not only does not contribute to the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait, it also highlights (China’s) militaristic mentality,” the ministry stated.

Taiwan’s presidential office expressed regret over China’s “unilateral military provocations,” emphasizing that Taiwan could ensure its security. “I have confidence in the military,” President Lai reassured at a military base in Taoyuan, near Taipei.

China’s state broadcaster CCTV criticized Lai’s speech as “extremely harmful,” asserting that China’s countermeasures are “legitimate, legal, and necessary.” CCTV added that Taiwan’s future should be decided by China’s 1.4 billion people, not Taiwan’s 23 million.

Chinese military activity near Taiwan has been frequent over the past four years, with large-scale war games staged in 2023 and 2022. A senior Taiwan official, speaking anonymously, remarked that this time China was essentially formalizing its regular activities rather than dramatically escalating them.

The drills focus on joint sea-air combat-readiness patrols, precision strikes on key targets, and integrated operations within and outside the island chain to test the forces’ “joint real combat capabilities,” according to China’s military. The exercises are intended as a strong punishment for Taiwan independence activities and a warning against external interference.

Despite the drills, there was no sign of panic in Taiwan. The stock market index closed up 0.3% on Thursday, and a central bank official reported normal foreign exchange market operations with no abnormal capital movements. In contrast, China’s live-fire exercises in August 2022 following a visit by former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi were unprecedented in scale and lasted four days, followed by additional drills.

Iran begins funeral for late president, foreign minister, and others killed in helicopter crash

Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Iran solemnly began the burial of its late President Ebrahim Raisi at the Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad on Thursday, marking the final tribute to a close ally of the Supreme Leader who perished in a helicopter crash earlier this week. This event concluded days of nationwide processions aimed at reinforcing the country’s theocracy.

President Raisi, along with Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and six others, died in the crash, which occurred in a foggy, mountainous region. The funeral in Mashhad drew hundreds of thousands, many dressed in black and displaying traditional signs of Shiite mourning. A truck carried Raisi’s casket through the streets, with mourners reaching out for blessings.

Despite the large turnout, the crowds were noticeably smaller compared to those at the 2020 funeral of Revolutionary Guard Gen. Qassem Soleimani, who was killed by a U.S. drone strike. This difference may reflect public sentiment towards Raisi’s presidency, marked by harsh crackdowns on dissent during the 2022 protests over Mahsa Amini’s death and a struggling economy.

State media and newspapers provided extensive coverage of the funeral while omitting Raisi’s controversial involvement in the mass execution of dissidents at the end of the Iran-Iraq war. The cause of the helicopter crash remains undisclosed, and prosecutors have warned against any public celebration of Raisi’s death, with heavy security observed in Tehran since the incident.

The funeral ceremonies began in Birjand, South Khorasan province, and continued in Mashhad. Raisi’s burial at the Imam Reza Shrine, where Shiite Islam’s 8th imam is interred, signifies a major honor. The shrine is managed by the Imam Reza charity foundation, a powerful conglomerate overseen by Iran’s supreme leader. Raisi, appointed by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei in 2016, had previously led this foundation.

Raisi’s death comes at a politically sensitive time, with the next presidential election set for June 28. His potential as a successor to the 85-year-old Khamenei added to the political implications of his untimely demise. Acting President Mohammad Mokhber, previously a relatively unknown figure, has assumed Raisi’s duties.

As Raisi’s body was interred, former Foreign Ministers Mohammed Javad Zarif and Ali Akbar Salehi, along with other dignitaries, paid their respects to the late Foreign Minister Amirabdollahian at the Foreign Ministry. Amirabdollahian’s body was later buried at the Abdol Azim shrine near Tehran, another significant site in Persian history.

In a poignant moment, a religious singer at Amirabdollahian’s burial invoked the memory of Gen. Soleimani, reflecting the intertwined fates of Iran’s prominent figures amid ongoing regional tensions.

Lauryn Hill’s ‘Miseducation’ tops Apple Music’s all-time best albums list

LOS ANGELES. The debate over the greatest music albums of all time has taken a new turn, as Apple Music announced its top ten greatest albums on Wednesday, with Lauryn Hill’s 1998 classic, “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,” clinching the number one spot.

Hill’s debut album triumphed over iconic records from music legends such as Beyoncé, The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Kendrick Lamar, Amy Winehouse, Frank Ocean, and Nirvana. Reflecting on the honor, Hill stated, “This is my award, but it’s a rich, deep narrative, and involves so many people, and so much sacrifice, and so much time, and so much collective love.”

Apple Music’s announcement was the climax of a ten-day countdown, unveiling their inaugural list of the 100 best albums. Only five artists, including The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Prince, Radiohead, and Beyoncé, had two albums featured on the full list.

The selection process began months ago with Apple Music’s editorial team, comprised of editors and music experts such as Zane Lowe, the global creative director and lead anchor for Apple Music 1, and Ebro Darden, the global editorial head of hip-hop and R&B. This team generated a list of candidates from the past 65 years.

“This list isn’t a popularity contest,” Darden explained. “We challenged everyone to not vote based on your favorites. You’re invited into the panel because you have music knowledge beyond what you listen to when you’re on the elliptical machine.”

Apple Music’s internal team and a select group of external voters, including artists, songwriters, producers, and media members, submitted their personal lists through the company’s voting microsite. Votes were weighted based on an album’s ranking, with higher placements receiving more votes.

Here are the top ten albums according to Apple Music:

  1. Lauryn Hill, “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” (1998)
    • Darden praised Hill’s work: “We’re really leaning on what she did on this album. The songwriting, what she shared, what was happening in her life… It’s hip-hop. It’s R&B. It’s got a dancehall element. It’s a powerful woman being independent and being like ‘Yo, I got something to say.'”
  2. Michael Jackson, “Thriller” (1982)
    • Lowe noted, “It’s the greatest blockbuster album ever… ‘Thriller’ is an incredible record. The whole thing is dialed in. But it didn’t bug me that Lauryn came in at No. 1 and ‘Thriller’ landed at No. 2.”
  3. The Beatles, “Abbey Road” (1969)
    • Darden commented, “‘Abbey Road’ has taken on a more modern life of its own in the social media space with TikTok. It musically represents a happy time for the Beatles.”
  4. Prince and the Revolution, “Purple Rain” (1984)
    • Darden shared, “I love that it was a Black artist making soulful rock and pop records… I think ‘Purple Rain’ lives on in iconic fashion.”
  5. Frank Ocean, “blond” (2016)
    • Lowe expressed, “I had this higher than five. I simply adore this album… Every time I put it on, it moves me different every single time.”
  6. Stevie Wonder, “Songs in the Key of Life” (1976)
    • Lowe highlighted, “It starts with a message, and it ends with a time to process everything that’s happened in between.”
  7. Kendrick Lamar, “good kid, m.A.A.d city” (2012)
    • Darden remarked, “It was his debut album… He created opportunities for him and his friends to survive.”
  8. Amy Winehouse, “Back to Black” (2006)
    • Lowe noted, “It’s one of the most tasteful albums about heartache ever recorded.”
  9. Nirvana, “Nevermind” (1991)
    • Lowe said, “This album was the start of me being able to sit down and have a conversation about anxiety and depression.”
  10. Beyoncé, “Lemonade” (2016)
    • Darden reflected, “This was the first time we got to see Beyoncé’s personal life… It was a big deal.”

With this comprehensive list, Apple Music has sparked fresh discussions on the greatest albums of all time, celebrating the diversity and depth of musical artistry over the past several decades.

Pasukan sa Hulyo 29, inaprubahan na ni Pangulong Marcos Jr.

MAYNILA.
