Police disband pro-Palestinian protest camp at UCLA

LOS ANGELES. Hundreds of police officers stormed into a central plaza at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), dismantling a pro-Palestinian protest camp in a pre-dawn operation on Thursday. The move followed a violent altercation the previous night instigated by pro-Israel supporters.

Tensions have been escalating on U.S. college campuses over protests concerning Israel’s actions in Gaza, culminating in clashes between students and law enforcement.

Live television broadcasts captured the police crackdown, revealing scenes of approximately six protesters under arrest, their hands bound behind their backs with zip-ties. The clash was punctuated by loud explosions from flash-bang charges fired by the police.

Demonstrators, armed with makeshift shields and umbrellas, attempted to resist the police advance, while others surrendered and were escorted away with hands raised. The encampment, which had attracted hundreds of protesters, became the focal point of the standoff.

Prior to the police intervention, tensions had escalated between the pro-Palestinian demonstrators and masked counter-protesters, resulting in a violent clash. The melee, which erupted late Tuesday night, prompted the university to cancel classes the following day.

Authorities attributed the disturbance to “instigators” and vowed to investigate the incident. However, criticisms emerged regarding the delayed response from campus law enforcement.

The protest at UCLA is part of a broader wave of demonstrations across U.S. campuses, calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and advocating for divestment from companies supporting Israel’s government. These protests have sparked counter-demonstrations, with accusations of antisemitism levied against pro-Palestinian activists.

Wednesday night’s police action at UCLA mirrors similar crackdowns at other institutions, including Columbia University in New York City. Mayor Eric Adams reported around 300 arrests, predominantly for trespassing and criminal mischief.

The events at UCLA and other campuses underscore the heightened political tensions surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, resonating even as far as the upcoming U.S. presidential election.

As of now, UCLA officials have announced limited operations on campus, with the fallout from the protest likely to reverberate for days to come.

Utah cat’s unplanned journey to California in an Amazon box

Galena, a 6-year-old house cat from Utah, is renowned for her fondness for hiding and playing with cardboard. However, earlier this month, her playful antics took an unexpected turn when she found herself unwittingly embarking on a cross-country journey in an Amazon package, leading to a tale of a feverish search, a California rescue, and a tearful reunion.

Owner Carrie Clark recounted the ordeal, expressing the family’s stress as they grappled with Galena’s disappearance on April 10. Despite exhaustive efforts, including neighborhood searches and social media alerts in Lehi, Utah, Galena remained elusive. “Not knowing what had happened to her was pretty excruciating,” Clark shared, revealing her week-long anguish.

Hope rekindled when Clark received a life-altering text on April 17, confirming Galena’s whereabouts in Riverside, California. The revelation unfolded: Galena had hitched a ride in an Amazon box containing returned steel-toed boots ordered by Clark’s husband. “Our sweet kitty must have jumped into that box without us knowing,” Clark reflected.

Fortunately, Amazon employees, recognizing the feline passenger, reached out to co-worker Brandy Hunter, known for rescuing cats. Hunter promptly ensured Galena’s well-being, taking her home and arranging a veterinary visit to scan for a microchip. Clark, overwhelmed with relief, flew to California the next day to reunite with her beloved pet.

Reflecting on the emotional rollercoaster, Clark oscillated between laughter and tears. “I went from hysterically laughing that she was stuck like that — we mailed our cat — you know … just the humor part of that, to hysterically crying all within like five seconds,” she confessed.

Clark attributes Galena’s safe return to several factors, including mild weather, a torn box seam providing air, and Hunter’s swift actions. Encouraged by Galena’s resilience, Clark advocates for pet microchipping and urges vigilance when handling Amazon packages.

As Galena readjusts to home comforts, Clark shares her story, emphasizing the importance of pet identification and caution when dealing with shipping containers. Galena’s quiet demeanor during her unexpected journey remains a testament to her remarkable resilience and the enduring bond between pet and owner.

A 300-year old settlement emerges as severe drought dries up Pantabangan dam

PANTABANGAN, Nueva Ecija. An archaeological discovery has unfolded in the Philippines as a nearly 300-year-old settlement, submerged beneath the waters of Pantabangan Dam, has resurfaced amidst a severe drought gripping the region. The unexpected emergence of structures, including remnants of a church, tombstones, and a municipal hall marker, has captured the attention of experts and locals alike.

Marlon Paladin, a supervising engineer for the National Irrigation Administration, revealed that the historic relics began to reappear in March as the scorching heat and prolonged dry spell caused the reservoir’s water levels to plummet. Deliberately inundated during the dam’s construction in the 1970s, the settlement has intermittently resurfaced over the years, but this recent occurrence marks the longest duration of visibility on record.

Paladin noted that the exposed ruins have become a focal point for curious visitors during periods of low water levels, underscoring the intersection of history and natural phenomena.

The Philippines, like much of Southeast Asia, has been grappling with extreme heatwaves, prompting schools to suspend classes as temperatures soar. The blistering conditions, exacerbated by the El Niño climate pattern, have led to heat indices surpassing 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) in some areas, including the town of Muñoz near the dam.

The severity of the drought, compounded by climate change, has cast a shadow over the region’s future. Climatologist Maximiliano Herrera emphasized the vulnerability of Southeast Asia to the impacts of climate change.

Five human skeletons with missing hands and feet, found outside Nazi leader Hermann Göring’s house

Archaeologists have made a chilling discovery at the Wolf’s Lair, a former Nazi military base in Gierloz, northeastern Poland. Unearthing the remains of five individuals, all devoid of hands and feet, has sparked intrigue and speculation about their identities and the circumstances of their demise.

The findings, unveiled by the Latebra Foundation, a historical organization in Gdansk, have intensified curiosity about the site’s dark history. The skeletons, belonging to three adults, a teenager, and a newborn baby, were arranged together near the residence of infamous Nazi leader Hermann Göring, known for his prominence in World War II.

The excavation, triggered by the unearthing of a human skull fragment on February 24, prompted further investigation. Adrian Kostrzewa of the foundation recounted the surprising turn of events, initially mistaking the site for an old bathroom until uncovering ashes, a burned key, and ultimately the fragment. “It was very surprising,” he remarked.

The circumstances surrounding the missing hands and feet remain shrouded in mystery, fueling speculation and theories. Kostrzewa acknowledged the uncertainty, highlighting the importance of ongoing police investigations and the need for radiocarbon dating to determine the age of the remains.

The Wolf’s Lair, nestled deep within the forests of northeastern Poland, served as a formidable stronghold for the Nazi regime during World War II. Hitler himself spent considerable time there, making it a site of strategic importance. Its eventual destruction in 1945, amidst the chaos of advancing Soviet forces, marked the end of an era.

The discovery of the skeletons within the confines of this heavily fortified complex adds another layer of intrigue to its dark history. As historians and authorities continue to unravel the mysteries buried within its grounds, the Wolf’s Lair remains a haunting reminder of the atrocities committed during one of the darkest chapters of human history.

King Charles visits the cancer center on his return to public duties

London. King Charles, sporting a smile and exuding good health, made his return to public duties on Tuesday following his diagnosis with cancer in February. Visiting a cancer treatment center in London, the 75-year-old monarch assured patients of his well-being, marking a significant step in his recovery journey.

Buckingham Palace confirmed on Friday that the monarch’s response to cancer treatment had been positive, allowing him to gradually resume his public engagements. Accompanied by Queen Camilla, King Charles made his first appearance at the University College Hospital Macmillan Cancer Centre, where he warmly greeted onlookers gathered outside.

“I’m alright, thank you,” King Charles reassured one patient, while mentioning to another that he himself would undergo treatment later. The visit also coincided with Charles assuming the role of patron for Cancer Research UK, underscoring the importance of early cancer detection.

Charles’ health concerns emerged in January with news of a corrective procedure for a benign enlarged prostate. Subsequent tests revealed the presence of cancer, unrelated to his prostate, prompting a period of rest and treatment. Despite his health challenges, the monarch maintained private official duties and even greeted well-wishers after an Easter church service in March.

While his schedule will be cautiously managed to safeguard his health, palace officials indicated his potential attendance at forthcoming significant events such as the ‘Trooping the Colour’ military parade and commemorations for the 80th anniversary of World War Two’s D-Day landings in June. Additionally, plans are in place for Charles and Camilla to host a state visit by the Japanese Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako later in June.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s spokesman expressed delight at the monarch’s return, labeling it as “great news” and extending wishes for his continued recovery. The absence of Charles’ daughter-in-law, Kate, who is undergoing preventative chemotherapy following the discovery of cancer after major abdominal surgery, underscores the family’s ongoing health challenges amidst their public responsibilities.

The monarch’s swift return to public duties signals resilience and determination in the face of health setbacks, as King Charles resumes his role with optimism and resolve.
