91-year-old Canadian billionaire Frank Stronach arrested on sexual assault charges

TORONTO. Austrian-Canadian auto parts billionaire Frank Stronach, 91, has been arrested on multiple sexual assault charges spanning several decades, according to police.

Peel Regional Police announced Friday that Stronach faces five charges, including rape, indecent assault on a female, sexual assault, and forcible confinement. Following his arrest, Stronach was released with conditions and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton at a later date.

“There is more than one accuser,” said Peel Regional Police Constable Tyler Bell, though he declined to specify the number of alleged victims. “Obviously, this is a high-profile case. Our special victims unit is bound to protect the victims, and in doing so, that’s why we are being vague.”

The allegations against Stronach cover incidents from the 1980s up to 2023. Bell added that police are encouraging anyone with information or who may have been a victim to come forward.

Stronach has retained prominent Canadian defense lawyer Brian Greenspan, who issued a statement denying the charges. “Mr. Stronach categorically denies the allegations of impropriety which have been brought against him,” Greenspan said. “He looks forward to the opportunity to fully respond to the charges and to maintain his legacy both as a philanthropist and as an icon of the Canadian business community.”

Stronach, originally from Austria, founded Magna International in 1957, growing it into one of the world’s largest suppliers of auto parts. He also established The Stronach Group, a company specializing in horse racing. Stronach’s brief foray into Austrian politics and his recognition as a member of the Order of Canada highlight his varied career.

A Magna spokesperson confirmed that Stronach has had no affiliation with the company since relinquishing control in 2010. “We have recently been made aware of the charges filed against Frank Stronach,” said Dave Niemiec in an email. “Magna has no knowledge of the investigation or the allegations that have been raised beyond what has been reported in the media.” Niemiec added that the company would not comment further on the ongoing legal matter.

In a separate legal issue, Stronach sued his daughter, two grandchildren, and former business associate Alon Ossip in 2018 for over $500 million, alleging mismanagement of family assets. His daughter, Belinda Stronach, a former Canadian Member of Parliament, countersued, claiming her father had lost vast sums on personal projects. The case was eventually settled.

The high-profile nature of Stronach’s case and his significant influence in business and philanthropy add a layer of complexity to the proceedings as the legal process unfolds.

Benny Gantz delays statement after hostage rescue in Gaza

JERUSALEM. Israel’s centrist war cabinet minister Benny Gantz has delayed a statement he was scheduled to give on Saturday, where he was widely expected to announce his resignation from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s emergency government.

Gantz had given the conservative prime minister a June 8 deadline to present a clear post-war strategy for Gaza, where Israel has been conducting a devastating military offensive against the ruling Palestinian militant group Hamas. However, following the news that Israeli forces had rescued four Israeli hostages alive from Gaza, Gantz’s spokespeople announced the postponement of his statement. No new time was provided for the address, which political commentators in leading Israeli newspapers anticipated would include his resignation.

The departure of Gantz’s centrist party would not immediately threaten Netanyahu’s governing coalition, which controls 64 of the 120 seats in parliament, but it could have significant implications. Without Gantz, Netanyahu would lose the support of a centrist bloc that has helped broaden the government’s base both in Israel and abroad. This loss comes at a time of increasing diplomatic and domestic pressure, eight months into the Gaza war.

Without Gantz, Netanyahu would have to rely more heavily on the support of ultra-nationalist parties. These parties, whose leaders had already angered Washington before the war, have since called for a complete Israeli reoccupation of Gaza. This shift would likely strain relations with the United States further and intensify public pressure at home, as the months-long military campaign has yet to achieve its stated goals of destroying Hamas and securing the release of the 120 remaining hostages held in Gaza.

Gantz’s exit might also signal limited prospects for success in the latest ceasefire efforts. Political analysts suggest he would have been more likely to remain if a deal seemed probable. Polls have shown Gantz, a former army commander and defense minister, to be the most formidable political rival to Netanyahu, whose image as a security hawk was damaged by the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel. Gantz joined a unity government shortly after the attack, stating he was putting aside political considerations for the national interest.

Earlier on Saturday, the Israeli military announced the rescue of four hostages from Gaza. The hostages, identified as Noa Argamani, 25, Almog Meir Jan, 21, Andrey Kozlov, 27, and Shlomi Ziv, 40, were abducted during Hamas’s raid on the Nova music festival near Gaza on October 7. They were taken to a hospital for medical evaluations and reported to be in good health. The successful rescue operation adds a new dimension to the already complex political landscape in Israel.

Israel rescues four hostages in Gaza; Palestinian officials report over 50 dead in Israeli assault

JERUSALEM. The Israeli military announced on Saturday the successful rescue of four hostages in a raid in the central Gaza Strip. Simultaneously, Palestinian officials reported that an Israeli attack in the same area resulted in more than 50 fatalities.

The operations, though not confirmed as related, both took place in al-Nuseirat, a frequently contested region in the ongoing eight-month conflict between Israel and Gaza’s ruling Hamas.

The rescued hostages have been identified by the Israeli military as Noa Argamani, 25, Almog Meir Jan, 21, Andrey Kozlov, 27, and Shlomi Ziv, 40. They were promptly taken to a hospital for medical evaluations and were reported to be in good health. These individuals were abducted during Hamas’s deadly raid on the Nova music festival near Gaza on October 7, an attack that triggered the devastating war in the Hamas-controlled enclave.

In the October 7 raid, Hamas killed approximately 1,200 people, according to Israeli authorities. The subsequent Israeli bombardment and invasion of Gaza have resulted in at least 36,801 Palestinian deaths, as per the latest figures from Gaza’s health ministry on Saturday.

Initially, around 250 hostages were taken to Gaza on October 7. As of now, 116 hostages remain in Gaza, according to Israeli estimates, which include at least 40 individuals whom Israeli authorities have declared deceased.

Israeli News 12 broadcast footage showing Argamani reuniting with her father, smiling and embracing him. Video of Argamani’s kidnapping had widely circulated soon after she was dragged into Gaza by gunmen on October 7.

Earlier on Saturday, the Israeli military stated it was targeting militant infrastructure in al-Nuseirat. This announcement was unusual as the military typically does not report on ongoing operations.

Al-Nuseirat, a historic Palestinian refugee camp, has experienced intense Israeli bombing throughout the conflict, along with fierce ground fighting in its eastern areas. The Gaza health ministry reported that the Israeli assaults in al-Nuseirat had resulted in numerous casualties, including women and children, although it did not specify how many of the fatalities were combatants.

A health ministry official estimated the death toll at over 50, stating that emergency response teams were struggling to transport the dead and wounded to a hospital in the nearby city of Deir al-Balah. Many bodies remained in the streets, particularly around a market district. Local residents reported heavy Israeli drone and air strikes in al-Nuseirat, causing the deaths of women and children among others.

Israeli military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari explained that the rescue operation was conducted under fire in a residential neighborhood where Hamas had allegedly been holding captives among civilians under armed guard. In a televised news conference, Hagari mentioned that one Israeli soldier was severely injured and that Israeli forces responded with fire, including airstrikes.

The Gaza war continues to escalate despite calls from Israel’s chief ally, the United States, for a ceasefire and a deal to release the remaining hostages held by Hamas in exchange for Palestinians imprisoned in Israel. The conflict has further destabilized the wider Middle East, involving Hamas’s main backer Iran and its heavily armed Lebanese ally Hezbollah, with whom Israeli officials have threatened potential conflict on Israel’s northern border.

Tokyo City Hall develops dating app to boost marriage and birth rates

TOKYO. Tokyo City Hall is developing a dating app called “Tokyo Futari Story,” designed to encourage couples, or “futari,” in a society where being “hitori,” or alone, is becoming increasingly common, in a bid to address Japan’s declining marriage and birth rates.

Currently, a website offering advice and general information for potential couples is available online. The dating app is expected to launch later this year and will be accessible via phone or web, a city official confirmed on Thursday.

While specific details are still under discussion, City Hall did not confirm reports from Japanese media that the app would require users to verify their identity with documents such as a driver’s license, tax records to prove income, and a signed declaration of readiness for marriage.

The urgency behind this initiative is underscored by recent data from the health ministry, revealing a sharp decline in marriage and birth rates. In 2023, there were 474,717 marriages, down from 504,930 in 2022, and births fell to 727,277 from 770,759.

Media reports also speculated that the app might ask for users’ height, job, and education details, though officials have not confirmed these features.

On a broader scale, the Japanese government has been addressing labor shortages by offering financial incentives for families with children, enhancing child-care facilities, and relaxing immigration policies to attract foreign workers.

During the 1970s “baby boom” era, Japan recorded over 2 million births annually. However, similar to trends among young adults worldwide, fewer Japanese are now interested in traditional marriage or having children. Contributing factors include demanding workplace norms that limit social interactions outside of work and the high costs associated with raising children.

In addition to the dating app, Tokyo City Hall sponsors events where singles can meet, provides counseling for couples on marriage, and even offers to turn couples’ love stories into manga comics or songs.

Tokyo City Hall’s innovative approach aims to tackle the demographic challenges head-on, promoting family life and helping individuals find partners in a rapidly changing society.

“Non-compliance will merit the declaration that these are illegal campaign materials carrying with it appropriate sanctions against the candidate/s. Take note and very important, this is not a requirement for the filing of Certificate of Candidacy (COC), but a requirement for the conduct of the campaign,” ani Garcia.

Prince William plays usher at Duke of Westminster’s wedding

LONDON. Prince William stepped away from his royal duties on Friday to serve as an usher at the wedding of his close friend, Hugh Grosvenor, the Duke of Westminster. The high-society event, however, faced a brief interruption by environmental protesters.

Hugh Grosvenor, 33, one of Britain’s wealthiest landowners, married his partner Olivia Henson, 31, at Chester Cathedral in northwest England. This wedding is considered one of the most significant social events of the year in Britain.

Prince William, 41, arrived at the cathedral alongside his fellow ushers before the midday service. The cathedral is situated near the duke’s 10,000-acre Eaton Hall estate, where a private wedding reception was scheduled to take place.

Hundreds of onlookers gathered outside the cathedral cheered as Grosvenor, dressed in a morning suit, and Henson, in a white wedding dress by British designer Emma Victoria Payne, made their grand entrances. Henson’s long veil, worn over a tiara, flowed gracefully in the wind.

As the newlyweds emerged from the cathedral and shared a kiss in front of the assembled crowd, the celebration was momentarily disrupted. Two environmental protesters sprayed orange powder from a fire extinguisher before being swiftly apprehended by police.

Cheshire Police reported that a 69-year-old woman and a 73-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of public order offenses. The protest group Just Stop Oil claimed responsibility, stating that the individuals were demanding an end to fossil fuel extraction.

Hugh Grosvenor is the godfather to 10-year-old Prince George, the eldest son of Prince William and his wife Kate. Kate, who is currently undergoing cancer treatment, did not attend the wedding. Prince Harry, William’s estranged younger brother who resides in California with his wife Meghan and their two children, was also absent.

Grosvenor inherited his title at 25 following the death of his father in 2016. The Grosvenor family’s wealth dates back to 1677 when Sir Thomas Grosvenor married heiress Mary Davies and acquired marshland that would later develop into the prestigious London neighborhoods of Mayfair and Belgravia.

Today, the Grosvenor Estate owns 300 acres of land in London and additional properties across Britain and around the world. The 2024 Sunday Times Rich List estimated the Duke’s wealth at over £10 billion ($12.8 billion).

Putin threatens to supply long-range weapons to allies targeting the West

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia. President Vladimir Putin issued a stark warning on Wednesday that Russia could begin supplying long-range weapons to its allies for use against Western targets. This announcement comes in response to NATO allies allowing Ukraine to use their arms to attack Russian territory.

During a rare press conference with international journalists at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Putin also reaffirmed Russia’s readiness to deploy nuclear weapons if it perceives a threat to its sovereignty. “That would mark their direct involvement in the war against the Russian Federation, and we reserve the right to act the same way,” Putin stated.

Recently, the United States and Germany authorized Ukraine to strike certain targets on Russian soil with the long-range weapons they have supplied to Kyiv. On Wednesday, a Western official and a U.S. senator confirmed that Ukraine had used U.S. weapons to strike inside Russia under newly approved guidance from President Joe Biden, aimed at defending Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city.

Putin alleged that the use of some Western-supplied weapons involves military personnel from those countries controlling the missiles and selecting targets. Consequently, he suggested that Moscow might take “asymmetrical” measures elsewhere in the world. However, the U.S. military maintains that it does not control the missiles it provides to Ukraine or the targets.

“If they consider it possible to deliver such weapons to the combat zone to launch strikes on our territory and create problems for us, why don’t we have the right to supply weapons of the same type to some regions of the world where they can be used to launch strikes on sensitive facilities of the countries that do it to Russia?” Putin said. “We will think about it.”

When asked about the potential use of nuclear arms, Putin referred to Russia’s security doctrine, emphasizing that if the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity are threatened, Russia considers it possible to use all means at its disposal. “For some reason, they believe in the West that Russia will never use it,” he remarked, highlighting the potency of Russia’s battlefield nuclear weapons compared to those used by the U.S. in World War II.

During the more than three-hour session, Putin also addressed U.S.-Russia relations, indicating that little would change regardless of whether Joe Biden or Donald Trump wins the upcoming American presidential election. “We will work with any president the American people elect,” Putin said. He also commented on Trump’s recent felony conviction, describing it as a result of the “use of the court system as part of the internal political struggle.”

Putin took questions on various subjects, though the ongoing conflict in Ukraine dominated the discussion. He accused the West of missing opportunities to end the fighting, claiming he once wrote to Biden suggesting that hostilities could end in a few months if Washington ceased supplying weapons to Kyiv.

On the issue of military losses, Putin refrained from providing specific details but asserted that Ukraine’s casualties are five times greater than Russia’s. He stated that Ukraine holds more than 1,300 Russian troops in captivity, while Russia detains over 6,400 Ukrainian soldiers—figures that could not be independently verified.

When asked by the Associated Press about the case of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, jailed over a year ago on espionage charges, Putin acknowledged U.S. efforts to secure his release but stressed that such matters should be handled through “a discreet, calm and professional approach” and on a reciprocal basis, hinting at a potential prisoner swap.

The St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, hosted in Gazprom’s new 81-story skyscraper, has been a platform for Russia to showcase its development and attract investors. However, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the forum has seen a reduced presence of Western officials and investors due to wide-ranging sanctions imposed on Moscow.

Record 13 million students tackle ‘world’s toughest’ college entrance exam in China

BEIJING. A record-breaking 13.4 million high school students across China are undertaking the highly competitive national college entrance exam, known as “gaokao,” in a crucial bid to secure their future amidst a slowing economy and shrinking job opportunities for young graduates.

The two-day “gaokao,” the world’s largest academic test, has been described by Chinese state media as “the world’s toughest” college entrance exam due to its high stakes, competitiveness, and intensity. Students pour 12 years of learning into a series of subject tests, each lasting less than two hours.

This year’s record number of participants surpasses last year’s 12.9 million, marking the largest “gaokao” in China’s history. The exam covers subjects including Chinese literature, math, English, physics, chemistry, politics, and history, and a high score is essential for entry into the country’s top universities.

Unlike U.S. students, who can retake the SAT exams, most Chinese students have only one shot at the grueling test. The pressure is further amplified by China’s slowing economic growth and soaring youth unemployment rates.

On the first day of the exam, parents anxiously waited outside school gates, sending their children off into exam halls. Many parents and teachers dressed in red, the color symbolizing victory in China, and some held sunflowers, considered an auspicious symbol for academic success.

Authorities have implemented various measures to ensure order and stability around examination sites. In Beijing, traffic police were on the streets as early as 6 a.m. to manage traffic flow near a school close to the Summer Palace, a renowned tourist spot, state news agency Xinhua reported. In Shanghai, taxi dispatch centers began accepting bookings for students taking the exam a week in advance.

Chinese social media was abuzz with good-luck messages and encouragement, with “gaokao” trending as a top search topic on the X-like platform Weibo. Many Chinese celebrities and even some international stars have posted their well wishes for the exam takers.

British soccer legend David Beckham, boasting 10 million fans on Weibo, shared his support in a video message. “I just want to say ‘good luck’ to all the students that are taking their exams soon. You’ve worked so hard. Jin Bang Ti Ming!” Beckham said, using a Chinese phrase that means achieving honors and success in important exams.
