Police had about 90 seconds to stop traffic before Baltimore bridge fell

0

BALTIMORE. A catastrophic event unfolded in Baltimore as a massive cargo ship lost control, hurtling towards the Francis Scott Key Bridge. With just about 90 seconds to spare, law enforcement scrambled to halt traffic on the bridge, but their efforts couldn’t prevent disaster.

“The whole bridge just fell down,” one officer’s frantic voice crackled over the radio. “Start, start whoever, everybody … the whole bridge just collapsed.”

The container ship Dali collided with a support pillar around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, causing a significant section of the bridge to crumple into the Patapsco River. In its wake, six workers from a construction crew, who had been filling potholes on the bridge, were missing and presumed dead. The aftermath of the collapse is expected to disrupt commuter traffic and impede vital shipping operations in the region.

“This was so completely unforeseen,” lamented Jeffrey Pritzker, an executive with Brawner Builders, the company employing the missing crew. “We take such great pride in safety.”

As rescue efforts ensued and investigations began, details emerged about the ship’s movements. Video footage captured the vessel hurtling toward the bridge at approximately 9 mph (15 kph), prompting Governor Wes Moore to underscore the technical challenges of navigating restricted waters without propulsion or steering.

Amidst the chaos, the tragedy’s human toll reverberated. Father Ako Walker, a Catholic priest, stood alongside anguished families awaiting news of their loved ones. “You can see the pain etched on their faces,” he said.

The fallout from the collapse extends far beyond Baltimore. With shipping traffic halted indefinitely at the Port of Baltimore, a major East Coast hub, logistical headaches loom large. U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg emphasized the gravity of the situation, while President Joe Biden pledged federal support for the rebuilding efforts.

As the sun rose on a shattered bridge and shattered lives, the city of Baltimore grappled with an unthinkable tragedy. Mayor Brandon Scott mourned the loss, while praising the swift actions of first responders who, by halting traffic, saved lives amid the chaos.

“Literally by being able to stop cars from coming over the bridge, these people are heroes,” Governor Moore affirmed. “They saved lives last night.”

Federal agents raid Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ properties amid investigation

LOS ANGELES. Properties belonging to hip-hop icon Sean “Diddy” Combs became the focus of a federal investigation, with raids conducted in both Los Angeles and Miami. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security agents spearheaded the inquiry, shedding light on the rapper’s legal woes.

The investigation, initiated by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents based in New York, stems from a lawsuit filed against Combs in federal court last November. The suit, brought forward by a former girlfriend, accused him of involvement in sex trafficking, prompting federal authorities to delve deeper into the matter.

Combs, vehemently denying the allegations, has adamantly proclaimed his innocence, dismissing the claims as a mere ploy for financial gain. His attorney, Ben Brafman, refrained from immediate comment on the unfolding developments.

Television broadcasts in Los Angeles captured the dramatic scenes as HSI agents descended upon Combs’ opulent estate in the city’s prestigious Holmby Hills neighborhood. While several individuals were reportedly detained during the raid, details regarding any arrests remain unclear.

Simultaneously, federal authorities executed a search warrant at Combs’ residence in the Miami area, specifically on Star Island in Miami Beach. Footage revealed officers combing through the property, carrying out boxes of potential evidence.

Amidst the unfolding events, Combs’ whereabouts during the raids remained undisclosed.

Responding to inquiries, HSI spokespersons confirmed the enforcement actions, emphasizing their collaboration with local law enforcement partners. However, the precise nature of the investigation was not divulged.

The legal saga surrounding Combs intensified last November when R&B vocalist Cassandra Ventura filed a lawsuit against him, alleging a decade-long history of physical abuse, sexual slavery, and rape. Central to Ventura’s claims were allegations of sex trafficking, prompting a federal probe into Combs’ conduct.

Despite reaching a confidential settlement with Ventura shortly after the lawsuit was filed, Combs continues to deny any wrongdoing. His attorney maintained his client’s steadfast denial of Ventura’s allegations.

This recent investigation marks another chapter in a series of legal battles for Combs, with multiple civil complaints alleging sexual assault surfacing in recent months. Denying all allegations as fabrications, Combs stands firm against the mounting legal challenges, affirming his innocence amidst the storm of controversy.

Baltimore bridge collapse: Rescuers scoured the river for casualties after ship collision

0

BALTIMORE. A container ship collided with a significant bridge in Baltimore in the early hours of Tuesday morning, resulting in its catastrophic collapse into Patapsco River below below. The chilling waters swallowed several vehicles, prompting a frantic search for survivors by rescue teams.

Baltimore Fire Chief James Wallace reported that two individuals were successfully rescued from the waters beneath the Francis Scott Key Bridge, with one of them in a serious condition. Wallace indicated that authorities were potentially seeking upwards of seven individuals, though this number remained subject to change. However, it remained uncertain whether the two rescued individuals were among those seven.

The incident unfolded as the ship, reportedly experiencing a loss of propulsion, attempted to depart the port, according to an unclassified U.S. intelligence report cited by ABC News.

“This is a mass-casualty, multi-agency event,” declared Kevin Cartwright, spokesperson for the Baltimore City Fire Department. “This operation is going to extend for many days.”

The sheer scale of the disaster remained nebulous, with Baltimore officials estimating that at least seven vehicles had plunged into the river, though an exact count eluded them. Cartwright speculated that up to 20 individuals, along with numerous vehicles, might be submerged in the murky depths.

Amidst the wreckage and turmoil, a chilling video captured the ship’s collision with the bridge, illuminating the darkness with a fiery explosion as vehicles tumbled into the abyss. This grim spectacle harkened back to the haunting memory of the 2007 I-35W bridge collapse in Minneapolis, which claimed 13 lives.

Maryland Governor Wes Moore swiftly declared a state of emergency to facilitate the deployment of federal resources, while reassurances were made that there were no indications of terrorism, as affirmed by Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley.

In the aftermath, traffic ground to a halt at the Port of Baltimore, casting a shadow over its status as the busiest U.S. port for car shipments. The ramifications extended beyond the immediate tragedy, as uncertainties loomed over the port’s operations and the condition of other vessels.

The vessel responsible for the calamity, identified as the Dali, bore a Singaporean flag and was chartered by the shipping giant Maersk at the time of the incident. Despite the devastation, there were no reports of injuries among the ship’s crew, as confirmed by Synergy Marine Corp, its manager.

As investigations into the incident unfolded, attention turned to the enduring significance of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, a testament to the nation’s history, named after the author of the Star Spangled Banner and standing as a symbol of resilience since its opening in 1977.

UN call for Gaza cease-fire sparks fiercest US-Israel clash since war began

UNITED NATIONS. The United Nations Security Council issued its first demand for a cease-fire in Gaza on Monday, marking a pivotal moment in the ongoing conflict. The decision, however, ignited a fierce confrontation between the United States and Israel, as the former abstained from the vote, much to the latter’s dismay.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed his dissatisfaction, accusing the U.S. of “retreating” from its principles by not linking the cease-fire to the release of hostages held by Hamas. The cancellation of a high-level delegation visit to Washington further underscored the intensity of the clash, marking the strongest public disagreement between the allies since the conflict began.

“We confirm our readiness to engage in an immediate prisoner exchange process that leads to the release of prisoners on both sides,” stated Hamas, hinting at a potential breakthrough in negotiations.

The abstention by the U.S. reflected its stance that a cease-fire and the release of hostages should be addressed together. However, this move drew criticism from Israel and exposed the deepening tensions between the Biden administration and Netanyahu’s government.

The resolution, which passed with overwhelming support from the Security Council, demanded the release of hostages but did not make it a condition for the cease-fire during the month of Ramadan.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized the urgency of implementing the resolution, warning of dire consequences if it fails.

The vote marked a significant departure from previous Security Council actions, reflecting growing international pressure to address the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza. However, challenges persist as the conflict continues to claim lives and exacerbate the suffering of civilians.

Efforts to broker a lasting cease-fire remain ongoing, with the hope that diplomatic engagement will pave the way for peace in the region.

Anyare? Mahina ang voter education; malakas ang propaganda

Maka-BBM. Maka-Duterte. Marami sila.

May kusang palo, ika nga.

Kaya, babalik tayo sa konsepto ng pagkamamamayan: With freedom comes great responsibility.

EU laws against forest cutting reshaping coffee industry, sparking winners and losers

Buon Ma Thuot, Vietnam. In the verdant fields outside Buon Ma Thuot city, Le Van Tam’s coffee plantation tells a story of adaptation. Tam, a small coffee farmer in Vietnam’s Central Highland region, has witnessed the shifting tides of global trade over decades. From chasing yields to now cultivating quality, his journey mirrors the evolution of an industry reshaped by changing demands and environmental imperatives.

“In the 1990s, it was all about quantity,” Tam reflects, as he surveys his sun-dappled forest-turned-coffee plantation. “But now, it’s about the value of the product.”

Tam’s transformation underscores a broader trend in the coffee world, one driven not just by market forces but by stringent European Union laws aimed at curbing deforestation. The European Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), set to take effect on December 30, 2024, is poised to reorder the dynamics of global coffee trade, with far-reaching implications for farmers, exporters, and consumers alike.

Under the EUDR, products like coffee will face a ban if companies fail to prove they aren’t linked to deforestation. The regulation casts a wide net, encompassing commodities such as cocoa, soy, and palm oil. For Vietnam, where coffee constitutes a significant portion of export income, the stakes are high.

“The EUDR marks an inevitable change,” asserts Le Minh Hoang, Vietnam’s agriculture minister, emphasizing the need for sustainable practices. With Europe accounting for 40% of Vietnam’s coffee exports, the country has swiftly moved to prepare its coffee-growing regions for compliance.

For farmers like Tam and his export partner, Le Dinh Tu of Aeroco Coffee, adaptation has been swift. Embracing sustainable methods, they’ve positioned themselves to meet the new requirements and reap the rewards of higher-quality produce.

“We must choose the highest quality,” Tu affirms, sipping a cup of their meticulously crafted coffee. “Otherwise, we will always be laborers.”

However, challenges loom large, particularly for smaller farmers and less-prepared suppliers. In Vietnam, efforts are underway to equip half a million smallholders with the necessary tools and certifications. Yet, ensuring compliance across the intricate coffee value chain remains a formidable task.

In Brazil, the world’s largest coffee producer, the transition may be smoother, given its established supply chain and extensive certification programs. But for countries like Peru and Ethiopia, where smallholder farming is prevalent and institutional challenges abound, the road ahead is fraught with uncertainty.

“In Peru and Ethiopia, gathering data from millions of small farmers presents a monumental challenge,” acknowledges Helen Bellfield of Global Canopy. “The impact on these communities could be significant.”

Indeed, as orders dwindle and doubts linger, the ripple effects of the EUDR are felt far beyond European shores. In Ethiopia, where coffee forms a substantial portion of export earnings, the urgency to comply is matched only by the daunting task of implementation.

“These regulations will reshape the industry,” reflects Gizat Worku of the Ethiopian Coffee Exporters Association. “The challenge now is ensuring no one is left behind.”

As the countdown to December 30 continues, the global coffee community braces for a new era, one defined by sustainability, accountability, and the enduring quest for the perfect cup. In this brewing revolution, winners and losers will emerge, their fate intertwined with the changing currents of trade and regulation.

Philippines lodges its ‘strongest protest’ against China over a water cannon assault in disputed sea

MANILA. The Philippines issued its “strongest protest” against China on Monday, summoning a senior Chinese diplomat following a water cannon assault by the Chinese coast guard that left Filipino navy crew members injured and their boat heavily damaged in the disputed South China Sea.

In response to the protest, China cautioned that relations were at a critical juncture, urging the Philippines to tread carefully.

The incident occurred near the contested Second Thomas Shoal, where Chinese vessels encircle the area in an attempt to dislodge Philippine forces. Two Chinese coast guard ships reportedly targeted a Philippine navy-operated supply boat with water cannons, marking the latest and most serious clash between the two nations in the disputed region.

Tensions in the South China Sea have escalated over the past year, raising concerns of a potential conflict between China and the United States. The U.S. has reiterated its commitment to defend the Philippines, its oldest treaty ally in Asia, in the event of an armed attack in the area.

China defended its actions, accusing Philippine vessels of trespassing into Chinese waters. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian characterized the Chinese coast guard’s response as “legitimate, professional, and restrained,” reaffirming China’s resolve to safeguard its territorial sovereignty.

Amidst the escalating diplomatic row, Philippine Foreign Undersecretary Theresa Lazaro conveyed the nation’s strong protest against China’s aggressive actions during a phone call with her Chinese counterpart. In response, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Chen Xiaodong urged the Philippines to exercise prudence in its decisions, accusing Manila of provoking incidents at Second Thomas Shoal.

Second Thomas Shoal, occupied by Philippine forces since 1999, has become a flashpoint in the territorial dispute. The recent clash marks the second time this month that a Philippine supply boat has been damaged by water cannons.

As tensions continue to simmer, Philippine defense and foreign affairs officials convened to discuss potential measures to address China’s provocative actions in the South China Sea. Recommendations from the meeting will be presented to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for consideration.

The South China Sea, a vital global trade route, is contested by multiple nations, including Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Brunei. Despite a 2016 international arbitration ruling invalidating China’s expansive claims, Beijing has refused to recognize the decision, fueling ongoing tensions in the region.
