Moscow Concert hall attack: Russian court charges four with terrorism

MOSCOW. Russia has brought charges against four individuals accused of orchestrating the devastating attack on a Moscow concert hall, resulting in the loss of at least 137 lives. The suspects, visibly injured, appeared in court facing accusations of terrorism.

According to reports, the Islamic State (IS) group has claimed responsibility for the assault, releasing chilling footage of the attackers opening fire on concertgoers inside Crocus City Hall. While Russian authorities have implicated Ukrainian involvement, Kyiv has dismissed these claims as baseless.

French President Macron, amidst heightened terror alerts, cautioned against exploiting the tragedy to shift blame, denouncing such actions as cynical and counterproductive. Meanwhile, rescue efforts persist as authorities comb through the debris in search of survivors.

The defendants, identified as Dalerdzhon Mirzoyev, Saidakrami Murodali Rachabalizoda, Shamsidin Fariduni, and Muhammadsobir Fayzov, were visibly battered as they appeared in court. Allegations of torture have surfaced, with reports indicating severe mistreatment during interrogation.

Despite the defendants’ apparent injuries, the court revealed that Mirzoyev confessed to the charges in full, while Rachabalizoda also admitted guilt. The four men, citizens of Tajikistan, will remain in pre-trial detention until at least May 22nd.

The attack has reignited debates surrounding Russia’s stance on the death penalty, with calls for its reinstatement echoing among senior officials. The assault, which unfolded during a rock concert, underscores concerns over security measures and external threats facing the nation.

While accusations of Ukrainian involvement persist, international voices, including the United States, attribute sole responsibility to the IS group. As investigations continue, the global community remains vigilant against the looming specter of terrorism.

Study reveals coffee drinkers have lower risk of bowel cancer recurrence

A recent study has uncovered a potentially significant link between coffee consumption and a reduced risk of bowel cancer recurrence, offering hope for those battling the disease. Researchers suggest that encouraging coffee intake among individuals diagnosed with bowel cancer could have promising implications.

Conducted by Dutch and British researchers and funded by the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF), the study examined 1,719 patients with bowel cancer in the Netherlands. The findings indicate that individuals who consumed two to four cups of coffee daily were notably less likely to experience a recurrence of the disease. Moreover, higher coffee consumption was associated with a decrease in mortality rates among patients.

Dr. Ellen Kampman, the study’s lead researcher and a professor of nutrition and disease at Wageningen University in the Netherlands, highlighted the significance of the findings. “It’s intriguing that this study suggests drinking three to four cups of coffee may reduce the recurrence of bowel cancer,” she remarked, emphasizing the potential dose-dependent nature of the effect.

However, Dr. Kampman cautioned that while the study reveals a strong association between coffee consumption and bowel cancer outcomes, it does not establish a direct cause-and-effect relationship. Further research is needed to elucidate the mechanisms underlying this association.

Prof. Marc Gunter, a co-author of the study and chair in cancer epidemiology and prevention at Imperial College London, echoed Dr. Kampman’s sentiments, describing the findings as both provocative and promising. He highlighted the myriad biologically active compounds in coffee, which possess antioxidative properties and may play a role in protecting against bowel cancer.

Coffee’s emergence as a potential protective factor against cancer is notable, especially considering the World Health Organization’s previous classification of coffee as “possibly carcinogenic.” However, subsequent evidence has failed to support this classification, leading to a reassessment of coffee’s health effects.

The study’s findings add to the growing body of research suggesting potential health benefits associated with coffee consumption. As scientists continue to delve into the biology underlying these effects, coffee may emerge as a valuable ally in the fight against cancer.

Chlorogenic acid, a compound found in coffee as well as kale, has been identified as a potential key player in mitigating cancer risk due to its role in managing glucose and insulin levels in the body.

While the study offers promising insights, researchers emphasize the need for further investigation to fully understand the mechanisms by which coffee may influence bowel cancer prognosis and survival.

Pope Francis opts to skip Palm Sunday homily

VATICAN CITY. Pope Francis made an unexpected departure from tradition during the Palm Sunday Mass, choosing not to deliver his homily, a decision rarely seen for such a significant occasion. Despite this deviation, he continued to lead the service, reciting the noon prayer, and engaging with the crowd from a popemobile.

The 87-year-old pontiff has been grappling with bouts of bronchitis and influenza in recent weeks, leading him to delegate the reading of his addresses. However, on Sunday, he opted not to have his prepared text delivered at all, which is highly unusual, especially during Palm Sunday, which heralds the beginning of Holy Week, a pivotal period leading up to Easter.

The Vatican did not provide an immediate explanation for the Pope’s decision to forego the homily. Vatican Television coverage briefly showed the crowd, omitting the customary close-up of the Pope. An announcer on Vatican Radio then relayed the Pope’s choice to abstain from delivering the homily. Despite this, Pope Francis, dressed in red vestments, continued to lead the Mass, participating in various aspects of the service.

The Palm Sunday service, attended by cardinals, priests, bishops, and an estimated 60,000 participants, featured the traditional holding of palm fronds and olive branches, symbolizing Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem before his crucifixion.

Francis, who has been managing a knee ailment for over a year, has often presided over Masses from a seated position near the altar, with a cardinal assuming the primary celebrant role.

Following the Mass, Pope Francis delivered his weekly Sunday Angelus message and blessing from the altar, a deviation from the norm of delivering it from the window of the Apostolic Palace overlooking the square, a practice typically reserved for major occasions.

During the prayer, he strongly condemned the recent shooting attack at a concert hall near Moscow, denouncing it as a vile and inhuman act that deeply offends God. He reiterated his call for prayers for all those afflicted by conflicts, specifically mentioning Ukraine and Gaza.

Concluding the service, Pope Francis greeted the crowd while being driven around the square in an open-top vehicle, displaying no apparent signs of discomfort as he waved and smiled at the gathered faithful.

New Islamic State videos confirm responsibility for Moscow concert hall attack

0

Newly released footage by the Islamic State (IS) depicts the harrowing moments of the attack on the Crocus City concert hall just outside Moscow, where 133 individuals tragically lost their lives. The videos, disseminated by IS’s news agency Amaq, serve to substantiate the group’s assertion of orchestrating the massacre, countering Russia’s attempt to attribute blame to Ukraine, an accusation firmly denied by Kyiv.

“In these videos, we see the ruthless execution of innocent concertgoers, further confirming IS’s involvement in this heinous act,” stated a spokesperson from the Russian Ministry of Interior.

Russia mourns the loss of lives on a national scale, declaring a day of mourning as the tally of wounded individuals climbs to 154, with fears of further casualties as several victims remain in critical condition. Amidst the somber atmosphere, heartfelt tributes pour in as hundreds gather at the Crocus City Hall in Krasnogorsk, laying flowers and offering condolences to the grieving families.

“The pain of this tragedy is immeasurable. Our hearts go out to all those affected by this senseless act of violence,” remarked a local resident paying respects at the memorial site.

International solidarity flows as foreign embassies in Moscow lower their flags to half-mast in solidarity with the victims. However, amidst these gestures, tensions escalate over the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

“The United States stands with Russia in condemning this cowardly attack and extends our deepest sympathies to the victims and their families,” affirmed a spokesperson from the U.S. Embassy in Moscow.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announces the detainment of 11 individuals, including the four gunmen responsible for the attack. Despite assertions by the U.S. that IS acted independently, Putin alleges Ukrainian involvement without substantiated evidence, further intensifying geopolitical strains.

“Until the investigation into the terrorist attack at Crocus City Hall is completed, any phrase from Washington exonerating Kyiv should be considered as evidence,” remarked Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova.

Fresh revelations shed light on the meticulously planned assault, with gunmen strategically setting fires to funnel victims into a deadly trap within the concert hall. The subsequent manhunt ends in the southern Bryansk region, where suspects are apprehended amidst allegations of torture by Russian security forces.

“We are cooperating closely with Russian authorities to ensure justice is served for the victims of this barbaric act,” stated Tajikistan’s Foreign Ministry in response to allegations of Tajik involvement in the attack.

As Russia and the international community grapple with the aftermath, questions linger over the true perpetrators and the implications for regional security.

UN Security Council to vote on Ramadan cease-fire resolution

UNITED NATIONS. The United Nations Security Council is gearing up for a crucial vote on a resolution urging for a humanitarian cease-fire in Gaza throughout the holy month of Ramadan. However, the United States has expressed reservations, warning that the resolution might hinder negotiations aimed at halting the hostilities between Israel and Hamas.

The proposed resolution, presented by the 10 elected council members and backed by Russia and China, comes on the heels of a U.S.-sponsored resolution vetoed by Russia and China just days ago. This resolution called for an immediate and sustained cease-fire in the ongoing conflict.

The 22-nation Arab Group at the UN has issued a plea for unity among all council members to vote in favor of the resolution, emphasizing the urgent need to end the bloodshed and prevent further loss of lives.

“It is long overdue for a cease-fire,” stated the Arab Group, as Ramadan began on March 10 and will conclude on April 9.

Originally scheduled for Saturday morning, the vote was postponed to Monday morning. Many council members hope that this resolution, if passed, will compel an end to the war that erupted following a surprise attack by Gaza’s Hamas rulers into southern Israel on October 7, resulting in significant casualties and ongoing violence.

The resolution, demanding an immediate humanitarian cease-fire for Ramadan leading to a permanent sustainable cease-fire, also calls for the release of all hostages and emphasizes the necessity to protect civilians and facilitate humanitarian aid in Gaza.

However, U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield expressed concerns regarding the resolution’s potential impact on ongoing negotiations facilitated by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt. She cautioned against any resolution that could jeopardize these delicate diplomatic efforts.

“We should not proceed with any resolution that risks undermining the current negotiations,” remarked Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield, emphasizing the importance of supporting diplomatic initiatives to avoid further deadlock in the Security Council.

The upcoming vote underscores the complexities of international diplomacy as major powers navigate their positions amidst escalating tensions in the Middle East.

Princess Kate discloses her battle with cancer and her ongoing chemotherapy treatment

LONDON. Princess Kate of Wales disclosed on Friday that she is battling cancer and is currently undergoing chemotherapy. The announcement, made via a video message recorded in Windsor and broadcasted on Friday, follows weeks of speculation surrounding her health and absence from public view.

The 42-year-old princess, who had not been seen publicly since Christmas, disclosed her condition while seated on a bench against a backdrop of daffodils, symbols of hope often associated with cancer battles. She appeared in casual attire, wearing a striped sweater and jeans.

The news comes after Princess Kate’s hospitalization for unspecified abdominal surgery in January, which sparked widespread rumors on social media platforms. In her message, she requested “time, space, and privacy” as she undergoes treatment for the undisclosed type of cancer, which was discovered following what she described as “major” surgery.

Prince William, her husband and heir to the throne, was shown alongside her in recent footage, which surfaced this week, as they strolled near a shop on the royal family’s Windsor estate.

The revelation adds to recent challenges faced by the royal family, including the announcement last month of King Charles III’s cancer diagnosis. King Charles expressed pride in Princess Kate’s courage for speaking out about her condition, stating he has been in close contact with her during her treatment.

Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who have been estranged from William and Kate, extended their well wishes, expressing hopes for privacy and peace during this time.

Prior to Friday’s announcement, Kensington Palace had provided limited details about Princess Kate’s health, stating her absence from public duties until April was due to non-cancerous reasons. However, post-surgery tests revealed the cancer diagnosis, leading to the decision to undergo chemotherapy.

Princess Kate’s decision to address the nation directly, rather than through the palace, reflects a rare level of intimacy and transparency from a royal family member. Her treatment, described as “preventative,” is said to be in the early stages, according to medical experts.

The announcement coincides with the start of the Easter holidays, shielding her three children—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—from media coverage of the news.

World leaders and public figures have extended messages of support and admiration for Princess Kate’s bravery in facing her diagnosis, highlighting her significant role within the royal family and her global impact.

Princess Kate, formerly known as Kate Middleton, has been credited with revitalizing the image of the British monarchy since her marriage to Prince William in 2011. Raised in Berkshire, she had no aristocratic background before her royal marriage, earning her the title of a “commoner” marrying into royalty.

As she embarks on this challenging journey, Princess Kate can count on the support of her family, including her brother James Middleton, who expressed solidarity in an Instagram post, affirming their united front in facing this adversity.

Princess Kate’s journey, from her upbringing in Berkshire to her royal marriage and subsequent public role, has been closely followed by millions around the world. Her courage and resilience in confronting this new challenge are sure to inspire many.
