Mass exodus from Al-Shifa hospital amidst Gaza attacks

0

Gaza City’s main hospital, Al-Shifa, witnessed a significant evacuation on Saturday as hundreds, including patients, left the facility amidst escalating violence. While some medical staff claimed they were instructed to evacuate, Israel disputed this assertion.

The scenes unfolded against a backdrop of gunfire and rubble-strewn streets, with many individuals seen leaving the hospital premises. Simultaneously, reports from Hamas health officials indicated that two explosions in Jabalia, northern Gaza, resulted in the tragic deaths of 80 people.

Controversy surrounds an alleged strike on a UN school-turned-shelter, with Israel stating it could not confirm the incident but was conducting an investigation. BBC Verify’s geolocation of footage pointed to Al-Fakhoura school in Jabalia, revealing severe injuries and casualties, including women and children.

Philippe Lazzarini, head of the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), expressed horror at the images emanating from one of their schools, emphasizing the need to halt such attacks.

The Hamas-run health ministry reported over 30 casualties from the same family in Jabalia, attributing the deaths to an Israeli strike. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) expanded operations in Gaza, including Jabalia, aiming to target Hamas.

The Hamas-run health ministry claimed a death toll of 12,300 in Gaza, with over 2,000 individuals feared buried under rubble. At Al-Shifa hospital, only patients unable to move and a limited number of doctors remained, as described by a journalist who raised white flags during the difficult night marked by explosions and gunfire.

While the IDF denied ordering Al-Shifa’s evacuation, it acknowledged facilitating the departure of those wanting to leave through a secure route. Dr. Ramez Radwan, who claimed to be ordered to leave Al-Shifa by Israeli authorities, painted a grim picture of the hospital’s conditions, citing a lack of painkillers and antibiotics.

Amidst ongoing military operations, Israel urged Palestinians in northern Gaza to evacuate for their safety and extended the evacuation directive to residents in the southern city of Khan Younis, home to many who had fled the northern regions.

“We will get the view of the Chinese president on what we can do to bring down the temperature, to not escalate the situation in the West Philippine Sea,” ayon kay Marcos sa isang video message.

SpaceX prepares for another Starship mega rocket test flight following prior explosion

0

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. SpaceX is set to make a second attempt at launching its mega rocket, Starship, after the initial test in April ended in an explosion. Federal regulators have granted final approval for the upcoming test flight scheduled for Friday, according to an announcement from SpaceX.

The first launch of the 400-foot (121-meter) Starship resulted in a dramatic explosion minutes after liftoff from South Texas. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued the necessary license on Wednesday, acknowledging that SpaceX has addressed safety, environmental, and other requirements for the launch. SpaceX, led by Elon Musk, aims to carry out the test flight on Friday morning.

Following the explosion over the Gulf of Mexico, SpaceX undertook numerous improvements to both the Starship rocket and the launch pad. The blast left a substantial crater beneath the pad. Despite the setback, SpaceX holds a significant NASA contract, amounting to $3 billion, to transport astronauts to the lunar surface by 2025 using the Starship spacecraft.

The FAA recently completed its safety review of the upcoming Starship launch, but the environmental review required additional time. The first attempt did not result in any injuries, but the launch pad sustained extensive damage as the rocket’s 33 main engines ignited during liftoff.

Reports from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service highlighted the far-reaching environmental impact of the explosion, with concrete chunks and steel sheets hurled thousands of feet from the pad. Environmental and wildlife groups filed a lawsuit against the FAA, arguing that the agency failed to fully assess the environmental consequences of the Starship program near Boca Chica Beach.

The upcoming test flight is anticipated to last approximately 1 1/2 hours, falling short of a full orbit around Earth. The trajectory will take the spacecraft eastward, passing over the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific oceans before intentionally ditching near Hawaii. The spacecraft will not carry any valuable cargo during this test.

As SpaceX prepares for this crucial test, the outcome will be closely watched, considering the company’s ambitious plans and the concerns raised by environmental groups regarding the potential impact of future launches on the surrounding ecosystem.

Note: The news report provides a comprehensive overview of SpaceX’s upcoming Starship test flight, emphasizing regulatory approvals, past challenges, and environmental considerations.

Advertisers withdraw from Musk’s X over antisemitism concerns

Amid growing concerns about ads appearing alongside pro-Nazi content and hate speech on social media platform X, both IBM and the European Union (EU) have decided to pull their advertisements. The move follows a report by liberal advocacy group Media Matters, which revealed that ads from companies like Apple, Oracle, NBCUniversal’s Bravo network, and Comcast were also placed next to antisemitic material on X.

IBM, expressing zero tolerance for hate speech, promptly suspended all advertising on X after reports linked its ads to content praising Nazis. Other companies mentioned in the report, including Apple, Oracle, NBCUniversal, and Comcast, have not yet commented on their next steps.

Elon Musk, the billionaire owner of X, has faced accusations of tolerating antisemitic messages on the platform since his acquisition last year. Musk’s recent tweets endorsing an antisemitic conspiracy theory further intensified the controversy. The White House condemned Musk’s tweets, stating they run against American core values.

X CEO Linda Yaccarino, hired by Musk to rebuild ties with advertisers, affirmed the platform’s commitment to combating antisemitism and discrimination. Media Matters found that accounts posting antisemitic material on X will no longer be monetizable, and specific posts will be labeled “sensitive media.”

In response to Musk’s tweets, the head of the Anti-Defamation League criticized the use of influence to validate antisemitic theories, calling it dangerous. Musk, in turn, expressed offense at the ADL’s messaging, accusing the group of promoting anti-white racism.

The EU’s executive branch announced a pause in its advertising on X and other social media platforms due to a surge in hate speech. The European Commission has been proactive in addressing disinformation and hate speech, recently making a formal request to X for information on handling such content related to the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Notably, X isn’t the only platform grappling with problematic content during the conflict. TikTok removed the hashtag #lettertoamerica after users posted videos sympathizing with Osama bin Laden’s letter justifying the 9/11 attacks. The EU’s decision to freeze social media ad efforts underscores the broader challenge of disinformation and hate speech on these platforms.

“This is a welcome development,” sabi ni Rivera.

Israel commits to unrestricted humanitarian aid for Gaza as UN ceases aid deliveries

0

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip. The United Nations (UN) has been compelled to suspend the distribution of vital supplies, including food, to Gaza due to a communication blackout resulting from a severe lack of fuel. The collapse of internet and telephone services has left Gaza’s 2.3 million residents in isolation, hindering coordination for essential aid. In response, Israel has agreed to permit a limited daily supply of fuel for the UN and communication systems. However, this falls significantly short of the amount required for critical functions, such as fueling water systems, hospitals, bakeries, and aid delivery trucks.

Israel assured on Friday that there would be “no limitation” on the humanitarian aid requested for Gaza by the United Nations, seemingly responding to international pressure and concerns that its strict control over the war-torn Palestinian territory could lead to starvation and disease.

Earlier in the day, Israel’s national security adviser, Tzachi Hanegbi, announced that the country’s war cabinet had agreed to permit two tanker trucks of fuel to enter the Gaza Strip daily. He described this quantity as “very minimal,” designated for essential services like communications, water, and sewage.

However, in a later media briefing, Israel appeared to adjust its stance, with a defense ministry official, Col Elad Goren of the Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories (Cogat) department, pledging, “Every list we get from the UN will be delivered.”

While not explicitly mentioning fuel or a specific number of tankers, Goren discussed plans to broaden aid, including the establishment of field hospitals to treat wounded Gazans:

“We will increase the capacity of the humanitarian convoys and trucks as long as there is a need. Every list that we get from the UN will be delivered. We will check it and it will enter Gaza, so it’s up to the UN to give us those lists. And if there is a need for 400 trucks, tomorrow there will be 400 trucks. We are not limiting this issue. There is no limitation.”

Reuters notes that while Israel has made promises regarding aid in the past, Goren’s remarks suggest a shift in tone following warnings from UN agencies about rapidly deteriorating humanitarian conditions for the 2.3 million residents of Gaza.

Circus lion recaptured near Rome after escaping

0

A lion that broke free from a circus in Ladispoli, near Rome, on Saturday has been successfully recaptured after several hours of being on the loose, according to an announcement by the local mayor, Alessandro Grando.

The incident unfolded just after 10 p.m. local time (5 p.m. ET) on Saturday when Mayor Grando took to his Facebook page to confirm the capture of the lion. He expressed gratitude to various authorities and volunteers involved in the efforts, including the State Police, the Carabinieri, the Fire Department, local and provincial police, and the Local Health Authority.

Grando highlighted the need for a reassessment of the treatment of animals in circuses, stating, “I hope that this episode will stir some conscience, and that we can finally put an end to the exploitation of animals in circuses.”

The escape was first reported earlier on Saturday when Mayor Grando alerted local residents, urging caution and advising people to stay indoors. The lion was initially tracked down in an adjacent waterway, and circus personnel, supported by law enforcement, initiated capture operations. However, the lion managed to escape again, running through the town.

The mayor revealed that a member of the circus staff reported seeing three individuals running away, and a broken lock at the circus suggested possible sabotage. An investigation into the incident is now underway.

During the escape, the lion was observed roaming the streets of Ladispoli, about 50km from Rome. Videos shared on social media captured the lion among parked cars and near residential gates.

To recapture the lion, veterinarians employed a dart equipped with a geolocator. The animal was eventually found and surrounded near a school. Reports indicate that the lion, while in good condition, appeared frightened and in a state of mild hypothermia.

The Carabinieri are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the lion’s escape. The Organization for the Protection of Animals (OIPA) seized the opportunity to emphasize the potential dangers associated with circuses featuring animals, emphasizing the need for legislation prohibiting such practices.
