Former CBCP president Archbishop Fernando Capalla passes away at 89

DAVAO CITY. Archbishop Fernando Capalla, the former president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), passed away on Saturday at the age of 89, as announced by the Archdiocese of Davao.

Archbishop Capalla served as the CBCP president from 2003 to 2005. Ordained as a priest in 1961, he took on significant roles, chairing both the Episcopal Commission on Interreligious Dialogue and the Episcopal Commission on Ecumenical Affairs. Additionally, he became the first bishop of Iligan when Pope John Paul II elevated it to a diocese in 1982.

Named Davao archbishop in 1996, Archbishop Capalla held the post until his retirement in February 2012. He was not only a spiritual leader but also a peace advocate in Mindanao. Notably, he played a crucial role as the founding father of the Bishops-Ulama Conference, an interreligious organization fostering dialogue between Muslims and Christians. From 1987 to 1991, he served as the apostolic administrator of Marawi.

Davao Archbishop Romulo Valles presided over a Mass dedicated to Archbishop Capalla at the San Pedro Cathedral on Saturday afternoon. During his homily, Archbishop Valles expressed deep sentiments, saying, “We can safely conclude that you, our friend, our tatay (father), our lolo (grandfather), our archbishop, simply day in and day out, believing and showing us the presence of Jesus. And in death, it is so, in faith, we believed that you are now with the Lord. The promise of the Eucharist that he who eats my (The Lord’s) flesh will live with me in eternal life.”

The Archdiocese of Davao announced that Archbishop Capalla will be laid to rest on January 15 at the Dormition de San Pedro after a 10 a.m. mass at the San Pedro Cathedral in Davao City. The passing of Archbishop Capalla marks the end of an era, leaving behind a legacy of spiritual leadership, advocacy for peace, and commitment to interreligious dialogue.

How to deal with same-sex unions? It’s a question fracturing major Christian denominations.

Catholics globally find themselves sharply divided over the Vatican’s recent declaration, granting priests more flexibility in blessing same-sex couples. While supporters of LGBTQ inclusion applaud the move, some conservative bishops view the new policy as a betrayal of the church’s stance against sexual relations between gay or lesbian partners.

This internal turmoil within the Catholic ranks coincides with developments in two other international Christian denominations—the Anglican Communion and the United Methodist Church—both grappling with fractures over LGBTQ-related policies.

The Anglican Communion, second only to the Catholic Church in global reach, has long been troubled by divisions on marriage, sexuality, and LGBTQ inclusion. Tensions heightened on December 17 when Church of England priests officially blessed same-sex partnerships for the first time, leading to dissent among conservative Anglican bishops from Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Pacific.

The United Methodist Church is undergoing a slow-motion separation, losing a quarter of its U.S. congregations due to disputes over LGBTQ-related policies. The denomination, once the third-largest in the U.S., now faces financial challenges as it prepares for lower revenues from church offerings.

Ryan Burge, a political science professor and American Baptist pastor, notes the increasing difficulty for Christian denominations to reconcile opposing views on same-sex relationships, especially as such marriages become legal in many parts of the world.

For global denominations like Catholics, Anglicans, and United Methodists, another source of tension arises from their substantial growth in socially conservative African countries where same-sex relationships are taboo.

Kim Haines-Eitzen, a religious studies professor at Cornell University, emphasizes the historical division within Christianity over theological views, citing issues such as the ordination of women.

In the United Methodist Church, the ongoing debate over same-sex marriage rites and the ordination of LGBTQ individuals has led to a slow but significant breakup. A new denomination, the Global Methodist Church, has emerged for congregations adhering to conservative views.

Other mainline Protestant denominations have experienced similar splits over the past two decades due to irreconcilable differences on LGBTQ inclusion. The debate over same-sex unions remains less divisive in non-Christian religions, with varying stances within Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, and Buddhism.

Wala rin umano siyang plano na tumakbo sa darating na midterm elections dahil hindi na kaya ng kanyang katawan. “I am telling you the truth, wala na ako… Maski ginusto ko man, pero hindi na kaya ng katawan ko. Why do I have to make some pretensions here,” ani Duterte na sinabi na pagod na siya sa pulitika.

“Wala. Ayoko na. Ayoko na ng pulitika. Hindi naman ako nasusuka. I find it disgusting for me to still meddle in politics… Pagod na ako sa pulitika. Count me out,” ani Duterte.

Nagbigay ng reaksiyon si Duterte sa ulat noong nakaraang linggo ni AFP Chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. na may planong destabilisasyon laban kay Marcos. Gayunpaman, ito ay ni­linaw ni AFP spokesman Col. Medel Aguilar, na nagsabing ang hepe ng AFP ay “misquoted.”

Israel signals conclusion of major combat in northern Gaza as war enters fourth month

JERUSALEM. The Israeli military has indicated the completion of major combat operations in northern Gaza, announcing the dismantling of Hamas’ military infrastructure in the region as the war against the militant group enters its fourth month on Sunday.

The military did not provide details on troop deployments in northern Gaza going forward. Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, the military’s spokesman, stated late Saturday that forces would “continue to deepen the achievement” in the region, strengthen defenses along the Israel-Gaza border fence, and shift focus to the central and southern parts of the territory.

The announcement precedes the visit of U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken to Israel. Blinken, currently in Qatar, a key mediator, has urged Israel to scale down its intense air and ground offensive in Gaza. The Biden administration advocates for more targeted attacks against Hamas leaders to minimize harm to Palestinian civilians.

The conflict originated from Hamas’ October 7 attack on southern Israel, resulting in approximately 1,200 casualties, mostly civilians, and 250 people taken hostage.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated that the war would persist until the objectives of eliminating Hamas, securing the return of Israel’s hostages, and ensuring Gaza poses no threat to Israel are achieved. He stated, “This is our responsibility, and this is the obligation of all of us,” addressing his Cabinet.

According to the Health Ministry in Hamas-run Gaza, Israel’s retaliation has led to over 22,800 Palestinian deaths and more than 58,000 injuries. The count does not distinguish between combatants and civilians, with health officials noting that about two-thirds of the casualties are women and minors. Israel attributes civilian casualties to Hamas operating in densely populated residential areas.

On Sunday, Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis received 18 bodies, including 12 children, from an Israeli strike late Saturday. Another airstrike near Rafah killed two journalists, including Hamza Dahdouh, the son of Al Jazeera’s chief correspondent in Gaza.

Al Jazeera condemned the killings, urging the International Criminal Court and human rights groups to hold Israel accountable. The ongoing conflict has seen the death toll rise, with civilians bearing the brunt of the violence.

Israeli forces continue their advance into the central city of Deir al-Balah. Residents received warnings to evacuate, and the international medical charity Doctors Without Borders is evacuating its staff and families from Al Aqsa Martyrs’ Hospital.

Hagari acknowledged the expectation of scattered fighting in northern Gaza and sporadic rocket launches towards Israel. He noted the presence of Hamas militants without a defined structure or commanders.

The military spokesman highlighted the discovery of an “underground city of sprawling tunnels” beneath Khan Younis. Israeli political leaders and Hagari have indicated that the conflict will persist throughout 2024, with a different approach in the south compared to the heavy bombardment and ground combat witnessed in northern Gaza.

Amid U.S. appeals to de-escalate combat, Blinken emphasizes the need for increased aid to Gaza and urges Israeli leaders to outline a post-war vision for the region. Disagreements persist between the Biden administration and Netanyahu regarding the administration of Gaza after the war.

The recent escalation of cross-border fighting between Israel and Hezbollah adds complexity to regional dynamics. Hezbollah labeled Saturday’s rockets as an “initial response” to the targeted killing of a top Hamas leader in a Hezbollah stronghold in Beirut, presumed to be carried out by Israel.

Ipinaliwanag ng Bureau of Customs (BOC) na ang naiulat na pagbebenta ng balikbayan boxes online ay sakop ng isang service agreement kung saan kabilang dito ang mismong nagpadala.

Ang naturang pahayag ay sinabi ni BOC acting deputy commissioner Michael Fermin matapos lumabas ang paunang resulta ng kanilang isinagawang imbestigasyon.

‘Yun pong mismong pinapakita ay kahon mula sa kumpanya ng Golden Express International Cargo, ito po ay binenta sa ilalim po ng service agreement ng mga senders. Ito po kasi ay parang promo. Sa initial report po, lumilitaw po na ito ay promo na ship now, pay later,” ayon kay Fermin.

“So ibig sabihin, nagbabayad lang po sila ng downpayment abroad at pagdating po dito, kailangan nilang bayaran ‘yung balanse upon delivery po,” dagdag pa ng opisyal.

Ayon sa kasunduan, sinabi ni Fermin kung hindi mabayaran ng mga nagpadala ang halaga ng shipment at mobilization sa loob ng dalawang buwan, papayagan nila ang kumpanya na i-liquidate ang mga balikbayan box.

Nagsagawa ng imbestigasyon ang BOC matapos mag-viral ang isang video sa social media ng isang content creator na nagsasabing bumili siya ng care package sa halagang P5,000.

Iginiit ni Fermin na wala na sa hurisdiksyon ng ahensya ang mga balikbayan box dahil nailabas na ito sa mga bodega ng BOC. Aniya, maaari nilang i-subpoena ang kumpanya at iba pang indibidwal.

Ayon sa deputy commissioner, maaaring kasuhan ng estafa ang mga taong mapapatunayang nagbebenta ng mga balikbayan box na hindi nila pag-aari.

Kaugnay nito, tahasang itinanggi ni Fermin ang mga pahayag na ang mga overseas Filipino worker (OFW) na may nawawalang balikbayan box ay kailangang magbayad ng P18,000 hanggang P20,000 upang mahanap ang kanilang mga parcels.

“Nananawagan po kami na wag po silang bastang maniwala. Nagkalat po ang mga scam, nagpapakilala na empleyado ng BOC at kailangan magbayad. Kailanman po, hindi po mag sisingil ang BOC, lalo na po over the phone,” ani Fermin.

Aniya, ang mga transaksyon na kinasasangkutan ng kawanihan ay ginagawa sa pamamagitan ng mga bangko at hindi sa pamamagitan ng mga empleyado.

Nanawagan din si Fermin sa mga biktima ng naturang insidente na makipag-ugnayan sa BOC para sa imbestigasyon sa pamamagitan ng hotline number ng bureau na 8705-6000 o mag-email sa kanila sa boc.cares@customs.gov.ph.

Sa gitna ng patuloy na pagtaas ng presyo ng bigas, inanunsyo ng Department of Agriculture (DA) nitong Sabado, Enero 6, na iniisip nila ang pagpapataw ng suggested retail prices (SRPs) sa mga produkto ng bigas.

Ayon kay DA spokesperson Asec. Arnel de Mesa sa isang interview sa radyo, layunin ng mga SRP na tiyakin na mananatili ang presyo ng bigas sa abot-kayang halaga para sa mga mamimili sa buong bansa.

Sa ngayon, nagsasagawa na ang DA ng mga konsultasyon sa mga partners sa industriya at mga stakeholders. “Hindi ka puwede basta mag-issue ng SRP without doing the consultations with all the stakeholders, from the consumer groups, producer groups, ganoon din sa traders and millers, lahat sila ay dapat nakokonsulta sa pagtatakda ng suggested retail price (SRP),” ayin kay De Mesa,

Ang pahayag ng DA ay kasunod ng ulat ng Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) na ang rice inflation ay umakyat sa pinakamabilis nitong rate sa loob ng 14 na taon noong Disyembre.

Ito ang pinakamabilis na inflation print para sa food staple mula noong Marso 2009, kung saan umakyat ang rice inflation sa 22.9%.

Sinabi ni De Mesa na ang pagtatakda ng SRP ay nakasalalay sa iba’t ibang kadahilanan at ito ay dadaan sa pagsusuri bago ito ipinal at isapubliko.

Batay sa datos ng PSA, ang average na pambansang presyo ng regular milled rice noong Disyembre 2023 ay umabot sa P48.50 kada kilo mula sa P46.73 noong Nobyembre 2023, at mas mataas kumpara sa P39.63 kada kilo noong Disyembre 2022.

Para sa well-milled rice, ang presyo kada kilo noong Disyembre 2023 ay P53.82, na mas mataas kaysa sa P51.99 kada kilo noong Nobyembre ng nakaraang taon. Taon-taon, tumataas ng halos P10 ang presyo ng rice class, ito ay naging P43.98 kada kilo noong Disyembre 2022.

Ayon kay Tactaquin na may suot na bulletproof vest si Buenaventura nang tamaan ito ng bala sa katawan. Dahil dito, nakaganti siya ng putok sa dalawang armadong suspek na ikinamatay ng isa sa mga ito.

WAJIMA, Japan. The death toll from the powerful earthquakes that struck Japan’s western coastline this past week has risen to 126, with aftershocks threatening additional devastation. The hardest-hit region, Ishikawa prefecture, mourns the loss of lives, including a 5-year-old boy who succumbed to worsening injuries sustained from Monday’s 7.6 magnitude earthquake.

The seismic activity has not only claimed lives but has also left roads cracked and vulnerable to collapse. Aftershocks continue to rock the area, exacerbating the risk of further damage. With rain and snow forecasted overnight and into Sunday, officials are concerned about the increased peril to already shaky ground.

Wajima city bears the highest death toll with 69, followed by Suzu with 38. Over 500 people have been reported injured, with at least 27 in serious condition. The temblors have left roofs strewn across roads, buildings flattened, and roads warped like rubber. A devastating fire has turned a neighborhood in Wajima to ashes.

The grim situation is compounded by more than 200 people still unaccounted for, and reports of 11 individuals trapped under collapsed homes in Anamizu. As rescue operations intensify, the community faces not only the immediate challenge of the aftermath but also the long-term economic repercussions.

For 76-year-old Shiro Kokuda, the house in Wajima where he grew up was spared, but a nearby temple went up in flames, and he is still searching for friends at evacuation centers. “It’s been really tough,” he shared.

Japan, grappling with an aging population, is now confronted with the economic and humanitarian challenges posed by the earthquakes. Nearby North Korea, in an unusual gesture, sent a message of condolence to Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. The international community, including President Joe Biden and other allies, has expressed sympathy and pledged aid.

While power is gradually being restored along Japan’s coastline, water supplies remain a critical concern. Emergency water systems have been damaged, prompting thousands of troops to mobilize and transport water, food, and medicine to the over 30,000 evacuees seeking refuge in auditoriums, schools, and other facilities. The nation faces a daunting path to recovery as it navigates the complex aftermath of this devastating natural disaster.
