UNRWA and WHO deliver critical medical supplies to Gaza amidst ongoing crisis

AMMAN/GENEVA. UNRWA, in collaboration with WHO, successfully orchestrated the delivery of urgently needed emergency medical supplies and medicines to Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, located in the northern region of the Gaza Strip. This remarkable effort took place despite the significant risks faced by our staff and health partners due to the continuous bombardments in Gaza.

This marks only the second delivery of life-saving supplies to the hospital since the escalation of hostilities and the complete blockade of Gaza commenced. On October 24, WHO managed to deliver medical supplies to the hospital under high-security conditions.

While this assistance is certainly welcomed, the quantities provided are far from adequate to address the overwhelming healthcare needs in the Gaza Strip. Al-Shifa Hospital, which stands as the largest healthcare facility in the Gaza Strip and one of its oldest Palestinian health institutions, currently faces a dire medical situation.

The hospital is inundated, with almost two patients for every available bed. The emergency department and wards are overwhelmed, forcing doctors and medical staff to treat wounded and sick patients in hallways, on the floor, and even outdoors. The number of wounded individuals continues to rise hourly, and patients are experiencing extreme and unnecessary pain as medicines and anesthetics become increasingly scarce. Furthermore, tens of thousands of displaced people have sought refuge in the hospital’s parking lots and courtyards.

Al-Shifa Hospital holds a long-standing reputation as the primary healthcare facility in Gaza, and its doctors, nurses, and staff have displayed immense heroism in the face of the current crisis. However, they require additional support. Isolating or depriving the northern areas of Gaza from humanitarian assistance is not an option, and patients there have an unequivocal right to the healthcare they urgently require. Humanitarian aid should reach all corners of Gaza.

The critical issue at hand is the depletion of supplies and fuel in medical facilities. Shockingly, no fuel has been allowed into the Gaza Strip, including Al-Shifa Hospital, for over a month.

UNRWA and WHO urgently reiterate their call for the delivery of fuel to humanitarian agencies in the Gaza Strip. Without fuel, hospitals and essential facilities, including desalination plants and bakeries, are unable to function, resulting in more lives lost.

The ability of hospitals and medical facilities to operate is of paramount importance, especially during conflicts. In accordance with international humanitarian law, we demand the protection of all medical facilities, personnel, patients, and the wounded. We advocate for the consistent and ample flow of humanitarian supplies and fuel and for safe and unimpeded access to deliver these supplies to healthcare facilities throughout the Gaza Strip. Additionally, we call for the medical evacuation of critically injured and ill patients.

Man crushed to death by robot in South Korea

0

SEOUL. A tragic incident in South Korea has resulted in the death of a man who was crushed by a robot, which failed to distinguish him from the boxes of food it was handling.

The unfortunate event took place as the man, a robotics company employee in his 40s, was inspecting the robot’s operations.

The robotic arm, mistakenly identifying the man as a box of vegetables, seized him and forcefully pushed his body against a conveyor belt, causing severe injuries to his face and chest, as reported by South Korean news agency Yonhap.

Despite being rushed to the hospital, the man succumbed to his injuries.

According to Yonhap, the robot’s primary function was to lift boxes of peppers and transfer them onto pallets.

The victim had been conducting checks on the robot’s sensors as part of preparations for its upcoming test run at the pepper sorting plant in South Gyeongsang province, scheduled for November 8. Originally planned for November 6, the test was postponed by two days due to sensor issues with the robot.

The man, an employee of the company that manufactured the robotic arm, was working late into the night on Wednesday when the tragic malfunction occurred.

Following the incident, an official from the Donggoseong Export Agricultural Complex, which owns the plant, called for the establishment of a “precise and safe” system.

This accident is a grim reminder of the potential dangers associated with automated machinery. In a similar incident in March, another South Korean man in his 50s suffered severe injuries when he was trapped by a robot while working at an automobile parts manufacturing plant.

G7 unites on Israel-Hamas war, calls for humanitarian aid in Tokyo summit

0

TOKYO. G7 diplomats have reached a unified stance on the Israel-Hamas conflict following intense meetings in Tokyo. The Group of Seven nations condemned Hamas, expressed support for Israel’s right to self-defense, and called for “humanitarian pauses” to expedite aid delivery to civilians in Gaza.

In a joint statement after two days of discussions, G7 foreign ministers, including U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, affirmed the need for unimpeded humanitarian assistance, emphasizing the importance of providing food, water, medical care, fuel, and shelter to those in need. They also advocated for humanitarian pauses and corridors to facilitate aid delivery and the release of hostages.

The G7 meeting aimed to address the escalating humanitarian crisis while avoiding deepening differences over Gaza. Blinken stressed the importance of G7 unity in these challenging times.

In addition to the humanitarian aspect, the G7 ministers are working to prevent further escalation of the conflict, using sanctions to restrict Hamas’s ability to raise funds for violent acts. They also condemned extremist settler violence against Palestinians, noting its detrimental impact on the West Bank’s security and prospects for lasting peace.

As the G7 met in Tokyo, thousands of Palestinians in Gaza were forced to flee southward due to food and water shortages, while Israel’s military engaged in intense combat with Hamas militants within Gaza City. The situation in and around the city remains dire.

Blinken shared key elements for post-war considerations, including preventing the forcible displacement of Palestinians from Gaza, using Gaza as a platform for terrorism, or reoccupying the territory. He also emphasized the need to ensure that terrorist threats do not emanate from the West Bank.

The G7 ministers addressed various global crises, including the conflict in Ukraine, North Korea’s missile programs, and China’s territorial disputes. They also discussed cooperation on pandemics, synthetic opioids, and the misuse of artificial intelligence.

The G7 remains steadfast in supporting Ukraine’s independence and territorial integrity. The ministers strongly condemned North Korea’s ballistic missile launches and arms transfers to Russia, in violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions.

Efforts to expand humanitarian aid to Gaza and establish “pauses” in Israel’s military operations continue, although challenges persist. Arab and Muslim nations demand an immediate ceasefire, while discussions on Gaza’s future have been delayed to prioritize addressing the immediate humanitarian crisis.

Despite some differences within the G7 on the Gaza issue, the group remains committed to finding a resolution to the conflict. Recent pro-Palestinian and anti-Israel demonstrations have occurred in G7 capitals and worldwide.

Blinken’s visit to Tokyo followed a Middle East tour, which included stops in Israel, Jordan, the West Bank, Cyprus, and Iraq. His next destinations are South Korea and India.

Mesmerizing galaxies revealed in stunning images from European space telescope

0

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. Scientists unveiled a captivating collection of galaxy images taken by the European space telescope Euclid on Tuesday, offering a shimmering spectacle of countless galaxies.

The European Space Agency shared these images four months after Euclid’s launch from Cape Canaveral. While similar celestial vistas have been observed by telescopes like Hubble, Euclid’s snapshots present “razor-sharp astronomical images across such an extensive swath of the sky, delving deep into the distant universe,” noted the space agency.

One of Euclid’s remarkable images showcases a group of 1,000 galaxies in a cluster located 240 million light-years away, set against a backdrop of over 100,000 galaxies situated billions of light-years distant. To put it in perspective, one light-year equals 5.8 trillion miles.

“These images are simply dazzling,” exclaimed Carole Mundell, the space agency’s science director, as she displayed the photograph of the galaxy cluster on a large screen at the control center in Germany.

Euclid’s advanced instruments are exceptionally sensitive, capable of capturing the faintest galaxies that were previously invisible. The results present “crystal-clear and striking images that transport us back in time through the cosmos,” stated Mundell.

The telescope also provided detailed images of a nearby spiral galaxy that closely resembles our own Milky Way. While the Hubble Space Telescope had previously examined the core of this galaxy, Euclid’s image reveals star formation across the entire region, according to scientists.

Euclid also turned its lens towards the Horsehead Nebula in the Orion constellation, which is renowned as a stellar nursery of young stars, a subject made famous by Hubble.

Astronomers aim to gain insights into the universe’s composition, with 95% consisting of dark energy and matter, by analyzing the shape and movement of galaxies located as far as 10 billion light-years away.

Over the next six years, the observatory will conduct a comprehensive survey of billions of galaxies, constructing the most intricate 3D map of the cosmos. NASA is a collaborative partner in this $1.5 billion mission and contributed the telescope’s infrared detectors.

Euclid, launched in July, orbits the Sun at a distance of approximately 1 million miles (1.6 million kilometers) from Earth. The telescope is named after the ancient Greek mathematician.

DOTr: Tuloy na ang PUV Modernization Program sa Disyembre 31

0

MAYNILA.

“We suspected that the two cadavers could be a woman and a man because of the structure of their bodies, however, we are still awaiting the results of the examination by forensic unit,” ayon kay Credo.

“We are now coordinating to another stations and barangay officials to inform about the discovery of two decomposing bodies,” dagdag pa ng opisyal.

Israel considers ‘little pauses’ in Gaza, rejects widespread cease-fire after U.S. pressure

0

WASHINGTON. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, after facing over a week of pressure from the United States for “humanitarian pauses” in Gaza, has hinted at the possibility of implementing only “little pauses” in the military campaign against the militant group Hamas. This comes as President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken made concerted efforts to rally support for limited relief for civilians caught in the ongoing conflict.

While the U.S. focuses on preventing a larger regional conflict and advocating for temporary humanitarian breaks in the fighting, it remains firmly in support of Israel’s goal to end Hamas control over Gaza. However, no comprehensive cease-fire seems imminent, with Netanyahu stipulating the release of hostages as a condition for any broader truce. The death toll in Gaza, as reported by the Hamas-run health ministry, has risen to 10,000, intensifying international scrutiny on the situation.

President Biden’s recent conversation with Netanyahu, following an eight-day gap, reiterated the need for short-term pauses in the conflict to allow civilians to evacuate and humanitarian aid to reach those in need. The National Security Council emphasizes that the conversation is the beginning of ongoing discussions.

Subsequently, Netanyahu, in an interview with ABC News, ruled out a general cease-fire but showed willingness to consider “little pauses.” The scope of these pauses and their agreement with the U.S. remain unclear. Netanyahu stressed that any comprehensive cease-fire in Gaza would require the release of hostages held by Hamas.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken embarked on a whirlwind diplomatic tour, visiting Israel, Jordan, the occupied West Bank, Cyprus, Iraq, and Turkey to garner support for the U.S.’s proposed humanitarian initiatives. CIA Director William Burns also engaged with intelligence partners and regional leaders to reinforce intelligence cooperation and discuss counterterrorism efforts.

The situation on the ground remains tense, with Israeli forces encircling Gaza City and cutting off the northern part of the territory. Troops are poised to enter the city, where they are expected to face militants using a network of tunnels in street-to-street combat. Casualties are anticipated to rise on both sides.

Despite the mounting civilian toll, the U.S. remains committed to supporting Israel. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby emphasized that Hamas initiated the conflict with an incursion into Israel on October 7, resulting in significant civilian casualties.

The U.S. is actively engaging with Israel to reduce civilian casualties and enhance the delivery of humanitarian aid. Secretary Blinken believes that implementing pauses in the war would facilitate humanitarian assistance to Gaza and the release of over 200 hostages held by Hamas while averting the escalation of the conflict across the region.

In parallel, there have been protests and demonstrations in various parts of the world against Israel’s tactics and U.S. support. Several countries have recalled their ambassadors to Israel, and international opinion appears to be shifting away from sympathy towards Israel.

Secretary Blinken is now set to visit Asian countries such as Japan, South Korea, and India, where the Gaza conflict will likely be a prominent topic alongside other international crises.
