Humanoid robots are here, yet awkward – are they really necessary?

The dream of creating human-like and practical robots has been an enduring quest inspired by science fiction. However, while the latest artificial intelligence advancements have driven investments in humanoid robotics, most current prototypes are seen as clumsy and impractical for real-life use.

Startups like Agility Robotics, with their warehouse robot “Digit,” focus on making robots that operate effectively in human spaces rather than trying to replicate human appearance. Amazon plans to test Digits for use in its warehouses, highlighting their potential to complement existing robotic systems.

On the other hand, companies like Figure AI are taking a more purist approach, aiming to create true humanoids capable of navigating workplaces, homes, and societies designed for humans. Their vision includes creating commercial robots to perform various tasks, particularly as labor shortages become more evident worldwide.

While these endeavors show promise, many prototypes are not yet market-ready. Elon Musk’s Tesla is also in the race to build a humanoid robot, but early demonstrations received mixed reviews. Some companies focus on improving dexterity in robot fingers before tackling the challenge of walking.

Agility’s Digit has Amazon’s attention, offering mobility that complements the company’s existing robotic systems. The concept of mobility is more significant than achieving human-like form for Amazon.

In the long run, these humanoid robots aim to provide valuable labor and interact with people in various roles across the economy. The future may see robots becoming a part of daily life, contributing to the workforce and enhancing human capabilities.

While the pursuit of humanoids may seem ambitious, the journey offers valuable insights into robotics, human-robot interaction, and artificial intelligence. These lessons may lead to the development of more practical and useful non-humanoid robots, which can address specific challenges effectively.

In summary, the quest for human-like robots continues, with various startups and tech giants exploring different approaches. The path may not always lead to full humanoid robots, but it promises progress in robotics and artificial intelligence, potentially benefiting various industries and aspects of human life.

Kasama sa naturang pagpupulong ang Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines na si Kazuhiko Koshikawa mula sa Embassy of Japan in the Philippines, Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Jaime Bautista, at PCG Commandant CG Admiral Ronnie Gil L. Gavan.

Israeli forces isolate northern Gaza, Palestinian death toll tops 10,000 in 4 weeks of conflict

0

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip. In the ongoing conflict, Israeli forces have severed the northern part of Gaza from the rest of the besieged territory and launched intense overnight airstrikes, setting the stage for an anticipated push into densely populated Gaza City. The Palestinian death toll has now exceeded 10,000, as reported by the Health Ministry in Hamas-controlled Gaza. This includes both fighters and civilians. On the Israeli side, approximately 1,400 people have lost their lives, primarily civilians, due to an incursion by a militant group on October 7 that triggered the war.

These figures mark a somber milestone, making this the deadliest round of Israeli-Palestinian violence in the 75-year history of Israel. With no immediate resolution in sight, Israel remains committed to removing the militant group from power and neutralizing its military capabilities.

As the conflict transitions to urban combat, casualties are expected to rise further. Troops are poised to enter Gaza City, and Palestinian militants, who have had years to prepare, are likely to engage in street-by-street battles and launch ambushes from an extensive network of tunnels.

Lieutenant Colonel Richard Hecht, an Israeli military spokesman, mentioned, “We’re closing in on them. We’ve completed our encirclement, separating the militant group’s strongholds in the north from the south.”

The Israeli military reported striking 450 targets overnight and taking control of a militant group’s compound. A one-way corridor for residents to evacuate to the south remains accessible for the hundreds of thousands of Palestinians remaining in Gaza City and other parts of the north.

Since the war’s outbreak, around 1.5 million Palestinians, approximately 70% of Gaza’s population, have been displaced. The region is grappling with shortages of essential supplies, and U.N.-run shelters are overwhelmed.

Mobile phone and internet services experienced an overnight outage, making it even more challenging for civilians to seek safety or request assistance.

Efforts for a ceasefire and humanitarian aid have faced resistance from Israel. Diplomacy efforts continue in the region, but no concrete achievements have been reported.

The conflict has also exacerbated tensions, leading to clashes between Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah militant group along their border. In another sign of growing unrest, a Palestinian man stabbed and wounded two members of Israel’s paramilitary Border Police in East Jerusalem before being shot dead.

In northern Gaza, a Jordanian military cargo plane air-dropped medical aid to a field hospital, raising the possibility of an additional avenue for aid delivery besides Egypt’s Rafah crossing. While aid has been allowed through the Rafah crossing, it has been deemed insufficient to meet the mounting needs of Gaza’s population.

Northern Gaza is grappling with a severe water shortage due to a lack of fuel to operate municipal wells and the cutoff of the region’s main water supply. Water facilities have been damaged, increasing the risk of sewage flooding.

Approximately 800,000 people have followed Israeli military orders to relocate to southern Gaza. But Israeli bombardments persist across the territory, resulting in casualties, even in supposed safe zones.

In a mass funeral, Palestinians mourned the loss of 66 people in the central town of Deir al-Balah. The Health Ministry reports that the death toll in Gaza now stands at 10,022 people, including over 4,100 children and 2,600 women.

Meanwhile, in south Lebanon, an Israeli airstrike led to the deaths of four civilians, including three children. Hezbollah retaliated by firing rockets into Israel. The Israeli military is reviewing the situation.

Over the course of the ground offensive, the Israeli military reported the loss of 30 troops. Palestinian militants continue to launch rockets into Israel, leading to evacuations in border areas.

Musk unveils AI chatbot ‘Grok’ with a hint of humor

Elon Musk has introduced an AI chatbot named Grok on his social media platform X, previously known as Twitter. However, as of now, it is accessible only to a limited group of users.

Describing it as “the best that currently exists” in some key aspects, Mr. Musk made the announcement on X before its official release. He proudly mentioned that Grok has an affinity for sarcasm and would respond to questions with a touch of humor.

Nevertheless, early indications suggest that Grok shares some of the common issues seen in other artificial intelligence tools. While some AI models refuse to answer certain questions, often refusing to provide criminal advice, Mr. Musk claimed that Grok would tackle “spicy questions” rejected by most other AI systems.

In a demonstration shared by Mr. Musk, Grok was asked for a step-by-step guide on making cocaine. Its response was, “just a moment while I pull up the recipe… because I’m totally going to help you with that.” However, it provided general and unworkable information, accompanied by sarcastic suggestions, before advising against pursuing the idea.

Grok displayed a gleeful tone when discussing the trial of crypto-entrepreneur Sam Bankman-Fried, but it inaccurately stated that the jury took eight hours to deliver a guilty verdict, when in reality, it took less than five.

Generative AI tools like Grok have faced criticism for making basic errors while sounding highly convincing in their writing style.

The team behind Grok xAI was established in July, drawing talent from other AI research firms. Although it is a separate entity, it maintains close ties with Mr. Musk’s other ventures, including X and the electric car company, Tesla.

Earlier this year, Mr. Musk expressed his desire for his version of AI to be a “maximum truth-seeking AI that tries to understand the nature of the universe.” Grok’s advantage lies in its access to up-to-date information from the X platform, setting it apart from the initial versions of some competitors, although increasingly up-to-date responses are available to paying customers with other AI tools.

While Grok is currently in a testing or “beta” phase, it will eventually become available to paying subscribers of X.

During the recent UK AI summit, Mr. Musk acknowledged the associated risks of AI development but has been a longstanding advocate of the technology. He co-founded OpenAI, which created ChatGPT, the first widely available AI tool last year. Microsoft invested in OpenAI, making the tool accessible on its platform.

Subsequently, Google introduced its competing artificial intelligence model, Bard, and Meta launched Llama. These tools aim to generate text responses using previously ingested information to make them sound as though a human wrote them.

The term “Grok” was coined by science fiction writer Robert A. Heinlein in his 1961 novel “Stranger in a Strange Land,” where it meant to deeply empathize with others. However, xAI mentioned that Grok was modeled after Douglas Adams’ “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,” which began as a BBC radio series in the 1980s and later expanded into print and film.

According to xAI, Grok is designed to answer nearly any question and even suggest what questions to ask, representing a “very early beta product – the best we could do with two months of training.”

0

PUERTO PRINCESA, Palawan.

“Attacks on journalists will not be tolerated in our democracy and those who threaten the freedom of the press will face the full consequences of their actions,” ayon sa statement ni Marcos.

Israel launches major strikes on Gaza as Netanyahu rejects ceasefire demands

0

In a continuation of the Israel-Hamas conflict, Israel launched significant airstrikes on Gaza as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu firmly rejected calls for a ceasefire. The ongoing crisis has attracted international attention and diplomatic efforts to end the violence.

Foreign ministers from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates met with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Amman, Jordan on Saturday. During the meeting, they urged Blinken to persuade Israel to agree to a ceasefire in the region.

Netanyahu’s position remains steadfast, as he insists on the return of over 240 hostages captured by the Palestinian group Hamas during its attacks on October 7. Speaking from the Ramon air force base in southern Israel, he stated, “There will be no ceasefire without the return of the hostages. This should be completely removed from the lexicon. We say this to our friends and to our enemies. We will simply continue until we defeat them. We have no alternative.”

Meanwhile, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called for an immediate ceasefire during his meeting with Blinken in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Blinken, on his second visit to the region in less than a month, is part of U.S. efforts to prevent the Israel-Hamas conflict from escalating. He has rejected the idea of a comprehensive ceasefire, citing concerns that it could allow Hamas to regroup. Instead, Blinken is working to persuade Israel to consider location-specific pauses that would facilitate the distribution of much-needed humanitarian aid in Gaza.

Gaza health officials reported that more than 9,770 Palestinians have been killed since the conflict began on October 7 when Hamas launched a surprise attack on southern Israel, resulting in the deaths of 1,400 people and the capture of over 240 hostages. The situation continues to evolve, with international diplomatic efforts at the forefront in seeking a resolution to the crisis.

NASA’s Lucy spacecraft discovers mini moon around asteroid Dinkinesh during close encounter

0

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. NASA’s Lucy spacecraft had an unexpected surprise during its visit to the asteroid Dinkinesh this week. It turns out that Dinkinesh has a tiny companion – a mini moon.

This discovery was made during Wednesday’s flyby of Dinkinesh, located 300 million miles (480 million kilometers) away in the main asteroid belt beyond Mars. When the spacecraft was about 270 miles away (435 kilometers), it captured an image of the asteroid-moon pair. Data and images transmitted back to Earth confirmed that Dinkinesh is only about half a mile wide (790 meters), while its accompanying moon is a mere one-tenth of a mile in size (220 meters).

NASA had sent Lucy past Dinkinesh as a practice run for its upcoming missions to study larger and more enigmatic asteroids located near Jupiter. Launched in 2021, Lucy is scheduled to reach the first of these Trojan asteroids in 2027 and conduct explorations for at least six years. The original list of seven target asteroids has now expanded to 11. The name “Dinkinesh” means “you are marvelous” in the Amharic language of Ethiopia. It also serves as the Amharic name for Lucy, the famous 3.2 million-year-old human ancestor’s remains found in Ethiopia in the 1970s, after which the spacecraft is named. Southwest Research Institute’s Hal Levison, the lead scientist, expressed, “Dinkinesh really lived up to its name; this is truly marvelous.”
